Seasonal Variation of Species Composition of Fishes Collected by Gill Net and Set Net in the Middle East Sea of Korea (동해 중부 연안에서 자망과 정치망에 어획된 어류 종조성의 계절변동)

  • The fish species composition and its seasonal variation of the middle East Sea of Korea were investigated from May 2004 to January 2005 using gill and set nets. A total of 59 species of fishes belonging to 31 families in 11 orders were identified in the gill and set nets; 33 species in 15 families and 6 orders were collected by the gill net, and 36 species in 26 families and 10 orders were collected by the set net. Among the fishes collected by gill net, the order Scorpaeniformes was dominant; the number of species as well as individuals was highest in summer; the biomass was highest in winter. However, in fishes collected by set net, the order Perciformes was dominant, the number of species was highest in autumn, the number of individuals was highest in spring, and the biomass was highest in winter. The fish composition of the middle East Sea differed considerably from that of the south East Sea, especially in the species composition of the order Scorpaeniformes and Pleuronectiformes. Principal component analyses for each net showed that the fish species composition depends on the kind of net used, even though the investigation was carried out in the same area and at the same time.

First Reliable Record of an Eleotrid Fish, Eleotris oxycephala (Perciformes: Eleotridae) from the Lower Reach of Jwagwang Stream Near Busan, Korea (경남 기장군 좌광천에서 채집된 구굴무치 Eleotris oxycephala의 기재)

  • Eleotris oxycephala was described in detail as the first reliable record from Korea based on a single specimen (62.1 mm SL) collected from the lower reach of Jwagwang stream near Busan, Korea. The specimen is easily distinguished from three congeners occurring in the northern West Pacific by having separation between two rows of sensory papillae on opercle and the fourth row of the papillae on cheek not extending beyond the 11th longitudinal sensory-papillae.

  • Four specimens (218.3~234.5 mm SL) of the family Stichaeidae were collected from the coastal water of Kangwon-do, in the middle East Sea of Korea. They are identified as Stichaeus nozawai Jordan and Snyder based on the following characters: posterior end of mouth not reaching posterior margin of eye, lateral line reaching posterior part of the caudal base; 10~13 dorsal spines behind end of lateral line, dorsal fin with oblique dark lines, I, 36~37 anal fin rays. We proposed a new Korean name, 'Keun-nun-jang-gaeng-i', for the species.

First Reliable Record of the Sickle pomfret, Taractichthys steindachneri (Bramidae: Perciformes) from Korea (우리나라 남해에서 출현한 새다래과(농어목) 한국미기록종, 흰꼬리타락치 Taractichthys steindachneri)

  • Taractichthys steindachneri is described based on two specimens (224.7~406.5 mm SL) collected from the south sea including the adjacent water of Jeju Island, representing a reliable first record from Korea. The species is characterized by having well-separated each pelvic fin, semicircular groove on dorsal surface of caudal peduncle, well-elongated dorsal and anal fin rays, nearly uniformly blackish body color with white margined caudal fin.

  • A single specimen (40.5 mm in SL) of Clariger chionomaculatus was collected at 4 m depth on mud bottom from off Geojedo Island, Korea. This species is characterized by having an elongated body without scales, several barbels below eyes, I, 12~15 second dorsal fin rays, I, 12~14 anal fin rays; 19~20 pectoral fin rays with one free soft ray on upper part, and a unique color pattern with numerous white blotches on dorsal part of body. Because it has been known from Japan only to date, we describe in detail C. chionomaculatus as the first record from Korea. A new Korean name, "Huin-jeom-wae-mang-dug", is proposed for the species.

  • A single specimen (59.3 mm in SL) of the family Gobiesocidae was collected from the northern coast of Jeju Island, Korea. It was identified as Lepadichthys frenatus by its having dorsal and anal fins with 17 and 13 rays, respectively, both fins connected to the caudal fin, and a reddish-brown body color. We describe the specimen as the first record from Korea, and propose a new Korean name "keun-ip-hak-chi" for the species.

  • Psenes maculatus and P. cyanophrys of family Nomeidae were collected for the first time off the coast of Tongyeong, Kyongsangnam-do, Korea. Specimens were catched with drifting seaweed patches on June and July, 1998. Young Psenes maculatus has six black bands ('<' shape) on the body, and 'Ttimul-reung-dom' is proposed as the Korean name. Psenes cyanophrys differs from P. pellucidus in having a compressed oval body shape scales on the check, and 16 longitudinal lines on the body. 'Jul-mu-nui-mul-reung-dom' is proposed as the Korean name.

New Record of the Chinamanfish, Symphorus nematophorus (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) from Korea (한국산 퉁돔과 어류 1미기록종, Symphorus nematophorus)

  • A single specimen of Symphorus nematophorus (481.0 mm in SL), belonging to the family Lutjanidae, was firstly collected by a set net in the coastal waters of Geojae Island, located in south sea of Korea on August 1, 2014. This specimen was characterized by having the anterior dorsal soft rays produced into filaments, a pit between eye and nostril, no tooth on vomer, and nine longitudinal blue strips on both sides of the body. We propose a new Korean name, "Sil-tung-dom-sok" and "Sil-tung-dom" for the genus and species, respectively.

  • The fluctuation in the abundance and species composition of fish was investigated using gape net in Dolsan District of Yeosu Korea from July 2015 to April 2016. A total of 1,331 fishes were sampled and classified into 30 orders, 42 families, and 53 species. The dominant orders are Perciformes including 21 famailies and 24 species, followed by Scorpaeniformes including 7 families and 13 species, and Clueiformes including 6 families and 6 species. Among the 53 fish species collected, Engraulis japonicus was the most frequent species occupying 43.5%, followed by Argyrosomus argentatus (23.8%), and Leiognathus nuchalis (22.4%). The monthly diversity, evenness, and richness index were 1.83-2.90, 0.76-0.95 and 3.06-6.40.

Study of Vertebral Column and Pterygiophores in Gobiidae (Pisces, Perciformes) from Korea (한국산 망둥어 과 어류의 척주와 담기골에 관한 연구)

  • Several osteological characters of 45 species belonging to 26 genera and 4 subfamilies in th family Gobiidae were surveyed based on 348 specimens collected from April, 1984 to September, 1992 in the southern part of Korea. The characters include the following: first dorsal-fin pterygiophore formula, vertebral number, epural number, and number of anal-fin pterygiophores anterior to the first haemal spine. The first dorsal-fin pterygiophore formula and epural number showed considerable stability at the generic level, and the apeared useful characters at the species level. Among them, the epural number used formerly to distinguish gobiid subfamilies was considered to be unimpotant taxonomic character in the classification of the subfamily Gobiinae.
