  • A survey was conducted by the staff of the College of Medicine and School of Public Health, Seoul National University in cooperation with Seoul Special City from 1 December 1967 through 28 February 1968, on such events as delivery, death, abortion and pregnancy. The survey directed to a total population of 47,811 residing in 9,157 households led us to the following findings: 1. Two year averages of crude birth rate, crude death rate and natural increase rate were 30.1, 5.6 and 24.5, respectively. 2. Of all deliveries, home and hospital deliveries constituted 61.1 per cent and 35.5 per cent, respectively. 3. Deliveries other than hospital deliveries were found to be attended more often by mother-in-laws (26.5 per cent) than by doctors or midwives(23.4 per cent). 4. About 51 per cent of all women having experiences in pregnancy during the last two years had an experience of consulting a doctor at least one time throughout whole period of pregnancy. 5. In most cases scissors were used to cut umbilical cords, of which 71.0 per cent were not sterilized and only 20.3 per cent sterilized. 6. In many cases placenta was incinerated(48.2 per cent) and on many other occasions it was thrown away into water(28.3 per cent). 7. Cement bags(37.4 per cent), gauze and absorbent cotton(29.8 per cent) were found to be most frequently used to receive new-born babies. 8. In 1966 8. 8 per cent of the women had at least one abortion induced and in 1967 the percentage was 9.2 per cent. 9. Nearly all(95.8 per cent) of the induced abortions reportedly were done at doctor's clinics. 10. Of all the abortions induced 65.3 per cent were done by specialists in obstetrics, 30.3 per cent by general practitioners and 2.7 per cent by midwives. 11. Those who experienced spontaneous abortions were 1.9 per cent of all women both in 1966 and 1967. 12. About 9.2 per cent of women investigated were found to be currently pregnant. 13. Age specific death rate turned out to be highest among those under 1 year of age. 14. Ten major causes of death in their order of frequency were: 15. Places of death can be classified into homes(75.3 per cent) and hospitals(13.2 per cent). 16. Method of disposing of corpses comprised burials(54.2 per cent) and cremations(44.6 per cent). 17. Infant, neonatal and hebdomadal mortality rates have been computed at 32.2, 18.9 and 13.7, respectively. 18. Infants were found to have died either at homes(81.5 per cent) or at hospitals(18.5 per cent). 19. Birth registrations had been done for about 18.5 per cent of the dead infants.

  • The purpose of this nutritional survey on the actual conditions of group feeding is to be of value for promoting the health of the blue collar workers through consice understanding of food intake trends in businesses as well as realizing our desirable target. The results of the survey are summarized as follow. 1, Status of food economics 1) The average feeding cost amounts to 453 won per day per person. 2) The average school years of food buyers were 12.3 years, cookers were 12.0 years and dieticians were 14.5 years. 3) Kerosene(57.6%), gas(24.2%), electric(12. 1%) and cool briguette(6.1%) were used for fuel. 2. Status of food intake The average food intake per person per day in surveyed businesses was 1193.4g. The total intake of food was consisted of 42% grains, 40.4% vegetables, 4.7% legumes, 4.5% fish and shellfish, 4.0% potatoes, 1.6% meats, 1.0% seasonings. 0.8% eggs, 0.5% sea weeds, 0.3% oil and fats, 0.1% sugar. These findings led us to the conclusion that workers in the surveyed businesses retied heavily on plant foods. 3. Status of nutrient intakes 1) The average intake of calorie was 2752.6 kcal per day, which was slightly higher than 2,700 kcal of RDA. Though the quantity was above the level of RDA, it was largely from plant foods. 2) The average intake of protein was 84.7g per day, which was slightly higher than 80g of RDA. 3) The average intake of fat was 26g per day, which was much lower than 36g of RDA. 4) The averse intake of calcium was 532.3mg per day, which was lower than 600mg of RDA. 5) The average iron intake was 9.8mg per day, which was much lower than 10mg of RDA and 18mg of HDA for women. 6) Intakes of vitamin group were high. Especially, intake of vitamin A was 2-3 times higher than RDA and intake of vitamin C and niacin were 2 times higher than RDA.

  • The molecular components that generate and maintain circadian rhythms of physiology and behavior in mammals are present both in the brain (suprachiasmatic nucleus; SCN) and in peripheral tissues. Examination of mice with targeted disruptions of either mPer1 or mPer2 has shown that these two genes have key roles in the SCN circadian clock. Here we show that loss of the clock gene mPer2 affects forced locomotor performance in mice without altering muscle contractility. A proteomic analysis revealed that the anterior tibialis muscles of the mPer2 knockout mice had higher levels of glycolytic enzymes such as triose phosphate isomerase and enolase than those of either the wild type or mPer1 knockout mice. In addition, the level of expression of HSP90 in the mPer2 mutant mice was also significantly higher than in wildtype mice. These results suggest that the reduced locomotor endurance of the mPer2 knockout mice reflects a greater dependence on anaerobic metabolism under stress conditions, and that the two canonical clock genes, mPer1 and mPer2, play distinct roles in the physiology of skeletal muscle.

  • Two experiments with 32 sheep were conducted to study the effects of feeding the same amount of diet per day at different meal frequencies on ration digestibility, energy utilization, rate of gain, body composition and efficiency of gain. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The ingestion by sheep of the same amount of feed per day in 8 meals, 1 meal plus 7 ruminal inflations-deflations, and in 1 meal caused no different effect in the digestibility of the nutrients and energy, or the ME value of the diet. (2) Heat production per unit of metabolic size per unit of dietary intake was markedly lower for sheep ingesting 8 meals or administered 1 meal plus 7 ruminal inflations-deflations per day than for sheep fed 1 meal per day. (3) Body weight gain was significantly greater by sheep fed 8 meals per day or 1 meal plus 7 ruminal inflations-deflations than by those fed 1 meal per day. However, the gain in DM and energy of wool was not affected by frequency o( meals. (4) Sheep ingesting 8 meals or administered 1 meal plus 7 ruminal inflations-deflations per day gained body protein, fat and energy at a more rapid and efficient rate than sheep fed 1 meal per day. (5) Sheep fed 8 meals per day gained greater proportion of fat, protein and ash in the gained portion of the bodies than did 1 meal fed sheep. (6) An attempt was made to establish the possible explanations by which the frequency of ingesting meals exerts its effects.

  • Sorghum is a crop with a various plant height depending on the planting density. If the height exceeds 1.8m, which is the harvestable height of the combine, loss is caused by clogging of the installation, entrance of the threshing section and the threshing section. The purpose of this study is to set the planting distance and number of plants per hill suitable for combine harvesting as the plant length does not exceed 1.8m. The experimental variety was Nampungchal. The experiment design was a split-plot design with three replications. The treatments were as follow: Main-plot were 1 and 2 plants as number of plants per hill and sub-plots were $60{\times}20cm$ (practice), $70{\times}15$, 20, 25, 30 cm as planting distance. The amount of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilization were 100, 70, $80kg\;ha^{-1}$. Data were collected: (1) grain yield: weight of grain in $kg\;ha^{-1}$, (2) 1000 grain weight: average weight of 1000 grain, (3) plant height: distance from soil to top of panicle, (4) ear length: distance from top of stem to top of ear in cm, (5) stem diameter: diameter of second internode, (6) tiller number per hill. Analyses of variance were performed using R version 3.3.1(https://www. r- project. org). The Duncan's multiple range test(DMR) was used to separate treatment means at P < 0.05. As number of plants per hill increased, plant height and yield increased and tiller number decreased. As planting distance increased, plant height and yield decreased and tiller number increased. At 1 plant per hill, the plant height did not exceed 1.8m at all planting distance. At 2 plants per hill, the plant height did not exceed 1.8m from the planting distance of $70{\times}25cm$. At 1 plant per hill, the tiller number increased to 0.23, 0.27, 0.60 and 0.70 as the planting distance increased to $70{\times}15$, 20, 25 and 30 cm, respectively. At 2 plants per hill, the tiller number increased to 0.03, 0.03, 0.14 and 0.40 as the planting distance increased to $70{\times}15$, 20, 25 and 30 cm, respectively. At 1 plant per hill, the yield decreased to 6030, 4280, 3400 and $3230kg\;ha^{-1}$ as the planting distance increased. At 2 plant per hill, the yield decreased to 7850, 5770, 5720 and $4960kg\;ha^{-1}$ as the planting distance increased. We recommend that the optimum number of plants per hill and planting distance is 2 and $70{\times}25cm$ suitable for combine harvesting.

  • The major purpose of this survey is to collect the related information on technical aspects for solving the problems which are facing producing farmers and regions, provide scientific facts to farmers related personals and institutions and aimed at contributing the development of sericultural sector in Korea. The results are as follows; (1) The area of mulberry field per a farmer which was selected as sample ranges from 3.0 to 370a with its average 45. 1a. And yet, the average of new cultivated areas is above than that of ordinary ones by 56.3 to 33.8a. The largest area is Honam hill area with 101. 1a and e smallest is Muzinzang with 20.8a. Shortly, a large number of farmer belongs to 11 to 50a with 66.5 per cent. (2) The ratio of clay and loam soils which are inadequte for growing of mulberry trees is 28.3 per cent and particulary high in new cultivated area with 36.2 per cent. And yet, base soil is occupied with 45 per cent of heavy clay and particularly even 54.2 per cent in new cultivated area. On the other hand, the number of areas which the contents of organic matters is relatively low, with 48.2 per cent is near the half, but the ratio of mulberry fields which seems to contain organic matters abundantly is only 7.2 per cent. (3) The varieties of mulberry trees are Ilgirae, Gaeryangseoban, Suwonsang No.4 and Nosang. The ,ratio of the varieties are 33.3%, 25.7%, 18.0% and 10.5%, respectively. Consequently the four varieties enumerated above occupies 93.5 per cent. (4) The mulberry fields are almost composed of exclusive mulberry fields and its ratio was 92.3 per cent. The number of planted trees per 10a arrange from 480 to 1,390 and its average is 846. But most of them nearly belong to 701 to 1,000 with 91.3per cent. (5) The second year's autumn after planting is generally adopted as the first harvesting season, and its ratio is 73.0 per cent, but autumn of the years and next spring are not few, and its ratio are 12.7 and 8.7 per cent. The first harvesting method is relatively normal with 88.8 per cent of ratio. From the viewpoint of harvesting method, picking leaves was applied with 97.7 per cent of ratio in young larvae rearing and picking shoot and picking shoot after harvest with branches were applied with 80.0 per cent of ratio in grown larvae rearing. The ratio of applying the harvesting method of picking leaves were 97.7 and 91.7 per cent in young larva and grown larva in autumn rearings. But there was also picking leaves absolutely with 7.1 per cent of ratio(Chunwon was 47 per cent) and yet, the farmers applying cutting before shooting in spring was no more than 17.8 percent.

  • In order to develop optimum paddy-upland rotation system, we evaluated the 1st and the 2nd upland growth and yield characteristics of foxtail millet, proso millet, sorghum rotated from paddy field and rice rotated from upland in paddy-upland rotation. Average number of ears per hill was 3.3 in the 2nd upland cultivation. The value was greater by 1 ear as compared to 1st upland cultivation (2.2 ears per hill). In average yield per 10a, the 2nd upland cultivation showed 220.3 kg, 23% increased yield compared to the 1st upland cultivation (179 kg per 10a). In average number of ears per hill, the 2nd upland cultivation showed 8.3 ears, increased 4 ears compared to the 1st upland cultivation (4.2 ears per hill). In average yield per 10a, the 2nd upland cultivation showed 152.8 kg, 16.8% increased yield compared to the 1st upland cultivation (130.8 kg per 10a). In average days from seeding to heading of 5 sorghum varieties, there were no significant difference between the 1st (68.6 days) and the 2nd (67.4 days) upland cultivation rotated from paddy field. In the average number of grains per ears, the 2nd upland cultivation showed 2,931.6 grains per ear, 12% increased compared to the 1st upland cultivation (2,619.6 grains per ears). Average yield per 10a of sorghum in the 2nd upland cultivation showed 242.3 kg, 4.6% increased compared to the 1st upland cultivation (231.7 kg per 10a). In growth and yield characteristics of rice in paddy-upland rotation, culm length in paddy-upland-paddy plot showed 82.9 cm, 7.3 cm longer compared to the continuous rice paddy field (75.6 cm). Ear length was also 1 cm longer than that of the continuous rice paddy field. In average number of ears per hill, paddy-upland-paddy plot showed 25.0 ears, 4.3 ears more than that of the continuous rice paddy field (20.7 ears per hill). In average yield of rice per 10a, the paddy-upland-paddy rotation plot showed 526.8 kg, 9.8% higher yield compared to the continuous rice paddy field (479.9 kg per 10a).
