  • Detailed modeling of PEMFCs has been getting considerable interest for predicting the fuel cell performance and also for use in various systems engineering activities. While CFD-based equipment models provide detailed analyses of the performance, they are very time-consuming to develop and run. The computations become quite complex when such models have to be embedded into the flowsheet-level optimization of fuel cell systems. In this paper, we present results about building and using NN-based reduced order models for quickly and repetitively predicting the flow of reactants in a PEMFC manifold.

  • The modelling of PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) has been studied in many kinds of methods. But there are some limitations in application of the developed models to analyze transient phenomena of power systems. The PSCAD/EMTDC is very popular simulation tool in power system areas. To analyze power systems interconnected to PEMFCs, the PSCAD/EMTDC model of the PEMFCs is needed. In this paper, we developed a PSCAD/EMTDC model of PEMFC based on electro-chemical characteristic equations of PEMFC. Also, we performed simulations using the developed model in the PSCAD/EMTDC program and tested appropriateness of the proposed models. The simulations showed good results.

  • This study investigates drying condition when a small fan is added to a operating the free-breathing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) with dry $H_2$ and Air. Polarization tests were conducted on PEMFCs at cell temperatures between 30 and $50^{\circ}C$ under dry operation. In the results, the cell performance strongly depended on the cell temperature and the cathode gas stoichiometric flow rates. The cell performance increases as cell temperature decreases from 50 to $30^{\circ}C$. In the domain where the stoichiometry of air is quite large, reduction of the concentration overpotential compensated the increased internal resistance due to drying. The maximum performance was obtained at the small air flow rate beyond which flooding occurs. This indicates that the fan should be operated in the stoichiometry domain with a well designed cell structure to avoid flooding.

  • In this study, we investigated operating characteristics of natural gas fuel processor for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The fuel processor consists of a natural gas reformer, a water-gas shift reactor, a heat-exchanger and a burner, in which the overall integrated volume is exactly(exceptionally) small, namely, about 10L except outer insulation. The producted hydrogen is $1Nm^3/hr$ and the maximum thermal efficiency is ${\sim}76%$(low heating value) at full operating load. A compact and highly efficient $1Nm^3/hr$ class natural gas fuel processor was developed at UNISON is an advantage for application in residential PEMFCs co-generation systems.

  • Fuel cell is spotlighted as next energy source of future. The fuel of vehicle will be changed from fossil fuel such as gasoline, diesel to hydrogen. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) will be used to fuel cell vehicle because of its suitability. PEMFCs need oxygen for cathode. Because PEMFCs in vehicle use air for oxygen, air pollutant will be effect to performance of PEMFC. In this study, we examine a type of filter and pollutant gas how can be effect to performance of fuel cell electric vehicle.

  • The structure of pore network of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) in PEMFCs plays a critical role in determining the transport phenomena of reaction gas as well as generated water. In addition, the interactive characteristics between water and surface of pore are no less important than the structural characteristics of pore network. In this study, porometric investigation is conducted for two kinds of GDL using method of standard porosimetry which enable to distinguish hydrophobic pores from hydrophilic pores of GDLs. The porosity of TGPH-120 decreases by 6% by adding 30 wt.% of PTFE, but the porosity of hydrophilic pores decreases by 12%. The relation of $p_c-S_{nw}$ varies with the addition of PTFE, especially at low $p_c$.

  • Process conditions for MEA fabrications have significant effects on properties and performance of the MEAs for PEMFCs. In this study, effects of additives on the surface properties of the MEA was investigated to improve homogeneity of the coated catalyst layer. Another parameter that affects on characteristics of the MEAs is hot-pressing condition. Hot pressing condition was optimized by using DOE (design of experiment) method.
