High Frequency and High Luminance AC-PDP Sustaining Driver

  • Plasma display panels (PDPs) have a serious thermal problem, because the luminance efficiency of a conventional PDP is about 1.5 1m/W and it is less than $3\~5\;lm/W$ of a cathode ray tube (CRT). Thus there is a need for improving the luminance efficiency of the PDP. There are several approaches to improve the luminance efficiency of the PDP and we adopted a driving PDP at high frequency range from 400kHz up to over 700kHz. Since a PDP is regarded as an equivalent inherent capacitance, many types of sustaining drivers have been proposed and widely used to recover the energy stored in the PDP. However, these circuits have some drawbacks for driving PDPs at high frequency ranges. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the parasitic components on the PDP itself and on the driver when the reactive energy of the panel is recovered. Various drivers are classified and evaluated based on their suitability for high frequency drivers. Finally, a current-fed driver with a DC input voltage bias is proposed. This driver overcomes the effect of parasitic components in the panel and driver. It fully achieves a ZVS of all full-bridge switches and reduces the transition time of the panel polarity. It is tested to validate the high frequency sustaining driver and the experimental results are presented.

The Optimum Phosphor Thickness to Obtain the Highest Luminance and Luminous Efficiency in ac PDP

  • Plasma display panel(PDP) have gained great attention due to their potential application to large-area display including HDTV. The luminance and luminous efficiency of PDP, however, should be improved to realize this goal. In this study, we examined experimentally the effects of phosphor thickness and discharge gap on the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac PDP. For the rib height of 110 ${\mu}m$, whereas the optimum phosphor thickness was about 30 ${\mu}m$. The optimum thickness of green phosphor was about 50 ${\mu}m$ for the rib height of $120{\sim}160\;{\mu}m$.

  • The electro-optical characteristics of several functional layers over the MgO protective layer were studied during the continuous discharge of an AC-PDP. In order to observe the degradation of each functional layer on the MgO protection layer, we measured the surface morphology, cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum, the secondary electron emission coefficient (${\gamma}$) and the discharge characteristics after 500 hours of discharge during the operation of the AC-PDP.

  • In this paper, we present a 2-Dimensional simulation model of the discharge in an ac plasma display panel cell. Therefore, we study a ramp reset waveform in an ac plasma display panel discharge cell using 2-Dimensional simulation. Finally We research a connection between priming particles' density and stability.

  • In Color AC Plasma Display Panel(PDP). Low luminous efficiency is a major problem. We measured luminous efficiency of PDP as a function of the Ar mixing ratio. Our results show that efficiency has improved by $5{\sim}10%$ at the condition of 0.5% Ar mixing ratio, compared with Ne-Xe(4%) or He-Ne-Xe(4%) (He:Ne = 7:3) gas.

  • This paper proposes a non-contact color inspection system for plasma display panel (PDP). The red, green, and blue test pattern images are acquired by using the area color CCD camera at the various distance from the PDP. The RGB values are obtained from the region of interest (ROI) which are extracted by applying the image processing to the test pattern image. Finally, the CIE xy and u'v' chromaticity coordinates of the test pattern images according to the distance are acquired from the RGB color coordinates.

  • The plasma display panel with the electrode structure of new discharge AND gate and its driving scheme were proposed and the driving system for experiment was developed. And operation of these discharge AND gate was verified by the experiment of PDP addressing with floating electrode. This discharge AND gate operated by the operation speed of 8$mutextrm{s}$ and the operation margin of 100V. The address operation margin of 10V also obtained. It was known to be able to control the discharge of the adjoining scan electrode accurately. Because proposed method uses the DC discharge the control of the discharge can be facilitated compared with conventional discharge AND gate. Moreover, because the input discharge and the output discharge of discharge gate are separate, the display discharge can be prevented from passing discharge gates. Therefore, it is possible to apply to the large screen plasma display panel. And the decrease of contrast ratio does not occur because the scanning discharge does not influence the picture quality.

An Address Voltage Stabilization Circuit for the Single-Side Driving Method of AC Plasma Display Panels

  • An address voltage stabilization circuit for the single-side driving (SSD) method for AC plasma display panels (PDP) is proposed. The single-side driving method, which eliminates a common sustaining driver, uses only two electrodes in a three electrode AC PDP structure. The high-impedance (Hi-Z) mode operation of the data drive ICs during the sustaining period is needed for surface gas-discharge without misfiring in the SSD method but it produces the problem that the address voltage increases up to the breakdown voltage. The proposed circuit based on a flyback converter can stabilize the address voltage under the breakdown voltage and provide better surface gas-discharge performance without any misfiring in the SSD scheme.

Design of a new barrier rib with low dielectric constant and thermal stability

  • Lowering the dielectric constant is one of the important issues for the efficiency and the power consumption in the plasma display panel (PDP) industry. This study examined the effect of the addition of ceramic filler (up to 10% of crystalline and amorphous silica, respectively) to a $B_2O_3$-ZnO- $P_2O_5$ glass matrix on the dielectric, coefficient of thermal expansion, etching behaviors and residual stress for the barrier ribs in plasma display panels. The dielectric constant of barrier ribs is affected by containing two types of $SiO_2$ filler for the barrier rib composition in PDP.

  • 최근 많은 나라들이 상용전원의 왜곡을 방지하기 위해 AC 라인에 직접 연결하는 제품에 IEC 61000-3-2 나 IEEE 59 와 같은 고조파 규제를 가하고 있다. 따라서 최근 차세대 디스플레이 소자로 각광을 받고 있는 PDP(플라즈마 디스플레이 패널) 역시 이런 규제치를 만족하기 위해 역률개선회로를 부착하고 있다. 기존의 PDP 파워 모듈에서는 일반적으로 잘 알려진 부스트 컨버터를 이용해 역률개선회로를 구성하여 사용하였다. 그러나 PDP 자체의 열과 브리지 다이오드의 과도한 발열 때문에 시스템의 안전성을 보장할 수가 없었다. 본 논문에서는 PDP 파워 모듈용 역률개선회로로 브리지 없는 부스트 컨버터를 이용함으로써 효율, 소자 수, 발열상태 등 여러 가지 측면에서 기존회로와 비교 분석을 하고 그것의 제품 적용 가능성을 살펴보고자 한다.
