  • In this study, to understand the factors influencing the flow change the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), the correlation between the volume transport the TWC, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) was analyzed. A calculation of the monthly volume transport of TWC for 25 years (1993-2018) revealed that the seasonal fluctuation cycle was the largest in summer and smallest in winter. Power spectrum analysis to determine the periodicity of the TWC volume transport, Oceanic Niño Undex (ONI), and PDO indicated that the TWC volume transport peaked at a one year cycle, but ONI and PDO showed no clear cycle. Further, to understand the correlation between the TWC transport volume and ONI and PDO, the coherence estimation method was used for analysis. The coherence of ONI and PDO had a high mutual contribution in long-period fluctuations of three years or more but had low mutual contribution in short-period fluctuations within one year. However, the coherence value between the two factors of the TWC volume transport and PDO was 0.7 in the 0.8-1.2 year cycle, which had a high mutual contribution. Meanwhile, the TWC volume transport and PDO have an inverse correlation between period I (1993-2002) and period III (2010-2018). When the TWC maximum transport volume (2.2 Sv or more) was high, the PDO index showed a negative value below -1.0, and the PDO index showed a positive value when the TWC maximum transport volume was (below 2.2 Sv). Therefore, using long-term PDO index data, changes in the TWC transport volume and water temperature in the East Sea coastal area could be predicted.

  • As the average life expectancy of human beings is extended in addition to the entry of the aging society, there is a tendency for the interest in the appearance of men and women in modern society to increase. The most external judgment of human aging is the wrinkles on the facial skin. People are undergoing various procedures to have clean, wrinkled, and resilient healthy skin. Many thread lifting procedures are being implemented because they tend to want simple and effective procedures during the procedure. In this study, in order to improve lifting effect in thread lifting, animal experiments were conducted to confirm the improvement of wrinkles by injecting RF high frequency and CO2 gas into existing PDO suture procedures. The experimental groups consisted of natural aging groups, PDO treatment groups, groups with RF high frequency in PDO procedures, groups with CO2 gas injected into PDO procedures, and groups with CO2 gas and RF injected simultaneously into PDO procedures. The individuals in the natural aging group had an average wrinkle depth of 0.408mm before the procedure, and the average wrinkle depth of the 10th week was 0.68mm. The depth of wrinkles in the PDO treatment group averaged 0.384mm before the procedure, and 0.348mm on the 10th week after the procedure. The average crease depth of pre-procedure objects injected with RF high frequency in PDO was 0.42mm, and the average crease depth for 10 weeks was 0.378mm. The average crease depth of the CO2 gas injected into the PDO was 0.4mm before the procedure, and the average crease depth was reduced to 0.332mm in the 10th week after the procedure. On average, the number of objects injected with CO2 gas and RF high frequency in the PDO procedure decreased to 0.412mm before and 0.338mm in the 10th week after the procedure. The procedure of injecting CO2 gas and RF into the PDO suture showed the highest reduction rate of 17.96%.

  • This review paper discussed the decadal fluctuations in the catch of the common squid, Todarodes pacificus (T. pacificus) by focusing on migration and distribution patterns. Since 1980s, changes in T. pacificus catches were due to climate regime shift in Korean waters. Fluctuation patterns of catches were different between the East Sea and the Yellow Sea. Generally PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) phase shows a negative correlation with strength of warm current to the East Sea. In 1980s when PDO was positive phase (+), T. pacificus catch was higher in the Yellow, but it was lower in the East Sea. In 1990s when PDO was negative phase (-), T. pacificus catch showed opposite trend compared with 1980s. Such spatial and decadal fluctuations of T. pacificus catch were due to its northward migration along with the warm current or southward movement against the current. In the East Sea, strong (weak) warm current period, the current path has been shifted toward the East Sea coast of Korea (central East Sea or the coast of Japan). It has a correlation with PDO. In the positive PDO phase (1980s), the fishing ground was located on the eastern side of Ulleungdo, whereas during negative PDO phase (1990s), they were situated near the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula. In the 1980s, volume transport passing into the Yellow Sea increased, whereas volume transport in the East Sea decreased. This is one of major reason increasing T. pacificus larvae in the Yellow Sea.

  • We studied an unrevealed characteristic of radiation emission from a localized plasma oscillator (plasma dipole oscillation-PDO). PDO is a novel concept of generating terahertz emission from a laser plasma-based system. The electromagnetic field generated by a PDO embedded in a uniform plasma, instead of being cut off by the ambient plasma as expected by a common but misleading sense, propagates long distances to escape the plasma eventually. The PDO-THz, differently from other laser plasma-based THz sources, utilizes the collective behavior of the plasma (plasma oscillations) and, accordingly, produces a quasi-narrow-band emission, which can potentially be useful in THz-based accelerator or THz-pump and probe experiments. We verified the PDO mechanism by using realistic three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

  • CANopen which is one of the in-vehicle network (IVN) protocols is adopted to solve the hardware dependency problem of the CAN-based application. CANopen makes different CAN devices interoperable each others. By the advantage of the device profiling concept, it can make the period of developing CAN-based application system shorten. The utilization of CANopen network must be reduced to improve the communication performance (e.g. worst-case response time). For reducing network utilization, messages need to be packed as many as possible so that message frame overhead can be decreased. In this paper, we suggested a PDO packing mechanism using object dictionary (OD) and process data object (PDO) communication service in CANopen. Through experiments, the performance of the mechanism is evaluated with SAE benchmark. As a result, network utilization is decreased about 10% compared to the result of the previous works.

  • Although tropical cyclones with wind speeds weaker than 17 ms-1 (weak tropical cyclones: WTCs) can cause significant damage, particularly over the Seoul metropolitan area, only a few studies have focused on WTC activity over South Korea. In this study, we found that WTC activity is likely associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). During the negative phases of the PDO, landfall frequency of WTCs increased significantly compared to the positive phases at 95% confidence level. When related to the negative phases of the PDO, a positive relative vorticity anomaly is found in the northern sector of the western North Pacific while a negative relative vorticity anomaly and enhanced vertical wind shear prevail in the southern sector of the WNP. These factors are favorable for the northward shift of the genesis location of tropical cyclones on average, thereby reducing the total lifetime of WTCs. Moreover, a high-pressure anomaly over the Japanese islands would shift a tropical cyclone track westward in addition to the landfall location. Consequently, the effects of the topographical friction and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water on a tropical cyclone may increase. These conditions could result in a weaker lifetime maximum intensity and landfall intensity, ultimately resulting in WTCs becoming more frequent over South Korea during the negative phases of the PDO.

  • In this study, a polydioxanone (PDO) and poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) sheath-core biphasic monofilament was designed to develop an esophageal stent with improved mechanical properties and controlled biodegradability. The radial force of PDO/PLLA sheath-core stent was 10.24 N, while that of PDO stent was 5.64 N. Deteriorations of tensile strength, elastic modulus and elongation during degradation test were also delayed on PDO/PLLA group. Hyaluronic acid-dopamine conjugate and $BaSO_4/PDO$ conjugate coating layers provided improved tissue adhesion strength and reasonable X-ray contrast, respectively. Taken all together, the sheath-core filaments with tissue adhesive and radiopaque properties will be useful in designing esophageal stents.

  • Characteristics of pressure-drop oscillations(PDO) in a boiling channel were studied numerically and compared with experimental data. Effects of initial and boundary conditions on PDO were investigated in terms of oscillation period and amplitude. The period and amplitude of PDO increased with increasing of the compressible volume in the surge tank and the heat input. PDO occurred within the specific range of the fluid temperature, at which oscillation period and amplitude diminished rapidly with the increase of the fluid temperature. The increase of the loss coefficient in fluid supply line resulted in slightly longer oscillation period and larger amplitude. Numerical results showed good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The characteristics of pressure-drop oscillations(PDO) in boiling channel are studied experimentally. The effects of initial and boundary conditions on PDO are investigated in terms of oscillation period and amplitude. The period and amplitude of PDO are increased with the increase in the compressible volume in surge tank and heat input. However the amplitude of PDO is decreased with fluid temperature under low subcooling condition. Higher initial insurge flowrate resulted in almost invariant oscillation period but lower amplitude. At higher heat input the oscillation of heater wall temperature is significant, whose period is the same as that of pressure-drop instability.
