  • The Pd/Pt gate MISFET type hydrogen sensors, for detecting dissolved hydrogen gas in the transformer oil, were fabricated and their characteristics were investigated. These sensors including diffused resister heater and temperature monitoring diode were fabricated on the same chip by a conventional silicon process technique. The differential pair plays a role in minimizing the intrinsic voltage drift of the MISFET. To avoid the drift of the sensors induced by the hydrogen, the gate insulators of both FETs were constructed with double layers of silicon dioxide and silicon nitride. In order to eliminate the blister formation on the surface of the hydrogen sensing gate metal, Pt and Pd double metal layers were deposited on the gate insulator. The hydrogen response of the Pd/Pt gate MISFET suggests that the proposed sensor can detect the dissolved hydrogen in transformer oil with 40mV/10ppm of sensitivity and 0.14mV/day of stability.

  • Monometallic, bimetallic and trimetallic particles consisting of different weight compositions of Pt-Pd-Rh over pure alumina wash coats have been synthesized and their catalytic performance on methane conversion was studied from 150 to $600^{\circ}C$. Different catalyst formulations with variable Pt, Pd and Rh contents for bimetallic and trimetallic systems were tried and $Pt_{(1.5)}Rh_{(0.3)}/Al_2O_3$ and $Pt_{(1.0)}Pd_{(1.0)}Rh_{(0.3)}/Al_2O_3$ shows low $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$ temperatures. Bimetallic and trimetallic particle synergism acts as three way catalysts and therefore, all the catalysts show 100% methane conversion. The effect of supports such as $ZrO_2$ and $TiO_2$ on methane combustion was investigated; from $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$ results both $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ are suitable supports for low temperature methane combustion.

  • In adrenaline-stimulated human platelets, panaxadiol (PD) and panaxatriol (PT) from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer did not inhibit the $Ca^{2+}$-innux, but inhibited the formation of thromboxane $A_2$ and the platelet aggregations. It seems that PD and PT block a pathyway interconvefing arachidonic acids (20:4) to thromboxane $A_2$ (TX $A_2$), because the amount of $Ca^{2+}$ which phospholipase C or phospholipase $A_2$ requires to liberate 20 : 4 from membrane phospholipids was increased by PD and PT. These results mean that PH and PT have an antiplatelet effect by Inhibiting the formation of TX $A_2$.

  • In this work, Pd/Pt gate MISFET sensor using Pd membrane was fabricated to detect the hydrogen in DI water. A differential pair-type was used to minimize the intrinsic voltage drift of the MISFET. To avoid hydrogen induced drift of the sensor, the silicon dioxide/silicon nitride double layer was used as the gate insulator of the FET's. In order to eliminate the blister formation on the surface of the hydrogen sensing gate metal, Pd/Pt double metal layer was deposited on the gate insulator. For this type of application sensors need to be isolated from the DI water, and a Pd membrane was used to separate the sensor from the DI water. The output voltage change due to the variation of hydrogen concentration is linear from 100ppm to 500 ppm.

  • The magneto-optical Kerr effect due to the (Fe,Co)/(Pd,Pt,Cu,Ag) multilayer film is calculated considering of multiple reflection effect, and the calculated Kerr spectrum is compared to the reported experimental value. In case of Co/Pd, the reliance of composition and the variable tendency of magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle for Co thickness fully coresponds to experimantal and theoretical value. The theoretical Kerr spectrum of Fe/Cu and Fe/Ag multilayer films show the peaks near the Cu and Ag optical ansorption band in accordance with the experiment. But in case of Co/Pt, the increase tendency of Kerr rofation with decreasing wavelength reported by experiments could not be explained by the optical multiple interference. This difference of theoretical and experimental Kerr spectrum of Co/Pt film might be related with the change of electronic structure of Co and/or Pt from their bulk state.

  • The palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes(where, $([M(L)_2X_2]$, M=Pd(II), Pt(II); L=isoxazole(isox), 3,5-dimethylisoxazole(3,5-diMeisox), 3-methyl, 5-phenylisoxazole(3-Me, 5-Ph-isox), and 4-amino-3,5-dimethylisoxazole (4-ADI); X=Cl, Br) with isoxazole and its derivatives were investigated on antitumor activity by MM2 and EHMO calculation. Because for all the complexes the ${\sigma}MO$ energy level $(E_{{\sigma}(M-X)})$ between $d_x^{2-}_y^2$ orbital of central metal and px orbital of halogen atom is less than ${\sigma}MO$ energy level $(E_{{\sigma}(M-N)})$ between $d_x^{2-}_y^2$ orbital of central metal and px orbital of N atom, without exception. And judging, from the lower $(E_{\'{o}(m-x)})$ value in trans, the bonding strength was found to be weaker in trans isomer than in cis. For the Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes which have planar ligands, it was shown that for all the complexes dissociation of X-atom in the Pd(II) complexes is easier than that of X-atom in the Pt(II) complexes in both cis- and trans-complexes. Therefore it suggests that the easier dissociation of $X^-$ ion has some relations with antitumor activity, and a linear equation with correlation coefficient of 0.96 was found between ${\Delta}E_{{\sigma}(N-X)}(E_{{\sigma}(M-N)}-E_{{\sigma}(M-X)})$ and inhibitory activity coefficient, logIA.

  • Basic studies for the effective extraction of dibenzylammonium dibenzyldithiocarbamate(DBADBDC) complexes of Ag(I), Pd(II), Au(III) and Pt(IV) into chloroform have been conducted. The effects of pH on the extraction of ligand itself and metal cemplexes showed that DBADBDC itself was uniformly extracted in the pH range of 2~9 and metal complexes were effectively extracted at the pH range as follows. That is, Ag(I) : in an acidic aqua medium, Pd(II) : > 4, Au(III) : wide range, and Pt(IV) : > 3. The distribution ratio and extractabilities were obtained from the partition and extraction equilibria of metal-DBDC complexes between aqueous solution and chloroform. Ag(I) : log D=4.226 : E(%)=99.9% in the aqueous solution of pH 0, Pd(II) : log D=1.804 : E(%)=98.5% at pH 4~7, Au(III) : log D=3.755 : E(%)=99.9% at pH 2~10, and Pt(IV) : log D=0.165 : E(%)=57.2% at pH 8.0. And also mole ratio of metal ion to ligand in complexes were determined by mole ratio method : 1 : 1 for Ag(I) and 1 : 2 for Pd(II), Au(III) and Pt(IV). $Cl^-$ was included as a coordination species in complexes of Au(III) and Pt(IV). Besides, extraction mechanisms of compleses sere examined in the presence of chloride ion in an aquous solution, and extraction reactions and estraction constants could be proposed and calculated, respectively.

  • Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (Panax ginseng) has been used for several thousand years to prolong longevity in Asian countries. Ginsenosides are the most active components isolated from ginseng and belong to damarane saponin which are separated into protopanaxadiol and protopanaxtriol. To evaluate the complex effect of ginsenoside in apo E null mice, ginseng extract were intraperioneally (i.p.) injected and provided high-cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. Ginseng extract came from were i.p. injected with dose of 100 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks in the last experimental duration. Ginseng extract used experiment was abundant Rb1, Rc, Re, and Rg1 and PD:PT ratio was 1.2. The high-cholesterol diet induced liver damage was significantly reduced by ginseng extract. Results from plasma lipid profiles and atherogenic index were improved by ginseng extracts. The GE group significantly decreased plasma TG and TC by 73% and 61% compared to apo E (-/-) group. Also ginseng extract tend to decrease lipid profiles and lipidperoxidation contents in liver and heart. Ginseng extract with an abundant amount of Rg1 significantly suppressed the apoptosis induction of cardiac tissue. In conclusion, ginseng extract (PD:PT = 1) was improved lipid profiles and anti-oxidant effects.

  • The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts were prepared from conventional chloride precursors by adsorption or precipitation-deposition methods. Their activities for hydrogenation reactions of cyclohexene and acetophenone were compared with those of commercial catalysts. The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts obtained from the adsorption procedure reveal higher hydrogenation activity than commercial catalysts and the catalysts prepared by the precipitation-deposition method. Their improved performances are attributed to the decreased metal crystallite sizes of Pt or Pd formed on the active carbon support upon the adsorption of the precursors probably due to the same negative charges of the chloride precursor and the carbon support. Under the preparation conditions studied, the reduction of the supported catalysts using borohydrides in liquid phase is superior to a gas phase reduction by using hydrogen in the viewpoint of particle size, hydrogenation activity and convenience.

  • Hydrogen-sensing behaviors of Pd- and Pt-SiC Schottky diodes, fabricated on the same SiC substrate, have been systematically compared and analyzed as a function of hydrogen concentration and temperature by I-V and$\DeltaI-t$ methods under steady-state and transient conditions. The effects of hydrogen adsorption on the device parameters such as the barrier height are investigated. The significant differences in their hydrogen sensing characteristics have been examined in terms of sensitivity limit, linearity of response, response rate, and response time. For the investigated temperature range, Pd-SiC Schottky diode shows better performance for H2 detection than Pt-SiC Schottky diode under the same testing conditions. The physical and chemical mechanisms responsible for hydrogen detection are discussed. Analysis of the steady-state reaction kinetics using I-V method confirmed that the atomistic hydrogen process is responsible for the barrier height change in the diodes.
