  • In this paper, we propose a high-speed adaptive PTS method which eliminates high PAR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) and we compare the proposed method with other conventional methods. In addition, we have designed a combined type SLM-PTS scheme to reduce PAR and evaluate the performance. The system used for evaluating PAR performance can be constructed as COFDM (Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) applying ETD(Enhabced Time Diversity)-Turbo coding scheme. All the analyses in this paper are focused on the system characteristics according to IFFT's point and modulation method and the performance evaluation are based on the PAR reduction rates. As a result, the SLM-PTS combination method reveals good PAR reduction rate and remarkable reduction in the amount of calculations. Especially, in the case of combine-3 scheme, we can achieve approximately $3.7\~3.9$ dB PAR reduction on a basis of 10-5 BER level. Moreover, we can eliminate the side information in COFDM system because of its adaptive characteristics in evaluating PAR reduction rate, so that the additional errors can be omitted.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between the treatment duration and cephalometric measurements and the PAR index in Class I malocclusion patients. In 100 Class I malocclusion patients, PAR score and cephalometric measurements were taken from study model and cephalometric radiographs and analyzed statistically. The results of this study were obtained as follows: 1. treatment duration was correlated with extraction and pre PAR index. 2. ANB, FMA, FMIA and IMPA exhibited positive correlation between pre PAR index and pretreatment cephalometric measurements. 3. $\underline{1}$ to FP exhibited positive correlation between post PAR index and posttreatment cephalometric measurements, and $\overline{1}$ to FP exhibited negative correlation. 4. $\underline{1}$ to SN, IIA and $\overline{1}$ to FP exhibited positive correlation between ${\%}\;PAR$ reduction and the change of cephalometric measurements and FMA FMIA, WITS and UL exhibited negative correlation. The results of this study indicate that PAR index taken from study model relate with items concerned with upper and lower incisors, and there are the tendency that pretreatment PAR index are larger in the patients with large Am value and hyperdivergent face.

  • The inappropriate and widespread use of quinolones in humans and animals may cause accelerated emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant determinants. In this study, we investigated quinolone resistance mechanisms in a total of 65 nalidixic acid-resistant E. coli isolated from swine rectal swabs (N=40) and clinical specimens (N=25). Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined by the disk diffusion method. PCR and DNA sequencing were performed for investigations of genes and mutations associated with quinolone resistance. In our study, 62 of 65 nalidixic acid-resistant E. coli harbored mutations in gyrA, parC, and/or parE genes; of the 65 isolates, 62 (95.4%) had mutations in the gyrA gene, 35 (53.8%) had mutations in the parC gene, 7 (10.8%) had mutations in the parE gene. The 35 isolates harbored mutations in two genes, gyrA and parC. Plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) determinants were investigated in the 65 isolates. Thirteen of 65 nalidixic acid-resistant E. coli contained the qnrS gene and 10 of those isolates had mutations in the gyrA, parC, and/or parE genes. We confirmed that an important mechanism of quinolone resistance in E. coli isolated from human and swine involves chromosomal mutations in the gyrA, parC, and/or parE genes with increasing use of quinolone for treatment or additives.

  • Polyarylate(PAR)-nylon 6 block copolymers of various block lengths were prepared by the anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam using the polymeric activator from hydroxy-difuncrtional PAR and toluene diisocyanate. Phase separated morphology of PAR-nylon 6 block copolymer was suggerted from the thermal properties measured by differential scanning calorometry(d.s.c.). Partial miscbility between PAR block and nylon 6 block of the block copolymers was more evident at shorter length of constituent blocks. In binary blends of PAR-nylon 6 block copolymer with PAR or nylon 6 homopolymer, molecular-level mixing of homopolymers with corresponding blocks of block copolymer was supposed from the thermal properties measured by d.s.c..

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effect on factors related lactation after administration of Palmul-tang in postpartum C57BL/6N mice. Materials and Methods: Experimental groups were divided into control group post-par group and pre-par group. Pre-par and post-par group were administered Palmul-tang(p.o) twice a week for 4 weeks or 3 weeks respectively. Control group was administered normal saline for 3 weeks. Then we observed morphological change, immunohistochemical density and milk protein gene expression of factors related lactation within mammary gland of postpartum mice. Results: In post-par and pre-par groups, adipose tissue within mammary gland significantly decreased, and ductal branch and alveoli prominently developed than that of control group at 1~3 weeks after administraion of Palmul-tang. In post-par and pre-par groups, density of immunoreactivity on oxytocin, prolactin, estrogen and progesterone receptors in mammary glandular tissue significantly increased than that of control group. mRNA expression of $\beta$-casein and placental lactogen (PL)-1 in post-par group was more increased than that of control and pre-par groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that Palmul-tang significantly improved factors related lactation at postpartum period.

  • Human Ly-6/uPAR molecules are a superfamily composed of two subfamilies; one is the membrane bound proteins with a GPI-anchor and the other are secreted proteins without the GPI-anchor. Ly-6/uPAR molecules have remarkable amino acid homology through a distinctive 8-10 cysteine-rich domain that is associated predominantly with O-linked glycans. These molecules are encoded by multiple tightly linked genes located on Chr. 8q23, and have a conserved genomic organization. Ly-6/uPAR molecules have an interesting expression pattern during hematopoiesis and on specific tumors indicating that Ly-6/uPAR molecules are associated with development of the immune system and carcinogenesis. Thus, Ly-6/uPAR molecules are useful antigens for diagnostic and therapeutic targets. This review summarizes our understanding of human Ly-6/uPAR molecules with regard to molecular structure as well as what is known about their function in normal and malignant tissues and suggest Ly-6/uPAR molecules as target antigens for cancer immunotherapy.

  • The full-length genes gyrB (2,415 bp), parC (2,277 bp), and parE (1,896 bp) in Edwardsiella tarda were cloned by PCR with degenerate primers based on the sequence of the respective quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR), followed by elongation of 5' and 3' ends using cassette ligation-mediated PCR (CLMP). Analysis of the cloned genes revealed open reading frames (ORFs) encoding proteins of 804 (GyrB), 758 (ParC), and 631 (ParE) amino acids with conserved gyrase/topoisomerase features and motifs important for enzymatic function. The ORFs were preceded by putative promoters, ribosome binding sites, and inverted repeats with the potential to form cruciform structures for binding of DNA-binding proteins. When comparing the deduced amino acid sequences of E. tarda GyrB, ParC, and ParE with those of the corresponding proteins in other bacteria, they were found to be most closely related to Escherichia coli GyrB (87.6% identity), Klebsiella pneumoniae ParC (78.8% identity), and Salmonella Typhimurium ParE (89.5% identity), respectively. The two topoisomerase genes, parC and parE, were found to be contiguous on the E. tarda chromosome. All 18 quinolone-resistant isolates obtained from Korea thus far did not contain subunit alternations apart from a substitution in GyrA (Ser83$\rightarrow$Arg). However, an alteration in the QRDR of ParC (Ser84$\rightarrow$Ile) following an amino acid substitution in GyrA (Asp87$\rightarrow$Gly) was detected in E. tarda mutants selected in vitro at $8{\mu}g/ml$ ciprofloxacin (CIP). A mutant with a GyrB (Ser464$\rightarrow$Leu) and GyrA (Asp87$\rightarrow$Gly) substitution did not show a significant increase in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CIP. None of the in vitro mutants exhibited mutations in parE. Thus, gyrA and parC should be considered to be the primary and secondary targets, respectively, of quinolones in E. tarda.

  • The protease-activated receptor (PAR)-2 is highly expressed in endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells. It plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure via the modulation of peripheral vascular tone. Although several mechanisms have been suggested to explain PAR-2-induced hypotension, the precise mechanism remains to be elucidated. To investigate this possibility, we investigated the effects of PAR-2 activation on N-type $Ca^{2+}$ currents ($I_{Ca-N}$) in isolated neurons of the celiac ganglion (CG), which is involved in the sympathetic regulation of mesenteric artery vascular tone. PAR-2 agonists irreversibly diminished voltage-gated $Ca^{2+}$ currents ($I_{Ca}$), measured using the patch-clamp method, in rat CG neurons, whereas thrombin had little effect on $I_{Ca}$. This PAR-2-induced inhibition was almost completely prevented by ${\omega}$-CgTx, a potent N-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel blocker, suggesting the involvement of N-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels in PAR-2-induced inhibition. In addition, PAR-2 agonists inhibited $I_{Ca-N}$ in a voltage-independent manner in rat CG neurons. Moreover, PAR-2 agonists reduced action potential (AP) firing frequency as measured using the current-clamp method in rat CG neurons. This inhibition of AP firing induced by PAR-2 agonists was almost completely prevented by ${\omega}$-CgTx, indicating that PAR-2 activation may regulate the membrane excitability of peripheral sympathetic neurons through modulation of N-type $Ca^{2+}$ channels. In conclusion, the present findings demonstrate that the activation of PAR-2 suppresses peripheral sympathetic outflow by modulating N-type $Ca^{2+}$ channel activity, which appears to be involved in PAR-2-induced hypotension, in peripheral sympathetic nerve terminals.

  • The polarographic behavior of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol(PAR) in acetonitrile solution was studied. In order to investigate the type of reduction current at every reduction step, dependence of limiting current on the height of mercury head, solution temperature, and concentration of PAR have been examined. The results were shown that the reduction current was controlled by diffusion. And the effect of proton donor such as water and phenol on DC polarograms of PAR and the reversibility of every reduction wave have been evaluated. Based on the experimental results, the polarographic reduction of PAR in acetonitrile solution occurred in two one-electron steps.
