  • This survey was performed to investigate and compare egg positive rates (EPRs) of Enterobius vermicularis among preschool children in 3 Korean localities (Chuncheon-si, Inje-gun, and Paju-si) in 2008. A total of 7,048 preschool children were examined. Overall, the total EPR was 4.0%; the EPR was the highest in Chuncheon-si (5.6%), followed by Inje-gun (4.5%) and Paju-si (3.4%). The EPR of boys (4.9%) was higher than that of girls (3.1%). The EPR significantly increased with age, with the highest observed in 5~7-year-olds. These findings demonstrate that E. vermicularis infection is widely prevalent among preschool children in Chuncheon-si, Inje-gun, and Paju-si, Republic of Korea.

  • Plasmodium vivax reemerged in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 1993, and is likely to continue to affect public health. The purpose of this study was to measure levels of anti-P. vivax antibodies using indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) in border areas of ROK, to determine the seroprevalence of malaria (2003-2005) and to plan effective control strategies. Blood samples of the inhabitants in Gimpo-si, Paju-si, and Yeoncheon-gun (Gyeonggi-do), and Cheorwon-gun (Gangwon-do) were collected and kept in Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC). Out of a total of 1,774 serum samples tested, the overall seropositivity was 0.94% (n=17). The seropositivity was the highest in Paju-si (1.9%, 7/372), followed by Gimpo-si (1.4%, 6/425), Yeoncheon-gun (0.67%, 3/451), and Cheorwon-gun (0.19%, 1/526). The annual parasite incidence (API) in these areas gradually decreased from 2003 to 2005 (1.69, 1.09, and 0.80 in 2003, 2004, and 2005, respectively). The highest API was found in Yeoncheon-gun, followed by Cheorwon-gun, Paju-si, and Gimpo-si. The API ranking in these areas did not change over the 3 years. The seropositivity of Gimpo-si showed a strong linear relationship with the API of 2005 (r=0.9983, P=0.036). Seropositivity data obtained using IFAT may be useful for understanding malaria prevalence of relevant years, predicting future transmission of malaria, and for establishing and evaluating malaria control programs in affected areas.

  • The relationship between anti-Plasmodium vivax circumsporozoite protein (CSP) antibody levels and the prevalence of malaria in epidemic areas of South Korea was evaluated. Blood samples were collected from inhabitants of Gimpo-si (city), Paju-si, and Yeoncheon-gun (county) in Gyeonggi-do (province), as well as Cheorwon-gun in Gangwon-do from November to December 2004. Microscopic examinations were used to identify malaria parasites. ELISA was used to quantitate anti-circumsporozoite protein (CSP) antibodies against P. vivax. A total of 1,774 blood samples were collected. The overall CSP-ELISA-positive rate was 7.7% (n=139). The annual parasite incidences (APIs) in these areas gradually decreased from 2004 to 2005 (1.09 and 0.80, respectively). The positive rate in Gimpo (10.4%, 44/425) was the highest identified by CSP-ELISA. The highest API was found in Yeoncheon, followed by Cheorwon, Paju, and Gimpo in both years. The positive rates of CSP-ELISA were closely related to the APIs in the study areas. These results suggest that seroepidemiological studies based on CSP may be helpful in estimating the malaria prevalence in certain areas. In addition, this assay can be used to establish and evaluate malaria control and eradication programs in affected areas.

  • The Korean government strengthened the environmental polices to manage and enhance Metropolitan Area air quality, and also has enforced "Special Act on Seoul Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement (SASMAQI)" issued in Dec. 2004. Recently government expanded the Seoul Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD) to the outskirts satellite cities of Seoul area through the "Revised Law Draft of SASMAQI". The SMAQMD has been alloted the allowable emission loads to the local governments on the basis of the carrying $PM_{10}$ capacity. However, in order to establish the effective air quality control strategy for $PM_{10}$, it is necessary to understand the corresponding sources which have a potential to directly impact ambient $PM_{10}$ concentration. To deal with the situations, many receptor methodologies have been developed to identify the origins of pollutants and to determine the contributions of sources of interests. The objective of this study was to extensively identify $PM_{10}$ sources and to estimate their contributions at the metropolitan area. $PM_{10}$ samples were simultaneously collected at the 3 semi-industrialized local cities in the Seoul metropolitan area such as Hwasung-si, Paju-si, and Icheon-si sites from April 15 to May 31, 2007. The samples collected on the teflon membrane filter by one $PM_{10}$ cyclone sampler were analyzed for trace metals and soluble ions and samples on the quartz fiber filter by another sampler were analyzed for OC and EC. Source apportionment study was then performed by using a positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model. A total of 6 sources were identified and their contributions were estimated in each monitoring site. Contribution results on Hwasung, Paju, and Icheon sites were as follows: 33%, 27%, and 27% from soil source, 26%, 26%, and 21% from secondary aerosol source, 11%, 11%, and 12% from biomass burning, 12%, 6%, and 5% from sea salt, 7%, 15%, and 19% from industrial related source, and finally 11%, 15%, and 16% from mobile and oil complex source, respectively. This study provides information on the major sources affecting air quality in the receptor sites and thus it will help to manage the ambient air quality in the metropolitan area by establishing reasonable control strategies, especially for the anthropogenic emission sources.

  • Polygonatum stenophyllum Maxim. is a native perennial herb to Korea belonging to family Liliaceae. Although it was removed from the endangered species list, since it inhabits the riverside, it has been threatened with damage to its populations due to frequent disturbances. In order to reveal the basic ecological characteristics of P. stenophyllum, This study was identified the life cycle of the aboveground part and was measured the number of flowers and fruits, which are reproductive organs of P. stenophyllum in riverside in Paju - si during the two years. As a result, aboveground part of P. stenophyllum appeared and grew rapidly until the end of May to about 1m. In early May, two buds per one peduncle were formed up to six pairs per floor. The flowers bloomed in turn from the base of the stem and to the top floor and the blooming occurred when the number of leaves was at least three. Fruits were formed in mid-June and matured by the end of September. The numbers of flowers and fruits were revealed that flowers bloomed in turn from the bottom of the stem to the top floor, the most intensively bloomed in the center part of the stem, and did not bloom from the floor closest to the ground and above the highest 5th node. This basic ecological characteristics of the P. stenophllyum grown in riverside identified in this study will be useful as basic data for their conservation.

  • On the base of the aggregate extraction statistics, this study tried to analyse the demand and supply of aggregate resources of each local government and provide directions for the stable and sustainable supply and demand of aggregate resources in the future. In 2019, aggregates were produced in 148 cities, about 65% of the 229 cities of Korea, but in 7 metropolitan cities with 74 local governments, only 19 cities developed the aggregate. It means that aggregate extraction is taking place in almost all regions in Korea. Sand and gravel were produced in 110 districts and 132 districts, respectively. By aggregate source, river aggregates were extracted in 4 local governments, land aggregates in 42 local governments, forest aggregates in 75 local governments, crushed aggregates in 105 local governments, and washing aggregates in 15 local governments. In other words, 81 district in Korea have not extracted land-based aggregate at all. 71 local governments produced only one type of aggregate, and 55 local governments developed two types of aggregate, and 22 local governments developed more that three types of aggregate. In 2019, the leading producing local government were, in descending order of volume, Ulju-gun, followed by Hwaseong-si, Cheongju-si, Pocheon-si, Paju-si, Yongin-si, Gimhae-si, Gwangju-si in Gyeonggi-do. 41 local governments have developed aggregates of more than 1 million m3, and the combined production of the 41 cities accounted for about 70% of national total. This shows that the aggregate extraction trend of local governments is becoming larger and more concentrated.
