  • Artificial acid rain(pH2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) was treated on the seeded pots of 4 species to examine its effects on germination, leaf injury and seedling growth. Aluminum ammonium sulfate solution (0.5, 1.0 and 2.5mM) and artificial acid rain (pH3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) were treated on the seeded germinators of 3 species to examine its effects on germination and radicle growth. Artificial acid rain was prepared by diluting sulfuric acid with ground water and ground water(pH6.5) was used as control. Artificial acid rain was sprayed to seeded pots three times per week. About 5mm of artificial acid rain was treated each time from early April to early October, 1991. Germination, seedling establishment, radicle growth, leaf injury and seedling growth were measured and compared among the treatments. The results were summarized as follows 1. Germination, seedling establishment rate of Pinus densiflora were highest on the pH5.0 pot whereas those of Ailanthus altissima was highest on the control pot, and those of Magnolia sieboldii showed the highest value on the pH3.0 pot. 2. The differences in seedling height of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were significant among the treatment levels of acid rain, whereas those of Magnolia sieboldii and Ailanthus altissima were not significant. Seedling heights of Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were highest on the pH3.0 pot, and that of Magnolia sieboldii was highest on the pH4.0 pot, and that of Ailanthus altissima was highest on the control pot. 3. Seedling dry weights of Pinus densiflora. Pinus rigida, and Ailanthus altissima differed significantly among the treatments, but that of Magnolia sieboldii did not differ. Highest seedling dry weights of Magnolia sieboldii and Ailanthus altissima were observed on the pH4.0 pot, and that of Pinus densiflora was observed on the pH3.0 pot, and that of Pinus rigida was observed on the pH5.0 pot. 4. With decrease of pH value of artificial acid rain, the number of injured needle and injured individual tended to be increased. 5. The differences in effects of soil acidity were highly significant among the treatments for all species. 6. Radicle growth of Pinus densiflora differed significantly among pH levels and aluminum concentrations.

  • The decay rates of organic matter were investigated and the leaching rates were determined from the concentration distribution of N,P,K, Ca and Na in the soil profile at Pinus rigida stand on Mt. Gwan-ak and at Pseudosasa japonica stand on Odong-do. In order to determine the leaching rates θo/W wazs substituted with KL in Towner's equation. Decay rates were 0.191 at Pinus stand on Mt. Gwan-ak and 0.234 at Pseudosasa stan don Odong-do. Concentration distributions of N,P, K and Na in soil profiles were corresponed with Towner's model curve. Leaching rates determined from concentration distributions were 0.086, 0.079, 0.041, 0.029, 0.096 on Mt. Gwan-ak and 0.080, 0.056, 0.051, 0.008, 0.028 on Odong-do. The soil of Pseudosasa stand showed on the whole lower leaching rates than that of Pinus stand. The soil of Pseudosasa stand showing higher decay rate and lower leaching rates contained more concentration of each nutrient than that of Pinus stand.

  • The production and decomposition rate of litters of major forest trees in Korea, such as Quercus acutissima, Quercus mogolica Robinia pseudoacacia Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergiana, Abies koreana,Phy'llostackys reticulata, were estimated by Olson model. The amount of mineral nutrients in litters and soil were measured, and the relationships among them were studied. The annual litter production was the most in the forest of broadleaved deciduous trees and the least in the forest of monocotyledonous trees. The decomposition rate of broadleaved deciduous litters was higher than that of coniferous litters and lower than that of R. pseudoacacia litters. The time required for the decomposition of half of the accumulated organic matter of R.pseudoacacia litter, Quercus litter, P. rigida litter, Ph. reticulata litter, P. thunbergiana litter and .4.koreana litter in the forest stands were 1.263 years, 2.290~2.365 years, 2.644 years, 4.660 years,4.750 years, 6.699 years respectively. The amounts of N in litters and the amounts of N returned to the soil in the forests of R. pseudoacacia. Quercus, Pinus were proportional to the decay rate of organic matter. Key words: Annual litter production, Decomposition rate.

  • Change of color of woods is a trouble frequently found in decorative wood products. In this paper, studies were carried out on discoloation sensitivities of wood specimens to iron (0.1%, $FeCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$), alkali (pH12.0, NaOH), acid (pH 1.0 $C_2H_2O_4$) and exposing to sunlight (40 hrs.). Four soft-woods and eleven hard-woods grown in Korea were used in this test. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In iron stain, strong discolored wood species were Larix leptolepis, Quercus mongolica. Zelkova serrata and Prunus yedoensis, and light discolored were Paulownia lomentosa and Pinus rigida. 2. In alkali stain. light discolored wood species were Abies holophylla, Kalopanax pictum, Populus ${\times}$ albaglandulosa, Acer mono, Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora, Quercus mongolica, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Prunus yedoensis, Zelkova serrata, Populus euramericana, Pinus koraiensis and Paulownia tomentosa, but there was no wood species of strong discolored compared with the color difference values of other reports. 3. In acid stain, light discolored wood species were Pinus rigida, Paulownia tomentosa. Pinus koraiensis, Quercus mongolica, Kalopanax piclum and Acer mone, but there was no strong discolored species compared with the color difference values of other reports. 4. In exposing to sunlight, strong discolored species were Larix leptolepis, Acer mono, Paulownia tomentosa, Populus euramericana, Pinus densijlora, Robinia pseudoacacia, Abies holophylla, Populus ${\times}$ albaglandulosa, Zelkova serrata, Prunus yedoensis and Pinus rigida, and light discolored was Alnus japonica. In general, it was shown that Korean wood species were susceptible to change of color by exposing to sunlight and iron stain compared with by alkali stain and acid stain.

  • We tested the seed viability of Pinus rigida using accelerated aging to discover optimum times and temperatures far artificially accelerated aging. Seeds were artificially aged at different temperatures and during different tines. The seed viability was affected by the accelerated aging and by temperature with a decline in germination and seed vigor. The aging index of P. rigida seed was 0.31 at $35^{\circ}C$ and seed viability was nearly lost after aging treatment at $40^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. The optimum temperature of P. rigida far the aging test was decided to be approximately $37^{\circ}C$ on the basis of the aging index. Inorganic materials and conductivity of leaching solution from aging seeds increased with the increase of aging period. The accelerated aging test was considered to be a suitable method to evaluate the seed viability of tree species. Because seed characters are much different among tree species, however, more studies need to be done to discover the optimum conditions for aging by tree species.

  • The embryos of Pinus taeda, P. rigida, and P. taeda ${\times}$ rigida were cultured for adventitious shoot regeneration in vitro. Culture media were modified from Gresshoff and Doy (MGD), Murashige and Skoog (MMS), Lloyd and McCown (MLM), and Schenk and Hildebrandt (MSH). NAA was added to initiation media at a concentration of 0.1 or 0.01 mg/l. BAP was used at the concentrations of 0.1. 0.5, 1, 2, or 5mg/l. Each explant was induced for 3-4 weeks on solid medium. All explants were cultured up to 16 weeks. Illumination was about $1506{\pm}540lux$ at the level of the tissues in the growth room with a temperature of $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. A 16-hour photoperiod per 24 hours was used. Half-strength medium was used for all the subcultures. For shoot production by loblolly pine, MMS, MLM, or MSH is preferred with 5 mg/l BAP with either 0.1 or 0.01 mg/l NAA. For shoot production by pitch pine, MMS, MLM, or MSH is recommended with 2 or 5 mg/l BAP with 0.1 mg/l NAA. For shoot production by the hybrid pine, MMS or MLM is more effective with 1, 2 or 5 mg/l BAP with 0.1 mg/l NAA. There were no differences recognized among the species tried in the patterns of bud formation and shoot development. Different composition of media, in major and minor salts or possibly in vitamins, should be tested for the two developmental stages of adventitious shoots ; the induction of shoot buds and the elongation of them into shoots.

  • The study investigated the forest vegetation structure of Kongju National University Forests in the vicinity of Seokjangri-dong to provide the information needed for efficient use and management. It conducted a Z-M phytosociological vegetation survey in 60 quadrate plots in August 2019 and generated the actual vegetation map by analyzing the physiognomic community classification and mean importance value. The physiognomic community classification showed five vegetation community types: Quercus acutissima community, Pinus densiflora community, Quercus variabilis community, Pinus rigida community, and Quercus serrata community. The relative importance value in the Q. acutissima community was 31.4% for Q. acutissima, 9.6% for Prunus spp., and 9.0% for Q. variabilis. In the P. densiflora community, it was 24.9% for P. densiflora, 12.4% for Q. acutissima, and 11.5% for Q. serrata. In the Q. variabilis community, it was 25.3% for Q. variabilis, 9.8% for Prunus spp., and 8.5% for Q. acutissima. In the P. rigida community, it was 28.4% for P. rigida 28.4%, 10.0% for Q. acutissima, and 9.3% for P. densiflora. In the Q. serrata community, it was 27.0% for Q. serrata, 11.3% for Q. aliena, and 11.5% for Styrax japonica. The actual vegetation map based on the uppermost dominant species to identify the forest vegetation's spatial distribution characteristics indicated that the natural vegetation covered the most with 87.5%, the number of vegetation patches was 87, and the average area per patch was 1.46ha.

  • Chainsaw use for motor-manual timber harvesting in South Korea is associated with worker safety issues. However, forestry operations such as timber harvesting have already been mechanized to reduce hazards to workers and increase productivity. This study analyzed the productivities and costs of felling and processing, felling and processing using an excavator-based stroke harvester for Pinus rigida and Quercus mongolica stands. To efficiently operate the stroke harvester, we developed a regression equation to estimate the productivities of felling and processing, felling, and processing operations, and we conducted sensitivity analysis of the operation costs using DBH and machine utilization. The felling and processing productivity was 6.53 and 4.02 m3/SMH for P. rigida a nd Q. mongolica, respectively, and the cost was 17,983 and 29,210 won/m3, respectively. The felling productivity for P. rigida a nd Q. mongolica wa s 40.9 and 23.0 m3/SMH, respectively, and the cost was 2,667 and 4,743 won/m3, respectively. The processing productivity for P. rigida and Q. mongolica was 8.25 and 7.75 m3/SMH, respectively, and the cost was 15,296 and 16,283 won/m3, respectively. In the developed regression equation, the DBH, traveling distance, and number of cuttings were found to be important factors (p<0.05). Therefore, it is necessary to construct a DB considering the various conditions and species associated with harvester operations, and further research is needed to increase the accuracy of predicting operation productivity and costs.

  • This study was carried out to reveal the forest land effect on water purification in mountainous watersheds. Rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, soil and stream water were monitored by pH, electrical conductivity(EC), and dissolved oxygen(DO) in Daehan-Ri and Parkdal-Ri catchments. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Rainfall pH values of Parkdal-Ri and Daehan-Ri were 7.6 and 6.4, respectively. 2. Comparing stemflow and throughfall of Pinus densiflora with Pinus rigida, the pH values of Pinus densiflora were 4.32 and 4.22 and the pH of Pinus rigida were 3.34 and 4.81, respectively. The EC values of Pinus densiflora were $119.7{\mu}S/cm$ and $96.8{\mu}S/cm$ and EC of Pinus rigida were $230.0{\mu}S/cm$ and $82.0{\mu}S/cm$. 3. All pH values were decreased as the streamflow increased except long-term runoff in Daehan-Ri. The EC values also were increased as the streamflow increased, but EC of short-term runoff in Daehan-Ri was gradually decreased as the streamflow increased due to entrance of throughfall which has high EC values at the beginning of rainfall events. The DO concentrations of all experimental plots were elevated as the streamflow increased, because reaeration occurs at the surface of the stream as the increased discharge make turbulence. 4. pH of Stemflow and throughfall in Pinus densiflora were lower than in Quercus acutissima, but EC values were higher in Pinus densiflora. 5. Water purification was mostly influenced by forest soil in forest hydrological processes. 6. Stemflow and throughfall were more influenced by dry deposition and organic acid in crown and bark than those of wet deposition. During the stemflow and throughfall passed forest soil, these acidic stemflow and throughfall were neutralized, and stream water quality was neutral or slightly alkaline.
