Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of calcium concentration in saliva on dental caries activity after consuming calcium. Methods: A total of 59 adult women aged 20 to 40 years were surveyed for calcium intake. The daily average calcium intake was analyzed through dietary records of the subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups based on daily average calcium intake. Salivary pH and concentrations of minerals in the saliva were obtained from A group and B group. Calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) and magnesium ($Mg^{2+}$) concentrations in saliva were measured by HPLC-Ion chromatography using 15 mM sulfuric acid. The dental caries activity test was quantified by salivary buffer capacity test and plaque pH test. Results: The mean $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations of A group was $12.75{\mu}g/m$, the mean $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations in the B group was $16.30{\mu}g/mL$ (p<0.05) and respectively, $Mg^{2+}$ concentrations were found to be $0.48{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.51{\mu}g/mL$. Calcium intake and calcium concentration in saliva showed a significant correlation (r=0.380). Conclusions: The mean $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations in saliva was higher in the high calcium intake group. Therefore, calcium intake in saliva was correlated with dental caries.
Our objective was to determine the differences in the rate and extent of dry matter digestion between barley subjected to differing agronomic variables. Two malting barley varieties, Copeland and Metcalfe were seeded at rates of 200 and 400 plants/$m^2$. Each of these varieties received nitrogen fertilizer at rates of 0, 30, 60 and 120 kg/ha, resulting in a total of 20 different barley grain samples. Samples were ground through a 6mm screen and approximately 3 g of each weighed into 50 ${\mu}m$ Dacron bags and sealed. The bags were incubated in three ruminally cannulated Holstein cattle for periods of 0, 3, 6 and 24 h. Using the data obtained from these incubations, rates of digestion were able to be predicted. The soluble fraction ranged from 0.229-0.327, the slowly degradable fraction ranged from 0.461-0.656, and the undegradable fraction ranged from 0.038-0.299. The rates of digestion ranged from 0.127-0.165 $h^{-1}$ and the effective degradability ranged from 0.527-0.757. At the Canora location, the Copeland samples which received 120 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilizer had a significantly lower (p = 0.013) soluble fraction than the rest of the samples at that location. A significant interaction (p = 0.009) was seen between the seeding rate and nitrogen fertilizer application with samples from the Canora location, as well as significant differences (p = 0.029) between nitrogen application rates in samples from the Indian head location. The rate of digestion of samples from the Indian head location differed (p = 0.020) between the two seeding rates, with samples seeded at 200 seed/$m^2$ having a slightly higher rate of degradation. Differences in the effective degradability were seen between the different nitrogen application rates with samples from both the Canora and Indian head locations, as well as an (p = 0.004) interaction between the seeding rate and nitrogen fertilizer application rate. Although there was not a clear correlation between the different variables, both nitrogen application and seeding rate did have a significant effect on the rates and extent of digestion across each of the four locations.

The effects of macronutrients $(NO_3^-,\; NH_4^+\;and\;PO_4^{3-})$ on cell growth and triterpenoids production in Centella asiatica cell suspension cultures were analyzed using the BoxBehnken response surface model experimental design. In screening and optimization experiments, $PO_4^{3-}$ as a single factor significantly influenced cell growth where increasing the phosphate level from 0.1 to 2.4 or 2.6 mM, elevated cell growth from 3.9 to $14\~16g/L$. The optimum values predicted from the response surface model are 5.05mM $NH_4^+$, 15.0mM $NO_3^-$ and 2.6mM $PO_4^{3-}$, yielding 16.0g/L cell dry weight with $99\%$ fitness to the experimental data. While the $NH_4^+-NO_3^-$ interaction influenced cell growth positively in the optimization experiment, $NH_4^+$ and $NO_3^-$ as single factors; and interactions of $NO_3^--PO_4^{3-},\;NH_4^+-PO_4^{3-}$ and $NH_4^+-NO_3^-$ were all negative in the screening experiment. Cell growth and the final pH level were positively affected by $PO_4^{3-}$, but negatively affected by $NH_4^+\;and\;NH_4^+-PO_4^{3-}$ interactions. The different effects of factors and their interactions on cell growth and final pH are influenced by a broad or narrow range of macronutrient concentrations. The productions of triterpenoids however were lower than 4mg/g cell dry weight.
The flight characteristics of 11 cinereous vultures (Aegypius monachus) were analyzed by a global positioning system (GPS) tracker(WT-300; KoEco, Inc.). The wintering period in Korea averaged 131 days (SD=17.4) and the average flight rate was 19.6%. The flight altitude was below 100 m for 21.6% of the flight, 101-200 m for 25.3%, 201-300 m for 19.0%, and below 300 m for 65.9%. There was a positive correlation (r=0.929) between the hourly flight rate and altitude. The predominant monthly flight altitude was 101-200 m (p<0.05). The wintering cinereous vultures lowered their flight rate and flew at an altitude of less than 300 m. This is thought to be an efficient way to find food through social interaction.

A simple and convenient method of immobilizing dextransucrase via an affinity interaction is described, along with the use of this system to synthesize leucrose. Dextransucrase was produced in sucrose-free medium by fermenting a constitutive mutant of Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-512F and was separated using an ultrafiltration membrane. The purified enzyme was free of dextran polymer, which previously was always found with the sucrose-induced enzyme. Therefore, it was possible to immobilize the enzyme on dextran-based resins using an affinity interaction. Sephadex G-200 was the best resin for immobilizing the dextransucrase and gave a fast flow rate through the packed column. The immobilized dextransucrase retained more than 80% of its specific activity after immobilization ($K_m\;=\;18.1\;mM$ and $k_{cat}\;=\;450\;sec^{-1}$ vs. 13.1 mM and $640\;sec^{-1}$, respectively, for the free enzyme). The immobilized dextransucrase showed improved stability over a pH range of 4.0 to 6.5 and at moderately high temperatures over $40^{\circ}C$. When immobilized dextransucrase was used to synthesize leucrose via the transfer reaction with sucrose and fructose, about 74% of the sucrose was converted into leucrose after one day, and the half-life of the enzyme activity was 15 days. Regeneration of the resin by supplementation with dextransucrase enabled the recovery of the initial activity of the system, but both the reaction and the flow rate were lower, probably owing to the accumulation of dextran inside the resin.
[Purpose] The OPG/RANK/RANKL signaling is a new family of bone metabolism biomarkers belonging to the immune system. However, the bone metabolism response to long-term exercise in the RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling is less evident. The purpose of this study was to examine these biomarkers in healthy college females after 12-weeks combined exercise intervention. [Methods] Participants (N=22, 22.4±1.3yrs) were randomly divided in two different group: 12 in the control group and 10 in the exercise group performing combined exercise program that interventions was conducted 3 times per week for 12 weeks. The outcome measures included serum concentrations of RANKL, OPG and bone metabolic cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, and mRNA expressions of same variables from PBMC. VO2max and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured at before and after exercise intervention. [Results] There were no significant differences in the serum RANKL, OPG concentrations and all RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling mRNA expression on interaction effect between group and time (NS). Also no significant differences were found in the serum TNF-α and IL-6 concentrations and mRNA expression (NS). The IL-6 mRNA expression only showed significant difference in the main effect of groups (p<.05). There were also no significant differences in the VO2max and BMD on interaction effect between group and time (NS). [Conclusion] These results suggested that there were no effects on bone mineral density and RANKL/RANK/OPG signaling without the effect of 8-weeks combined exercise on cardiovascular endurance fitness.
A recently introduced helium ion microscopy (HIM) was employed to observe uncoated pine leaf specimens. Adult leaves were collected from the seedlings of Pinus densiflora and P. rigida, air-dried at room temperature, and observed by HIM without metal coating. Ovoid or round stomata and distinct Florin rings could be discerned. The epicuticular waxes were present in the epistomatal chambers and Florin rings of stomata on the leaf surface. The epicuticular waxes were mostly straight, cylindrical, and ca. 1 ${\mu}m$ in length. The epistomatal chambers of P. rigida were filled with the epicuticular waxes, whereas those of P. densiflora were not filled with the epicuticular waxes. Based on their micromorphology, the epicuticular wax structures of the pine species were identified as tubules. These results suggest that the HIM could be used for the investigation of the plant stomata and epicuticular waxes of uncoated plant leaves. Due to the smaller ion probe and interaction volume, the HIM has advantages over conventional field emission scanning electron microscopy in terms of image resolution and charge neutralization.
The ionic equilibira in mixed solutions of cuprous and cupric chloride were analyzed by considering chemical equilibria, mass and charge balance equations. The activity coefficients of solutes were calculated by using Bromley equation. Required thermodynamic constants and interaction parameters were evaluated from the data reported in the literature. The effect of NaCl and CuCl concentrations on the pH and potential of the mixed solutions was explained in terms of the variation in the concentration of solutes and in the activity of hydrogen ion. The calculated pH values of the mixed solutions agreed well with the measured values. However, the calculated values for the potential of the mixed solutions were lower than the measured values, indicating the necessity of considering the complex formation between cuprous and chloride ion, such as $Cu^2Cl{_4}^{2-}$ and $Cu_3Cl{_6}^{3-}$.

The objective of this study is theoretical and empirical evaluation of the flexural performance of concrete filled pretensioned spun high strength concrete pile with ring type composite shear connectors (CFP pile). The specimens are comprised of standard CFP pile, PHC pile+composite shear connector+filed concrete (CFP-N-N), standard CFP pile with $1^{st}$ reinforcements (H13-8ea), and standard CFP pile with $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ reinforcements(H19-8ea). Flexural performance evaluation results showed that the ductility is improved with increased steel ratio, which leads to the increased maximum load by 46.4% (with $1^{st}$ reinforcement) and 103.9% (with $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ reinforcements) compared to standard CFP ( CFP-N-N). Comparing with the predicted ultimate limit state values of the CFP pile design method and the experimental results, the design method presented in this study is reasonable since safety factor of 1.23 and 1.40 times for each reinforcement step are secured.

A bacterial strain NS-83 isolated from soil was able to produce an extracellular thermostable protease. The strain was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on its morphological and physiological characteristics. A thermostable protease from this strain has been purified to homogeneity as judged by SDS-PAGE and isoelectric focusing. The purification procedures included hydrophobic interaction, ion exchange, and gel filtration chromatography. The $M_r$ and the pl of the enzyme were 32,000 and 5.9, respectively. The optimal pH at 55$^{\circ}C$ and the optimal temperature at pH 7.0 were 8.0 and 60$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The D-values of the enzyme at 60, 65, and 70$^{\circ}C$ were 22, 2.1, and 0.75 hrs, respectively. The enzyme activity was significantly inhibited in the presence of 1 mM o-phenanthroline or EDTA, suggesting that the enzyme is metalloprotease. The $K_m$, and $V_{max}$ for Hammarsten casein were found to be 3.2 mg/ml and 0.918 unit/ml, respectively. These enzymatic properties were similar to those of elastase produced from P. aeruginosa IFO 3455, but the enzyme was clearly different from the reported elastase, in respect to $Ca^{++}$ effects on enzyme-thermostability. This property, together with amino acid composition analysis, confirmed that the enzyme differs from the known P. aeruginosa elastase.
