To develope shale play which is one of unconventional energy resources, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are necessary and those are applied to the place where the differential horizontal stress ratio (DHSR) is low. The differential horizontal stress ratio is generally calculated by the minimum and maximum horizontal stress, but it is also calculated from dynamic elastic constants and anisotropic parameters. In this study we analyzed anisotropic properties through the core samples from Danyang limestone and calculated DHSR. The three types of core samples shaped in three directions (vertical, parallel and 45 degree to bedding) were used for laboratory test. We measured P-, S-wave velocities, and density and then calculated dynamic elastic constants, compliance and DHSR. According to the results of the core sample analysis the calculated DHSR is 0.185. Thomsen parameters of the Danyang limestone used in this study are characterized by the P- and S-wave velocities varying along the bedding symmetry axis. It is observed that the DHSR value is more affected by the change in compliance value than the Poisson's ratio. It is necessary to measure SH-wave velocity for more correct petrophysical properties.

This study was conducted to examine the differences between dynamic and static elastic constants by use of some laboratory tests of cement mortar specimens which have different water/cement mixing ratios. Specific gravity measurement, ultrasonic velocity estimating and uniaxial compression test were adopted to acquire the dynamic and static elastic constants. Digital data acquisition and processing enhanced the accuracy of estimating the velocities of specimens drastically, Also, the method using the gradient of propagation delay time in according to increment of specimen length more enhanced the accuracy than the method using the only one specimen length over total propagation time. The correlation between density and the P and S wave velocity of specimens shows reliable positive relation and the correlation between density and the strength of uniaxial compression has the similar relationship. The dynamic Young's modulus $(E_D)$ is alway greater than the static Young's modulus $(E_S)$ and there is increasing tendency of the ratio $(E_D/E_S)$ according to the increase of density or strength of the specimens. On the other hand, there is no typical relationship between dynamic Poisson's ratio $({\nu}_D)$ and static Poisson's ratio $({\nu}_S)$ and just the ratio of ${\nu}_D/{\nu}_S$ ranges front 69 to 122 %.
We developed a novel polarization filter to separate linearly polarized waves from elliptically polarized waves in an infinite homogeneous medium and at the free surface using methods of multicomponent complex trace analysis. Sensitivity to filter parameters were examined using synthetic data simulating particle motions in a homogeneous medium. For known amplitude ratios of horizontal-to-vertical components of P and Rayleigh waves $C_L$ and $C_R$, respectively, the polarization filter precisely removes Rayleigh waves. Errors in the vertical and horizontal components of the filtered results increase with the ratio $C_R$/$C_L$ and the product $C_R$.$C_L$, respectively. The vertical component errors also increase rapidly as the ratios of applied-to-modeled values of $C_L$ and $C_R$ ($C_L'$/$C_L$ and $C_R'$/$C_R$) decrease, and are sensitive to $C_R'$/$C_R$ and $C_L'$/$C_L$ for small and large incidence angles, respectively. Errors of the filter are exactly the same for shear waves when the incidence angle is the supplementary of P-wave incidence angle.
A standard for national seismological observatory was proposed on 1999. Since then, Quanterra digitizer has been installed and is operating on almost all of seismic stations which belong to major seismic monitoring organizations. Quanterra digitizer produce and transmit real-time event packet and data packet. Characteristics of event packet and arrival time of each channel's data packet on data center were investigated. Packet selection criteria using signal to noise ratio (hereafter SNR) and signal period from real-time event packet based on 100 samples per second (hereafter sps) velocity data were developed. Estimation of epicenter using time information of the selected event packet were performed and tested. A series of experiment show that event packets were received approximately 3~4 second earlier than data packets and the number of event packet was only 0.3% compare to data packets. Just about 5% against all of event packets were selected as event packet were related P wave of real earthquake. Using the selected event packets we can estimate an epicenter with misfit less than 10 km within 20 sec for local earthquake over magnitude 2.5.
Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is an optimization process of fitting observed and modeled data to reconstruct high-resolution subsurface physical models. In acoustic FWI (AFWI), pressure data acquired using a marine streamer has mainly been used to reconstruct the subsurface P-wave velocity models. With recent advances in marine seismic-acquisition techniques, acquiring multi-component data in marine environments have become increasingly common. Thus, AFWI strategies must be developed to effectively use marine multi-component data. Herein, we proposed an AFWI strategy using horizontal and vertical particle-acceleration data. By analyzing the modeled acoustic data and conducting sensitivity kernel analysis, we first investigated the characteristics of each data component using AFWI. Common-shot gathers show that direct, diving, and reflection waves appearing in the pressure data are separated in each component of the particle-acceleration data. Sensitivity kernel analyses show that the horizontal particle-acceleration wavefields typically contribute to the recovery of the long-wavelength structures in the shallow part of the model, and the vertical particle-acceleration wavefields are generally required to reconstruct long- and short-wavelength structures in the deep parts and over the whole area of a given model. Finally, we present a sequential-inversion strategy for using the particle-acceleration wavefields. We believe that this approach can be used to reconstruct a reasonable P-wave velocity model, even when the pressure data is not available.
Specific survey objectives often cannot be met using only one geophysical method, as each method's results are influenced by the specific physical properties of subsurface materials. In particular, areas susceptible to geological hazards require investigation using more than one method in order to reduce risks to life and property. Instead of analyzing the results from each method separately, this work develops a four-quadrant criterion for classifying areas of levees as safe or weak. The assessment is based on statistically determined thresholds of seismic velocity (P-wave velocity from seismic refraction and S-wave velocity from multichannel analysis of surface waves) and electrical resistivity. Thresholds are determined by subtracting the standard deviation from the mean during performance testing of this correlation technique applied to model data of four horizontal and inclined fracture zones. Compared with results from the crossplot of resistivity and P-wave velocity, crossplot analysis using resistivity and S-wave velocity data provides more reliable information on the soil type, ground stiffness, and lithological characteristics of the levee system. A loose and sandy zone (represented by low S-wave velocity and high resistivity) falling within the second quadrant is interpreted to be a weak zone. This interpretation is well supported by the N values from standard penetrating test for the central core.
In this study, hypocentor parameters of some local and regional earthquakes and explosions, including focal depth and origin time, were redetermined by using a single station of three-component. We attempt to do the job by the combination of polarization analyses, by which azimuths and trial epicenters of earthquakes can be figured out, and a layered constant velocity model, on the basis of which theoretical travel times can be computed to match a series of input seismic phases of the event. Magnitudes were determined by using coda duration. Results, which correspond to the least misfit, showed that the average focal depth of all earthquakes in this study is around 15km, which fits well to that by investigation (Kang and Choi, 1993).
Jurassic granites of three sites, Pocheon, Geochang and Habcheon, were tested to investigate the effect of microcracks on Physical and mechanical properties of the granites. Fifteen oriented core specimens were used for the physical property test. The test result shows that porosity is almost proportioned to water content. P-wave velocity is the highest in the direction of axis ‘H’, intersection of two major microcrack sets and the lowest in the axis ‘R’, normal to the rift plane. Compressional strength tests were carried out for each core specimen taken parallel with axes ‘R’, ‘G’ and ‘H’, measuring strains. The results revealed a strong correlation between microcrack orientation and other mechanical properties such as rock strength.
Care should be taken when performing the P and S wave velocity loggings. Some of them are the effect of casing that is installed to prevent the borehole collapsing when the drilling is done on the loose ground such as soil and/or soft rock, and the discrepancy of the velocities of the same media according to the difference of the source wave frequency spectrum. To overcome these difficulties, the following suggestions are recommended; (1) try a careful drilling technique that can eliminate the necessity of the casing, and (2) apply the logging methods with the proper frequency spectrum that is appropriate to the object of the velocity logging.

In this study, a P wave emphasizing and detection algorithm from ECG signal was proposed to read arrhythmia. The algorithm uses two slope tracing waveform, the descending slope tracing wave and the ascending slope tracing wave, developed for efficient determination of slope inverting points and sudden slope changing points. The algorithm generates the slope tracing waveform which trace the original ECG wave, and subtracts one tracing wave from the other to detect P and T waves. The algorithm has been applied to MIT/BIH database in order to verify its efficacy and validity in practical applications.
