It is well known that coagulation pretreatment can reduce foulants prior to membrane filtration. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of coagulation on fouling of ceramic microfiltration membrane($0.1 {\mu}m$) using pilot plant of $150m^3/day/train$ capacity. Train A membrane system has pretreatment process of ozonation and coagulation while train B has only coagulation. Two types of coagulation operation were investigated: back mixer(rapid mixing with or without slow mixing) which is a conventional mechanically stirred mixer and an inline static mixer. Ozone dose rate for train A was 1 mg/L and ozone contact time was 12 min. The coagulation dose(PACl 10% as $Al_2O_3$) rate was changed 20~40 mg/L according to experimental schedule. In this experimental conditions, the coagulation of back mixer type with rapid mixing(GT=72,000) and slow mixing(GT=45,000) was the best effective in reduction of ceramic membrane fouling regardless preozonation. Especially, the effect of inline static mixer was sensitive to change in water quality. Ozonation mainly affected irreversible fouling rather than reversible fouling in accordance with less adsorption of NOM on the membrane surface. Thus, the increase rate of the nomalized TMP(trans membrane pressure) at $25^{\circ}C$ for train A was relatively lower than that of train B under same coagulation process with same coagulant dosage. The best performance of ceramic membrane appeared in case of combined process with ozonation, therefore this integrated process is able to archive less coagulant dosing and secure a stability of ceramic membrane system.
A comprehensive fractionation technique was applied to a set of water samples obtained along drinking water treatment process with ozonation and biological activated carbon (BAC) process to obtain detailed profiles of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and to evaluate the haloacetic acid (HAA) formation potentials of these DOM fractions. The results indicated that coagulation-sedimentation-sand filtration treatment showed limited ability to remove hydrophilic fraction (28%), while removal of hydrophobic and transphilic fraction were 57% and 40%, respectively. And ozonation and BAC treatment showed limited ability to remove hydrophobic fractions (6%), while removal of hydrophilic and transphilic fractions were 25% and 18%. The haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP)/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) of hydrophilic fraction was the highest along the treatment train and HAAFP/DOC of hydrophilic fraction was higher than hydrophobic and transphilic fraction as 23%~30%, because of better removal for hydrophobic fraction both in concentration and reactivity.
The removal efficiency of herbicide glyphosate in a drinking water treatment system was investigated. Four major processes of a drinking water treatment system were selected and experiments were performed separately including; treatments by sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), a sedimentation process by PAC (polyaluminum chloride), ozonation and a GAC (granular activated carbon) treatment. In the sodium hypochlorite experiment, about 50% of the glyphosate was removed by 2 mg/L of hypochlorite and more than 90% was eliminated when 5 mg/L of NaOCl was applied. Also, AMPA, the main metabolite of glyphosate, was treated with hypochlorite. More than 30% of the AMPA was removed by 2 mg/L of hypochlorite and 50% by 5 mg/L. In the PAC experiment, it was determined that more than 60% could be removed. Further experiments were performed and the results indicated that the removed amount was dependent upon the amount of soil and upon the properties of the soil especially that of clay minerals. Ozonation could oxidize glyphosate to its byproducts at about a level of 50%. In contrast, when 1 mg/L of glyphosate was treated with GAC, the amount removed was negligible. The results of this experiment were conclusive. We confirmed that drinking water, which has been contaminated with water polluted with glyphosate can be effectively purified by the application of the drinking water treatment processes currently used.
The degradation efficiencies of phenol in aqueous solution were studied by semi-continuous experiments in the processes of ozone alone, ozone/bulky $Co_3O_4$ and ozone/$Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles. Catalyst samples (bulky $Co_3O_4$ and $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles) were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, $pH_{pzc}$ and the density of surface hydroxyl groups of the two catalyst samples were also measured. The catalytic activity of $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was investigated for the removal of phenol in aqueous solutions under different reaction temperatures. Tert-butyl alcohol had little effect on the catalytic ozonation processes. Based on these results, the possible catalytic ozonation mechanism of phenol by $Co_3O_4$ nanoparticles was proposed as a reaction process between ozone molecules and pollutants.
The ozonation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was performed at 20℃ using a pilot scale countercurrent bubble column reactor. Ozonation systems were combined with UV irradiation and TiO2 addition. As the oxidation reaction proceeded in each treatment system, the pH of the sample decreased and in the O3/UV/TiO2 system, the pH change was the largest from 4.54 to 2.02. Under these experimental conditions, the scavenger impact of carbonate is negligible. The highest COD and TOC removal rate was observed in the O3/UV/TiO2 system due to the UV irradiation and the photocatalytic effect of TiO2. Also, the highest mineralization ratio(ε) value is 0.2 in the O3/UV/TiO2 system, which means theoxidation capacity of the systems. The highest SMX degradation rate constants calculated by COD and TOC values (COD and TOC) were 2.15 × 10-4 sec-1 and 1.00 × 10-4 sec-1 in the O3/UV/TiO2 system, respectively. The activation energy (Ea) of ozone treatment follows the Arrhenius law. It was calculated based on COD and TOC. Each activation energy decreased in order of single O3> O3/TiO2> O3/UV > O3/UV/TiO2 system. The result showed that ΔH≠ is more effective than ΔS≠ in each SMX ozontaionsystem, that is characteristic of the common oxidation reaction.
In this study treatment efficiencies of methylene blue were evaluated in term of BOD, COD, TOC, absorbance and initial decolorization rates. Ozonation of the dye in distilled water was performed in a laboratory scale cylindrical batch reactor. The decolorization process of methylene blue was carried out by bubbling ozone at the bottom of a bubble column reactor containing the dye solution. Decolorization, determined by measuring the light absorbance at the maximum wavelength in the (${\lambda}_{max}$, 660 nm), was almost complete after 40 min with an ozone concentration of $50{\pm}10mg/L$. The $TOC/TOC_0$ ratio after ozonation was about 83.8%, the COD was diminished to 44.0% of the initial value. The $BOD_5/COD$ ratio was increased from 64.2% to about 90.8%, indicating an enhancement of biodegradable compounds in the ozonated solutions. The pseudo first-order rate constants of the ozonation was $3.30{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$ and the activation energy was $3.01kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$.
While various aspects affect river water quality, reduction of water flow rate during dry seasons is one of the most significant factors causing severe water pollution in river water environment. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying a physicochemical method (sand filtration + ozonation) for improving river water quality within a short period. The parameters analyzed and assessed were $COD_{cr}$, BOD, SS and color. The source river water had a severe pollution level showing COD 8.8~17.2 mg/L (ave. 11.9 mg/L), BOD 4.8~13.3 mg/L (ave. 8.3 mg/L), SS 9.0~22.1 mg/L (ave. 12.8 mg/L) and color 34.4~77.1 degree (ave. 56.5 degree) during the experimental periods. The variation trends showed a relatively low correlation between BOD and COD and between color and COD, while SS showed very low correlation with other parameters. The combined process of sand filtration and ozonation showed averaged removal efficiency of COD 37.2%, BOD 48.4%, SS 60.1% and colority 45.1%, respectively. The marked change of BOD level from 8.3 mg/L to 4.3 mg/L under the experimental conditions in this study implied the improvement of class V to class III set by the river water quality standard in Korea.

Ozonation is a promising process that can effectively reduce the occurrence of micropollutants and pathogen in water. This study investigated the performance of ozonation for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plant. Moreover, the disinfection potential of ozonation applied for PPCPs removal was discussed. Secondary effluent filtered by sand filter was used for tested water, and ozonation was performed under 2, 4 and 6 mg/L of ozone doses. As a result, 6 mg/L of ozone dose (ozone consumption : 4.4 mg/L) was essential for the effective removal of 37 PPCPs in tested water. Several previous studies showed that the operation condition could achieve approximately 3 log inactivation of total coliform and enteroviruses. On the other hand, dissolved ozone concentration in tested water increased by 1.8 mg/L under 6 mg/L of ozone dose, probably resulting in the increase of bromate formation potential. This result implies that as alternatives to suppress the bromate formation potential during the oxidation of PPCPs by ozone, investigations on advanced oxidation processes are required.
The changes in $UV_{254}$ and concentrations of $H_2O_2$ formed by ozonation of aqueous humic acid in ozone/high pH, peroxone process and in the presence of radical scavenger, $HCO_3{^-}$ were investigated. This study confirmed that the formation of $H_2O_2$ by ozonation may undergo different reaction pathways compared to those of $UV_{254}$ reduction in the degradation of the humic acid. The concentration of $H_2O_2$ produced by ozonation was found to be increased with decreasing pH of the sample solution due to the higher stability of ozone molecules at acidic conditions. On the while, $UV_{254}$ reduction was found to be higher at alkaline conditions or larger amount of $H_2O_2$ additions as a radical promoter in which the producing of ${\cdot}OH$, ${\cdot}HO_2$ radicals can be more favorable. From the results, it has been suggested that the formation of $H_2O_2$ by ozonation depends mainly on the direct reactions of ozone with humic acid molecules, while $UV_{254}$ reduction is affected by both the indirect reactions of the radicals and direct reactions of ozone with humic acid.
With a belief of high water quality production and less chemical usage, membrane technology including Microfiltration (MF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Nanofiltration(NF) is being employed more and more in drinking water treatment process. However, due to higher energy consumption of UF and NF, MF is normally used for drinking water treatment especially in a plant of large scale. In this investigation, performance ofsand filtration and membrane filtration was compared regarding removal of various water quality parameters, such as TOC, DOC, KMnO4 consumption, THMFP, and HAAFP. Two lines of pilot plant have been operated, one of which line is a traditional advanced water treatment process which includes sedimentation, sand filtration, ozonation, and activated carbon, and the other line is an alternative treatment process which includes sedimentation with inclined plate, MF membrane, ozonation, and activated carbon. For the first about 4months of period, MF filtration showed similar or little bit higher performance than sand filtration. However, after about 4month later, sand filtration showed much higher performance in removing all parameters monitored in the investigation. It was found that sand filtration is a better option than MF filtration as far as microbial community is fully activated in sand filter bed.
