We have introduced multifunctional ITO single thin films formed by normal sputtering system equipped with a plasma limiter which effectively blocks the bombardment of energetic negative oxygen ions. MFSS ITO also possesses high gas diffusion barrier properties simultaneously low resistivity even it deposited at room temperature without post annealing on plastic substrate. Nano-crystalline enhancement by Ar energy has energy window from 20 to 30 eV under blocking NOI condition. Effect of blocking NOI and optimal Ar energy window enhancement facilitate that resistivity is minimized to $3.61{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ and the WVTR of 100 nm thick MFSS ITO is $3.9{\times}10^{-3}g/(m^2day)$ which is measured under environmental conditions of 90% relative humidity and 50oC that corresponds to a value of ${\sim}10^{-5}g/(m^2day)$ at room temperature. The multifunctional MFSS ITO with low resistivity, and low gas permeability will be highly valuable for plastic electronics applications.
Actively growin Excherichia coli(KCTC 1039) cells were treated with paraquat (1, 1'-dimethyl-4, 4'-bipyridili-um dichloride) by cultivating them in the presence of 1.0mM paraquat. The treatment was carried out with or without shaking to understand the effect of oxygen on paraquat action to thebacterial superoxide dismutase (SOd). By the treatment with vigorous shaking , population growth of the organism almostly stopped and specific activities of SOD of the cells drastically decreased. On contrast ot it, the herbicide showed only l limited inhibitory action on bacterial growth and SOD activity by stationary treatment. Proteins prepared from parquat-treated cells divided into two peaks by Sephacryl column chormatogrpahy, while proteins from the intact cells formed a single peak. Cytoplasmic proteins and plasma membrane proteins of intact cells formed separated three peaks by Sephadex G-75 column chormatography. respectively. Among them the second peak disappeared by paraquat treatment , while the third peak became more apparent. Fractions from the first and the third peak showed SOD activity. Paraquat was detected from the same fractions.
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) produced by chemical vapor deposition were treated with acidic solution for purification and oxidization of CNTs. The surface modification of the oxidized CNTs was achieved by amine treatment and oxygen plasma treatment. The functionalized CNTs were embedded in the epoxy resin by sonication method and the resulting composite was investigated by FESEM. Rheological and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were measured by AR2000 and Instron. The rheological properties and dispersion of modified CNTs/epoxy composites were improved as CNTs were modified, because the modification of CNTs led to a improvement interaction between the CNTs and the epoxy resin. In addition to this, mechanical properties are also improved because of the effective stress transfer between the CNTs and the polymer.
Thed effects of sputter gas pressure and substrate surface micro-roughness on the microstructure and surface topography have been investigated in the Cu thin films sputter deposited onto polyimide substrates. The surface roughness of polyimide was controlled by oxygen rf plasma treatment. In the Cu film deposited at the pressure of 5 mtorr, the surface is smooth and the columnar structure is not visible regardless of polyimide surface more open boundaries. The polyimide surface roughness enhances these effects, These phenomena can be explained in therm of atomic shadowing effect.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Glutathione S-transferase (GST) forms a multigene family of phase II detoxification enzymes which are involved in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species. This study examines whether daily supplementation of kale juice can modulate blood pressure (BP), levels of lipid profiles, and blood glucose, and whether this modulation could be affected by the GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms. SUBJECTS/METHODS: 84 subclinical hypertensive patients showing systolic BP over 130 mmHg or diastolic BP over 85 mmHg received 300 ml/day of kale juice for 6 weeks, and blood samples were collected on 0-week and 6-week in order to evaluate plasma lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol) and blood glucose. RESULTS: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly decreased in all patients regardless of their GSTM1 or GSTT1 polymorphisms after kale juice supplementation. Blood glucose level was decreased only in the GSTM1-present genotype, and plasma lipid profiles showed no difference in both the GSTM1-null and GSTM1-present genotypes. In the case of GSTT1, on the other hand, plasma HDL-C was increased and LDL-C was decreased only in the GSTT1-present type, while blood glucose was decreased only in the GSTT1-null genotype. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the supplementation of kale juice affected blood pressure, lipid profiles, and blood glucose in subclinical hypertensive patients depending on their GST genetic polymorphisms, and the improvement of lipid profiles was mainly greater in the GSTT1-present genotype and the decrease of blood glucose was greater in the GSTM1-present or GSTT1-null genotypes.
To assess the effect of anaesthetic on stress response in cultured sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis) during transportation, the levels of plasma cortisol, glucose, lactic acid, $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Cl^-$, osmolality and survival were determined. The transportation was performed in square boxes where liquefied oxygen was saturated in polyethylene bags. Fish transportation was carried by car for 2 hours after anaesthesis with lidocaine-HCl/1,000 ppm $NaHCO_3$ in experiment. Mean plasma cortisol concentration before transportation was 170.7ng/ml. After transportation, the levels of plasma cortisol increased to 518.5ng/ml (Control), 461.9ng/ml (Sham control), 369.4ng/ml (20ppm anaesthetic), 304.0ng/ml (40 ppm anaesthetic), 405.7ng/ml (80 ppm anaesthetic) and 499.1ng/ml (160ppm anaesthetic) in each experimental groups, respectively (p<0.05). However levels of glucose, lactic acid, $Na^+,\;Cl^-$ and osmolality in 40ppm anaesthetic group did not show significant differences in this before and after transportation (P>0.05). These result reveal an anaesthetic lidocaine HCl/1,000ppm $NaHCO_3$ is effective as sedative for transportation mixture in this species. This research provides baseline data on cortisol, glucose, lactic acid, $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Cl^-$, osmolality and survival for anaesthetic transportation.
We investigated the effect of quercetin on growth and plasma cholesterol level and the effects of quercetin pretreatment (Diet 1, 0%; Diet 2, 0.25%; and Diet 3, 0.5% quercetin) for 30 and 60 days on oxidative stress induced by hypo-osmotic conditions (17.5, 8.75, and 4 psu) in olive flounder. The weights of flounder were higher with Diet 3 than with Diet 1 and 2, which indicated that a high concentration (Diet 3) of quercetin was very effective in growth. Total cholesterol levels were lower with Diets 2 and 3 than with Diet 1, leading us to hypothesize that quercetin removed low-density lipoproteins from circulation and thereby reduced total cholesterol. To understand the antioxidant role of quercetin, we measured the mRNA expression and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and the $H_2O_2$ concentration in quercetin-treated flounder exposed to osmotic stress. The $H_2O_2$ concentration and the SOD and CAT expression and activity levels were lower in flounder fed with Diets 2 and 3 than with Diet 1, suggesting that quercetin directly scavenges reactive oxygen species to reduce oxidative stress. Furthermore, the plasma lysozyme activity and osmolality were higher with Diets 2 and 3 than with Diet 1, indicating that quercetin increases immune function and helps to maintain physiological homeostasis. Plasma cortisol was lower with Diets 2 and 3 than with Diet 1, suggesting the quercetin protects against stress. These results indicate that quercetin has hypocholesterolemic and antioxidant effects, increases immune function, and acts to maintain physiological homeostasis.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Glutathione s-transferase (GST) is involved in the formation of a multigene family comprising phase II detoxification enzymes, involved in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species. This study evaluated whether daily supplementation with kale juice could modulate levels of plasma antioxidant vitamins and oxidative stress-related parameters. We further examined whether this modulation was affected by combined GSTM1 and T1 polymorphisms. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Totally, 84 subclinical hypertensive patients having systolic blood pressure (BP) over 130 mmHg or diastolic BP over 85 mmHg, received 300 mL of kale juice daily for 6 weeks. Blood samples were drawn before start of study and after completion of 6 weeks. RESULTS: After supplementation, we observed significant decrease in DNA damage and increase in erythrocyte catalase activity in all genotypes. Plasma level of vitamin C was significantly increased in the wild/null and double null genotypes. The plasma levels of ${\beta}-carotene$, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity, and nitric oxide were increased only in the wild/null genotype after kale juice supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: The effect of kale juice was significantly greater in the GSTM1 null genotype and wild/null genotype groups, suggesting possibility of personalized nutritional prescriptions based on personal genetics.
