  • Xanthan gum is a biopolymer produced by Xanthomonas campestris. In xanthan gum fermentation, the fermentation broth changes to highly viscous non-Newtonian fluid as xanthan gum concentration increases. Maximum xanthan gum concentration is limited by high viscosity of the broth since mass transfers of nutrient and oxygen are inhibited. Int this study the mass transfer effects were investigated in batch and fed-batch fermentations at various agitation speeds and by separate oxygen transfer experiments. Xanthan gum production rate was observed to be largely dependent on oxygen transfer coefficient; while cell growth rate was not affected highly by this factor.

  • The oxygen transfer rate is a parameter that characterizes the gas-liquid mass transfer in surface aerators. Gas-liquid transfer mechanisms in surface aeration tanks depend on two different extreme lengths of time; namely, macromixing and micromixing. Small scale mixing close to the molecular level is referred to as micromixing; whereas, macromixing refers to mixing on a large scale. Using experimental data and numerical simulations, macro- and micro-scale parameters describing the two extreme time scales were investigated. A scale up equation to simulate the oxygen transfer rate with micromixing times was developed in geometrically similar baffled surface aerators.

  • The objectives of this research are to evaluate and compare the oxygen transfer coefficients($K_{La}$) in both a general bubbles reactor and a micro-nano bubbles reactor for effective operation in sewage treatment plants, and to understand the effect on microbial kinetic parameters of biomass growth for optimal biological treatment in sewage treatment plants when the micro-nano bubbles reactor is applied. Oxygen transfer coefficients($K_{La}$) of tap water and effluent of primary clarifier were determined. The oxygen transfer coefficients of the tap water for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were found to be 0.28 $hr^{-1}$ and 2.50 $hr^{-1}$, respectively. The oxygen transfer coefficients of the effluent of the primary clarifier for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were found be to 0.15 $hr^{-1}$ and 0.91 $hr^{-1}$, respectively. In order to figure out kinetic parameters of biomass growth for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor, oxygen uptake rates(OURs) in the saturated effluent of the primary clarifier were measured with the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor. The OURs of in the saturated effluent of the primary clarifier with the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were 0.0294 mg $O_2/L{\cdot}hr$ and 0.0465 mg $O_2/L{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The higher micro-nano bubbles reactor's oxygen transfer coefficient increases the OURs. In addition, the maximum readily biodegradable substrate utilization rates($K_{ms}$) for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were 3.41 mg COD utilized/mg active VSS day and 7.07 mg COD utilized/mg active VSS day, respectively. The maximum specific biomass growth rates for heterotrophic biomass(${\mu}_{max}$) were calculated by both values of yield for heterotrophic biomass($Y_H$) and the maximum readily biodegradable substrate utilization rates($K_{ms}$). The values of ${\mu}_{max}$ for the general bubbles reactor and micro-nano bubbles reactor were 1.62 $day^{-1}$ and 3.36 $day^{-1}$, respectively. The reported results show that the micro-nano bubbles reactor increased air-liquid contact area. This method could remove dissolved organic matters and nutrients efficiently and effectively.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the flow and mass transfer characteristics of an orifice nozzle. Measurements of primary and suction flow rates, dissolved oxygen concentration, and electric power were obtained. Vertically injected mixed-jet images were captured by a direct visualization technique with a high speed camera unit. The mass ratio, volumetric mass transfer coefficient, and mass transfer performance were calculated using the measured data. As the primary flow pressure increases, the mass ratio decreases slightly, while the volumetric mass transfer coefficient and electric power increase. As the primary flow pressure increases and the mass ratio decreases, the mass transfer rate increases because of the fine bubbles and wider distribution of the bubbles.

  • This study investigated the feasibility of $CaSnO_3$ particles as an oxygen carrier in chemical looping combustion (CLC). $CaSnO_3$ particles had a perovskite crystal structure and showed the structural stability after repeated reduction-oxidation reactions. The oxygen transfer capacity was 15.4 wt% almost the same as the calculated theoretical value from the crystal structure transformation during reduction. After $10^{th}$ cycles of reduction and oxidation, the oxygen transfer capacity and rate were still maintained constantly at an operating temperature. In conclusion, $CaSnO_3$ particles could be a good alternative material as an oxygen carrier in CLC.

  • MgO or gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC, $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-{\delta}}$) was added as a promoter to improve the oxygen transfer kinetics of $MgMnO_3$ oxygen carrier material for chemical looping combustion. Neither MgO nor GDC reacted with $MgMnO_3$, even at the high temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$. The average oxygen transfer capacities of $MgMnO_3$, 5 wt% $MgO-MgMnO_3$, and 5 wt% $GDC-MgMnO_3$ were 8.74, 8.35, and 8.13 wt%, respectively. Although the addition of MgO or GDC decreased the oxygen transfer capacity, no further degradation was observed during their use in 5 redox cycles. The addition of GDC significantly improved the conversion rate for the reduction reaction of $MgMnO_3$ compared to the use of MgO due to an increase in the surface adsorption process of $CH_4$ via oxygen vacancies formed on the surface of GDC. On the other hand, the conversion rates for the oxidation reaction followed the order 5 wt% $GDC-MgMnO_3$ > 5 wt% $MgO-MgMnO_3$ >> $MgMnO_3$ due to morphological change. MgO or GDC particles suppressed the grain growth of the reduced $MgMnO_3$ (i.e., (Mg,Mn)O) and increased the specific surface area, thereby increasing the number of active reaction sites.

  • In this study, change in water-dissolved oxygen (DO) was analyzed under various synthetic water qualities and nanobubbles (NBs) application conditions, such as gas type, initial DO as well as water dissolved, suspended and organic matters contents. When oxygen, rather than air, was introduced into nitrogen-desorbed ultra-pure water, the stagnation time was significantly increased. It took ten days for DO concentration to drop back to saturation. The higher the initial DO concentration, the longer particles were observed above saturation due to particle stability improvement. The oxygen mass transfer rate of 0.0482 mg/L/min was found to reach a maximum at an electrolytic concentration of 0.75 g/L, beyond which the transfer rate decreased due to adsorption of negative ions of the electrolyte at the interface. High levels of turbidity caused by suspended solids have become a barrier to dissolution of NBs oxygen into the water solution, and thus affected the transfer performance. On the other hand, by applying NBs for just an hour, up to 7.2% degradation of glucose as representative organic matter was achieved. Thus, NBs technology would maintain a high DO extent for an extended duration, and thus can improve water quality provided that water chemistry is closely monitored during its application.

  • Sub-cooling of cryogenic propellant by helium injection is one of the most effective methods for suppressing bulk boiling and keeping sub-cooled liquid oxygen before rocket launch. In order to design the cooling system, understanding of the limitations of heat and mass transfer is required. In this paper, an analytical model for the helium injection system is presented. This model's main feature is the representation of bubbling system using finite-rate heat transfer and instantaneous mass transfer concept. With this simplified approach, the effect of helium injection to liquid oxygen system under several circumstances is examined. Experimental results along with simulations of single bubble rising in liquid oxygen and bubbling system are presented with various helium injection flow rates, and with change of oxygen chamber pressure.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of $CO_{2}$ on heat transfer from hydrogen oxygen-enriched flame. Experiments were performed on flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which mounted on top of the furnace. Five composition conditions of oxidizer were chosen with replacing $N_{2}$ with $CO_{2}$. In a steady state, total and radiative heat flux rates from the flame to the wall of furnace has been measured using heat flux meters. Temperature distribution in furnace also has been checked. Increasing $CO_{2}$ ratio in the oxidizer, the dominant heat transfer mode was changed into convection from radiation. Temperature in the furnace decreased but total heat flux increased.
