  • Of late, the development of advanced batteries with high power density and capacity has been indispensible for pushing ahead with much wider applications to electric vehicles and smart IT devices. However, a conventional Li-ion battery contains a limited energy density due to various technological challenges such that other types of Li batteries including Li-S and Li-air have been extensively studied due to their interestingly high energy capacities. Sulfur and oxygen, of which both are cathode materials, showing similar physicochemical characteristics have widely been available which may also contribute to the commercialization of these batteries. In this review, we introduce some perspectives in improving these advanced Li batteries through several approaches such as the provision of porous cathode structures, the optimization of cathode-electrolyte interfaces and the modification of Li anodes.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of L-carnitine on the pig semen characteristics during storage. Methods: Spermatozoa samples were examined for spermatozoa quality and then randomly divided into 5 groups: 0 (control), 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mM L-carnitine. Sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity and antioxidant parameters (total reactive oxygen species, total antioxidant capacity, and malondialdehyde) were evaluated after 0, 3, 5, and 10 day cooled-storage at 17℃. Moreover, ATP content, mitochondria activity as well as sperm-binding and in vitro fertilizing ability of preserved boar sperm were also investigated. Results: Supplementation with 50 mM L-carnitine could effectively maintain boar sperm quality parameters such as sperm motility and membrane integrity. Besides, we found that L-carnitine had positive effects on boar sperm quality mainly through improving antioxidant capacities and enhancing ATP content and mitochondria activity. Interestingly, by assessing the effect of L-carnitine on sperm fertility and developmental potential, we discovered that the extender containing L-carnitine could improve sperm quality and increase the number of sperms bounding to zona pellucida, without improving in vitro fertility and development potential. Conclusion: These findings suggested that the proper addition of L-carnitine to the semen extender improved boar sperm quality during liquid storage at 17℃.

  • The diapause of $Telegryllus$ $emma$, the Emma field cricket, was investigated to study the ecological characteristics of the species. Changes in the volume, oxygen consumption, and water content of T. emma eggs were followed from oviposition. An increase in volume, oxygen consumption and water uptake occurred from 7 to 8 days following oviposition. The oxygen consumption of the eggs increased slowly for 7 days following oviposition, but then decreased until 15 days following oviposition. These results showed that a physiological change at diapause initiation affected the volume, water content, and oxygen consumption of the $T.$ $emma$ eggs. An experimental investigation of egg hatching showed that the eggs could be stocked at $10^{\circ}C$ for 40 days with a 14 day pre-period after laying and yield, 62.1% hatchability under these conditions. Maintaining the temperature at approximately $10^{\circ}C$ was favorable for hatching. Another experiment on egg hatching showed that the storage of eggs at $10^{\circ}C$ from 40 to 180 days would ensure satisfactory, hatching capacity.

  • The interest in water gas shift (WGS) reaction has grown significantly, as a result of the recent advances in fuel cell technology and the need to develop small-scale fuel processors. Recently, researchers have tried to overcome the disadvantages of the commercial WGS catalysts. As a consequence, supported Pt catalysts have attracted a lot of researchers due to high activity and stability for WGS at low temperatures. In this study, $Pt-Na/Ce_{(1-x)}Zr_{(x)}O_2$ catalysts with various Ce/Zr ratio have been applied to WGS at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of $45,515h^{-1}$. According to TPR patterns of $Pt-Na/Ce_{(1-x)}Zr_{(x)}O_2$ catalysts, the reducibility increases with decreasing the $ZrO_2$ content. As a result, Cubic structure $Pt-Na/Ce_{(1-x)}Zr_{(x)}O_2$ catalysts exhibited higher CO conversion than tetragonal structure $Pt-Na/Ce_{(1-x)}Zr_{(x)}O_2$ catalysts. Expecially, Pt-Na/$CeO_2$ exhibited the highest CO conversion as well as 100% selectivity to $CO_2$. Moreover, Pt-Na/$CeO_2$ catalyst showed relatively stable activity with time on stream. The high activity of cubic structure Pt-Na/$CeO_2$ catalyst was correlated to its higher oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of $CeO_2$ and easier reducibility of Pt/$CeO_2$.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in clean hydrogen energy that does not emit carbon dioxide during combustion due to the increasing focus on carbon neutral. Research related to hydrogen production continues, and in this study, we applied waste-derived synthesis gas to the water-gas shift reaction to simultaneously treat waste and produce high-purity hydrogen. To enhance catalytic activity in the high-temperature water-gas shift (HT-WGS) reaction, magnesium was used as a support material alongside cerium. Cu-CeO2-MgO catalysts were synthesized, with copper acting as the active component for the HT-WGS reaction. A study on the catalytic activity based on the preparation method was conducted, and the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared by impregnation method exhibited the highest activity in the HT-WGS reaction. The observed superior performance of the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared through the impregnation method can be attributed to its significantly higher oxygen storage capacity and amount of active Cu species.

  • Recently $Li_{1.2}Ni_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}O_2$ has been consistently examined and investigated by scientists because of its high lithium storage capacity, which exceeds beyond the conventional theoretical capacity based on conventional chemical concepts. Consequently, $Li_{1.2}Ni_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}O_2$ is considered as one of the most promising cathode candidates for next generation in Li rechargeable batteries. Yet the mechanism and the origin of the overcapacity have not been clarified. Previously, many authors have demonstrated simultaneous oxygen evolution during the first delithiation. However, it may only explain the high capacity of the first charge process, and not of the subsequent cycles. In this work, we report a clarified interpretation of the structural evolution of $Li_{1.2}Ni_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}O_2$, which is the key element in understanding its anomalously high capacity. We identify how the structural evolution of $Li_{1.2}Ni_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}O_2$ occurs upon the electrochemical cycling through careful study of electrochemical profiles, ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), HR-TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and first principles calculation. Moreover, we successfully separated the structural change at subsequent cycles (mainly cation rearrangement) from the first charge process (mainly oxygen evolution with Li extraction) by intentionally synthesizing sample with large particle size. Consequently, the intermediate states of structural evolution could be well resolved. All observations made through various tools lead to the result that spinel-like cation arrangement and lithium environment are created and embedded in layered framework during repeated electrochemical cycling.

  • Storage temperature profoundly influences the storability of paprika (Capsicum annuum L.). However, the impact of storage temperature on storability and its association with the antioxidant activity of paprika are poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the storage attributes, activity, and gene expression levels of antioxidant enzymes in paprika stored at 4, 10, and 20℃ for 14 d and then at 20℃ for an additional 5 d (14+5 d; retail conditions). Storage at 10℃ effectively mitigated pitting, stalk browning, shriveling, and decay while significantly enhancing the marketability of paprika. The fruits stored at 4℃ were prone to pitting, whereas those stored at 20℃ were sensitive to stalk browning and decay. Moreover, paprika stored at 10℃ exhibited higher 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) activity and total phenolic content than those stored at 4 and 20℃, indicating improved antioxidant activity. Additionally, storage at 10℃ upregulated the expression levels of the antioxidant genes, catalase and peroxidase, suggesting the mechanism underlying the quality enhancement of paprika. Our findings suggest that paprika storage at 10℃ alleviates chilling injuries, preserves the quality and marketability, and enhances the antioxidant potential of paprika. These findings provide insights into how temperature influences the quality and minimizes post-harvest losses during the storage and distribution of paprika.

  • In relation to making tofu with red ginseng extract, the effects of added red ginseng extract on the storage and antioxidant activity of tofu were investigated. When red ginseng extract was added in $0.5%{\sim}2%$ of dried soybean, differences in texture, color and sensory properties were compared. The textural properties of tofu slightly increased depending on the added amount of red ginseng extract in terms of the hardness and springiness: significant difference was demonstrated in the tofu with 2% red ginseng extract, and the color properties also significantly increased in terms of the values of L, a, and b. As a result of sensory evaluation, although the preference to color tended to diminish, as the peculiar taste of red ginseng was significantly perceived, the overall preference did not show any statistical difference. Therefore, the addition of red ginseng extract may be interpreted as not having negative effect on the preference of consumers. There was no change at the early stage of storage in pH, turbidity and total microbial count when the tofu was stored at $15^{\circ}C$. However, the changes in pH and in turbidity, and total microbial counts according to the addition of red ginseng extract took place from the second day and from the sixth day of storage, respectively, suggesting that the shelf-life of tofu may be extended due to its antimicrobial effect. Especially, the highest antimicrobial effect was observed tofu with 2% red ginseng extract. Concerning the antioxidant activity of tofu using oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay, the antioxidant activity significantly increased along with the increase in concentration of red ginseng extract. In ORACOH.assay, the pro-oxidant activity was shown in the tofu added with red ginseng extract.
