  • Two types of cyanide sensor system were constructed for monitoring river water simply. One is membrane type flow system composed of S. cerevisiae coated membrane and oxygen electrode, the other is reactor type flow system composed of S. cevevisiae immobilized reactor and two oxygen electrode. S. cerevisiae and oxygen electrode were used for detecting cyanide compounds. These sensors are based on the inhibition of cyanides on the respiration activity of S. cerevisiae. Membrane type sensor system could detect cyanides ranging 0.10∼1.00ppm, and the respiration activity of S. cerevisiae continued for a day. Reactor type sensor system composed of immobilized chitopearl HP-5020 with S. cerevisiae could detect cyanides in the range of 0.10∼1.00ppm, and maintained 90% respiration activity for sixteen days. It was found that the optimum reactor size exist for the reactor type biosensor when respirating activity inhibition is used for detection of cyanides.

  • Potentiometric cell oxygen sensors using $CaF_{2}$ were fabricated for monitering the oxygen partial pressure in the low temperature range ($300^{\circ}C{\sim}$500^{\circ}C). The disk type oxygen sensors consist of a reference electrode: Air($O_{2}:21%$)|Pt, a solid electrolyte $CaF_{2}$, and a sensing metel Pt electrode. And the change in open circuit emf of the disk type cell was about 45mV for the oxygen concentration range, $0.1%{\sim}10%$, at the cell temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. Also, the reference electrode incorporated type sensor showed the change of 40mV for 0.1% to 10% oxygen partial pressure range.

  • This paper deals with the combustion characteristics of flue gas in infared mobile heaters. The experimental work has been performed to obtain the concentration levels and combustion characteristics of flue gas with varying chamber size and room temperature. The experimental results showed that oxygen depletion sensor device was operated at the oxygen concentration level of $18.3\%$ for all the chamber size. The combustion characteristics of oxygen and carbon dioxide show a linearity After 10 minutes the combustion property of carbon monoxide occurs at random without a level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in closed space of the heater. In these results, it is very important to prevent incomplete combustion through a sufficient ventilation, and accident prevention with a reduction of the oxygen and diffusion of toxic carbon monoxide.

  • In this study, an oxygen plasma treatment was used as a low temperature debinding method to form a conductive copper feature on a flexible substrate using a direct printing process. To demonstrate this concept, conductive copper patterns were formed on polyimide films using a copper nanoparticle-based paste with polymeric binders and dispersing agents and a screen printing method. Thermal and oxygen plasma treatments were utilized to remove the polymeric vehicle before a sintering of copper nanoparticles. The effect of the debinding methods on the phase, microstructure and electrical conductivity of the screen-printed patterns was systematically investigated by FE-SEM, TGA, XRD and four-point probe analysis. The patterns formed using oxygen plasma debinding showed the well-developed microstructure and the superior electrical conductivity compared with those of using thermal debinding.

  • The dissolved oxygen sensors with thick film type were fabricated for low cost products and the electrical properties were investigated in the different operating temperatures. Pt paste was used for working electrode and Ag/AgCl paste for reference electrode. The fabricated devices have fast response of current changes according to dissolved oxygen concentrations in the applied voltage of $0.6{\sim}0.8V$. This is expected to apply a chip and/or disposal dissolved oxygen sensors.

  • An electrochemical COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) sensor using an electrode-surface finding unit has been constructed. The electrolyzing(oxidizing) action of copper on the organic species was used as the basis of the COD measuring sensor. Using a simple three electrode cell, organic species which has been activated by the catalytic action of copper is oxidized at a working electrode, poised at a positive potential. A novel modification of the above method allowed for extended use of the electrode, in which the action of the electrode is regenerated by an electrode-surface grinding unit. When samples obtained from a wastewater treatment factory were measured, a linear correlation($r^2=0.93$) between the measured value(EOD) and $COD_{Mn}$ of the samples was observed. Overall results indicated that the electrochemical sensor with grinding unit could be applied for continuous measurements of COD in practical fields.

  • In this study, activated carbon fibers were treated with oxygen plasma to investigate gas sensing properties of the dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), which is a simulant gas of the chemical warfare agent, according to oxygen functional group contents. As the flow rate of oxygen plasma treatment increased, oxygen groups were introduced to the surface of activated carbon fibers from 6.90 up to 36.6%, increasing the -OH group which influences the DMMP gas sensing properties. However, as the flow rate of oxygen plasma increases, the specific surface area tends to decrease because etching on the surface of activated carbon fibers occurs due to active species generated during the oxygen plasma treatment. The resistance change rate of the DMMP gas sensor increased from 4.2 up to 25.1% as the oxygen plasma treatment flow rate increased. This is attributed to the hydrogen bonding between DMMP gas and introduced hydroxyl functional group on activated carbon fibers by the oxygen plasma treatment. Therefore, the oxygen plasma is considered to be one of the important surface treatment methods for detecting chemical warfare agents at room temperature.

  • We developed a glucose sensor using glucose dehydrogenase flavin adenine dinucleotide (GDH-FAD). The structure of the three-layer glucose sensor was simplified, in which a single-layer design was used to lower the unit cost, and GDH-FAD was used to increase the measurement reliability. GDH-FAD has less impact on the 20 interfering substances that affect blood glucose measurement, such as galactose and maltose compared to glucose oxidase (GOD), and is not affected by the oxygen saturation; therefore, it is possible to measure both arterial or venous blood and thus less susceptibility to hematocrit. In this study, we developed a single-layer glucose sensor strip with low hematocrit effect using the GDH-FAD enzyme, and measured and evaluated the performance.

  • A yeast loading biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor was designed and constructed to quickly measure the concentration of biologically assimilable organic substances dissolved in water as BOD values to feed back to the waste water treating processes. The sensitivity of the BOD sensor reached maximum at around pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$ where yeast showed the highest assimilation activity. Biomass also affected the sensor output, and biomass of $ 0.14\;mg/cm^2$ on the dialysis membrane appeared to be the optimum cell mass level. The sensitivity of the sensor depended on the kinds of pollutants and increased considerably when the yeast was preincubated in the solution of respective pollutants before loading on the sensor.
