Polyimide membrane system was designed for manufacturing nitrogen-enriched gas, and basic technical data was suggested for appling this system to controlled atmosphere storage. The permeability characteristics of pure oxygen and nitrogen could be explained by dual-mode sorption model. There was substantial decrease in the permeation rates of oxygen, which is the more permeable gas, through the polyimide membrane due to the presence of nitrogen in comparison with pure oxygen. However, the permeation rates of nitrogen was increased by the presence of oxygen. The ideal separation factor was in the range of 5 to 6 in the range of temperature and pressure difference studied, and the separation factor of air was lower than the ideal separation factor. The increase of ideal separation factor with increasing temperature is due to the fact that the activation energy for oxygen is larger than that for nitrogen. Nitrogen concentration decreased rapidly with increasing product recovery, and it was found that this is a major operating factor to obtain nitrogen concentration required for controlled atmosphere storage. A relation equation, by which nitrogen concentration in storehouse can be predicted, was suggested under the establishment of a hypothetical model for controlled atmosphere storage process using polyimide membrane system.
Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) containing [N, N'-bis (3- (salicylidene amino) propyl) amine Co(II)] (Co(saldpt)) as a fixed oxygen carrier was synthesized. UV-visible spectra of the membrane demonstrated that Co(saldpt) binded molecular oxygen specificaaly and reversibly. From time lag method experiment, it was found that both oxygen permeability and diffusibity increase with decreasing upstream pressure, while solubility maintain nearly constant. The maximum oxygen permeability and oxygen selectivity over nitrogen obtained was 18.6 barrer and 4, respectively, at 25 mmHg and $40^{\circ}C$ from the the PDMS membrane containing 1 wt% of Co(saldpt). Facilitation behavior was explained in terms of the dual sorption model.
The valiclity of the simple mathematical model for facilitated transport in a solid state membrane developed previously has been examined againsts the carrier concentration and membrane thick-ness. Membranes are prepared with copolymer of styrene and 4-vinylpyridine as a matrix and Co(salen) as a carrier. 4-Vinylpyridine is incorporated to provide the coordination site for Co(salen) carrier. Oxygen permeability through the facilitated transport membrane is linearly increased with the square of its thick-ness, as predicted by the mathematical model. However, the oxygen permeability does not increase linearly with the carrier concentration. This seems to be due to the deactivation of the carrier by dimerization at high carrier concentrations as well as the reduced chain mobility by coordination of bulky Co(salen) carrier.
An optical sensing membrane has been fabricated to measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen(DO) and pH value simultaneously. It has employed HPTS as a pH sensitive dye and a ruthenium(II) complex as a DO sensitive dye. The sensing membrane has been applied to wells in a 24-well microtiter plate. Using the 24-well microtiter plate the concentrations of dissolved oxygen and pH values have been on-line monitored during the cultivations of E.coli DH5${\alpha}$, B.cereus 318 and P.pastoris X-33. On-line monitoring of DO and pH in microorganism cultivation processes showed good performance of the sensing membrane containing 5 mM HPTS and 2 or 5 mg/mL Rudpp.
This paper deals with the influence of chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen ratio ((COD/N) ratio) on the performance of an membrane bioreactor. We aim at establishing relations between COD/N ratio, organisms' distribution and sludge properties (specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and membrane fouling). It is also essential to define new criteria to characterize the autotrophic microorganisms, as the measurements of apparent removal rates of ammonium seem irrelevant to characterize their specific activity. Two experiments (A and B) have been carried on a 30 L lab scale membrane bioreactor with low COD/N ratio (2.3 and 1.5). The obtained results clearly indicate the role of the COD/N ratio on the biomass distribution and performance of the membrane bioreactor. New specific criteria for characterising the autotrophic microorganisms activity, is also defined as the ratio of maximum ammonium rate to the specific oxygen uptake rate in the endogenous state for autotrophic bacteria which seem to be constant whatever the operating conditions are. They are about 24.5 to 23.8 $gN-NH_4{^+}/gO_2$, for run A and B, respectively. Moreover, the filterability of the biological suspension appear significantly lower, specific resistance to filtration and membrane fouling rate are less than $10^{14}m^{-2}$ and $0.07\;10^{12}m^{-1}.d^{-1}$ respectively, than in conventional MBR confirming the adv < antage of the membrane bioreactor functioning under low COD/N ratio.
$YBaCo_2O_{5+{\delta}}$ oxide was synthesized by solid state reaction and a typical dense membrane has been prepared using as-prepared powder by unilateral pressing and sintering at $1,180^{\circ}C$. The $YBaCo_2O_{5+{\delta}}$ membraneswas analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). XRD analysis showed the double layered perovskite structure was observed over $1,150^{\circ}C$ without impurities. Oxygen permeation was measured in the temperature range from 750 to $950^{\circ}C$ according to oxygen partial pressure difference between feed and permeation side. The oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing temperature and oxygen partial pressure and the maximum oxygen flux of $YBaCo_2O_{5+{\delta}}$ membrane with 1.0 mm thickness was about 0.15 mL/$cm^2{\cdot}min$ at $950^{\circ}C$ and $PO_2$ = 0.42 atm. The activation energy for oxygen permeation decreased with decreasing oxygen partial pressure to be 76.0 kJ/mol at the condition of $PO_2$ = 0.21 atm.
The effects of pH and oxygen back-flushing were investigated in hybrid process of ceramic microfiltration and PES (polyethersulfone) beads loaded with titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photocatalyst for advanced drinking water treatment in viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J), and total permeate volume ($V_T$). As increasing pH, $R_f$ decreased and J increased. Finally the maximum $V_T$ could be acquired at pH 9. Treatment efficiencies of turbidity was almost same independent of pH. Treatment efficiency of dissolved organic matters (DOM) decreased as increasing pH. As results of comparing the oxygen and nitrogen back-flushing, $R_{f,180}$ at oxygen back-flushing was the lower than that at nitrogen back-flushing, and the dimensionless final permeate flux ($J_{180}/J_0$) by initial permeate flux ($J_0$) at oxygen back-flushing was maintained the higher than that at nitrogen back-flushing except 10 and 12 min of back-flushing period (FT). Treatment efficiency of turbidity at oxygen back-flushing was a little higher than that at nitrogen back-flushing. Treatment efficiency of the DOM at nitrogen back-flushing was the higher than that at oxygen back-flushing. Also, treatment efficiency of turbidity at saturated oxygen was similar with those of oxygen and nitrogen back-flushing, but the treatment efficiency of DOM was increased significantly because OH radical could be generated by reaction between saturated oxygen and photocatalyst.
The BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) sensor was fabricated by covering a dissolved oxygen (DO) probe with a microbe-impregnated membrane and a dialysis membrane. Various microorganisms isolated from the soils, water and activated sludge have been evaluated for measuring biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); Bacillus species HN24 and HN93 were selected as they exhibited rapid oxygen consumption and fast recovery. Improved BOD sensor could be prepared by using mixed microbes (Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus sp. HN24 and Bacillus sp. NH93) and silicon rubber gas-permeable membrane for DO probe, and by bubbling 50% $O_2$ ($N_2$ valence) through background buffer solution. This system exhibited excellent analytical performance resulting in good linearity ($r^2=0.9986$) from 0 to 100 mg/L level of BOD.
A nonporous hollow fiber membrane contactor was used to control the concentration of oxygen dissolved in an aqueous solution, which was predicted along the hollow fiber membrane using a computer simulation. The governing ordinary differential equations were derived for the occurrent flows of the feed aqueous solution and the feed gas mixture in a membrane contactor and they were numerically solved using the 5th Runge-Kutta-Verner method with a personal computer, where the program was coded utilizing a software of the Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6. It is found that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in water increases from 30 to 64 ppm as the length of the hollow fiber increases from 0.4 to 1.2 m when the membrane of fibers are equal to be 16,000; the flow rate of the feed gas is kept to be 0.536 mol/sec; its pressure is maintained to be 486 kPa; the flow rate of the water is 16.69 mol/sec. As the flow rate of the water increases from 9.26 to 26.85 mol/sec, the concentration of oxygen decreases from 40 to 20 ppm with the constant fiber length of 0.4 m. Finally, it is observed that the concentration of oxygen increases from 33 to 69 ppm as the pressure of the feed gas increases from 298 to 847 kPa.
The gas separation performance of a mixed membrane structure based on a mixture of polyethersulfone (PES) and cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin-benzylimidazole (CoTpp-BIm) as an oxygen carrier was investigated. The CoTpp-BIm mixed PES membrane had an asymmetric structure with a mixture of finger structure and sponge-like structure, and the upper surface was dense. The gas separation performance test was carried out using $94%\;N_2$ gas and $6%\;O_2$ mixed gas. Oxygen and nitrogen permeability coefficients were measured at ${\Delta}P$ ranging from 15 to 228 cmHg and the permeate side of the PES membrane was maintained at vacuum level. The oxygen permeability coefficient of CoTpp-BIm mixed PES membranes increased as supplied pressure was decreased. When the supply pressure was 15 cmHg, the gas permeability ($P_{O_2}$) was 6676 Barrer, the $O_2/N_2$ selectivity (${\alpha}$) was 6.1, and the promoting factor (F) was 2.39. Based on these results, it was confirmed that the addition of CoTpp-BIm to the PES film improved the oxygen separation characteristics.
