Various inorganic fillers improve the thermal conductivity and physical properties of organic products. Alumina has been used a representative filler in the heat radiation sheet for the heat radiation of electric device. The high filling rate of alumina increases the thermal conductivity and properties of products. We successfully developed the spherical alumina by flame fusion process using the oxygen burner with LPG fuel. In the high temperature flame (2500$\sim$3000$^{\circ}C$) of oxygen burner, sprayed powders were melting and then rotated by carrier gas. This surface melting and rotation process made spherical alumina. Especially effects of chemical composition and particle size of stating materials on the melting behavior of starting materials in the flame and spheroidization ratio were investigated. As a result, spheroidization ratio of boehmite and aluminum hydroxide with endothermic reaction of dehydration process was lower than that of the sintered alumina without dehydration reaction.
Basic design of 3 MWth chemical looping combustion system for LNG combustion and steam generation was conducted based on the mass and energy balance and the previous reactivity test results of oxygen carrier particles. Process configuration including fast fluidized bed (air reactor), loop seal and bubbling fluidized bed (fuel reactor) was confirmed and their dimensions were determined by mass balance. Then, the external fluidized bed heat exchanger (FBHE) was adopted based on the energy balance to extract heat from the system. The optimum reactor design and operating condition was confirmed with sensitivity analysis by modifying system configuration based on the mass and energy balance.
For gaseous fuel combustion with inherent $CO_2$ capture and low NOx emission, chemical-looping combustion(CLC) may yield great advantages of savings of energy to $CO_2$ separation and suppressing the effect on environment. In chemical-looping combustor, fuel is oxidized by metal oxide medium (oxygen carrier particle) in a reduction reactor. Reduced particles are transported to oxidation reactor and oxidized by air and recycled to reduction reactor. The fuel and the air are never mixed, and the gases from reduction reactor, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$, leave the system as separate stream. The $H_2O$ can be easily separated by condensation and pure $CO_2$ is obtained without any loss of energy for separation. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate inherent $CO_2$ separation and no NOx emission and to confirm high $CO_2$ selectivity, no side reaction (i.e., carbon deposition, hydrogen generation) by continuous reduction and oxidation experiment in a 50kWtb chemical-looping combustor. NiO/bentonite particle was used as a bed material and $CH_4$ and air were used as reacting gases for reduction and oxidation respectively.
Chemical compositions of monodisperse $SiO_2/TiO_2$ multicomponent aggregates were measured for different heights from the burner surface and different mobility diameters of aggregates. $SiO_2/TiO_2$ multicomponent particles were generated in a hydrogen/oxygen coflow diffusion flame from two sets of precursors: TTIP (titanium tetraisopropoxide), TEOS(tetraethylorthosilicate). To maintain 1:1 mole ratio of TTIP:TEOS vapor theoretically, flow rate of carrier gas $N_2$ was fixed at 0.61pm for TTIP, at 0.11pm for TEOS. In situ sampling probe was used to supply particles into differential mobility analyzer(DMA) which was calibrated with using commercial DMA(TSI 3071A) and classifying monodisperse multicomponent particles. Classified particles were collected with electrophoretic collector. The distributions of composition from particle to particle were determined using EDS (energy dispersive spectrometry) coupled with TEM (transmission electron microscope). The chemical (atomic) compositions of classified monodisperse particle were obtained for different heights; z=40mm, 60mm, 80mm. The results suggested that the atomic composition of $SiO_2$ decreased with the height from burner surface and the composition of $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ approached to the value of 1 to 1 in far downstream. It is also found that the composition of $SiO_2$ decreases as the mobility diameter of aggregate increases.
Chemical compositions of polydisperse SiO$_2$/TiO$_2$multicomponent aggregates were measured for different heights from the burner surface and different mobility diameters of aggregates. SiO$_2$/TiO$_2$multicomponent particles were generated in a hydrogen/oxygen coflow diffusion flame from two sets of precursors: TTIP(titanium tetraisopropoxide), TEOS(tetraethylorthosilicate). To maintain 1:1 mole ratio of TTIP:TEOS vapor, flow rate of carrier gas $N_2$was fixed at 0.6lpm for TTIP, at 0.1lpm for TEOS. In-situ sampling probe was used to supply particles into DMA(differential mobility analyzer) which was calibrated with using commercial DMA(TSI, model 3071A) and classifying monodisperse multicomponent particles. Classified monodisperse particles were collected with electrophoretic collector. The distributions of composition from particles to particle were determined using EDS(energy dispersive spectrometry) coupled with TEM(transmission electron microscope). The chemical(atomic) compositions of classified monodisperse particle were obtained for different heights; z=40mm, 60mm, 80mm. The results suggested that the chemical(atomic) composition of SiO$_2$decreased with the height from burner surface and the composition of SiO$_2$and TiO$_2$approached to the value of 1 to 1 fat downstream. It is also found that the composition of SiO$_2$decreases as the mobility diameter of aggregate increases.
N-type porous silicon (PS) layers and thermally oxidized PS layers have been characterized by various measuring techniques such as photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, IR, HRSEM and transmittance measurements. The top surface of PS layer shows a stronger photoluminescence peak than its bottom part, and this is ascribed to the difference in number of fine silicon particles of 2~3 nm in diameter. Observed characteristics of PL spectra are explained in terms of microstructures in the n-type PS layers. Common features for both p-type and n-type PS layers are as follows: the parts which can emit visible photoluminescence are not amorphous, but crystalline, and such parts are composed of nanocrystallites of several nm's whose orientations are slightly different from Si substrate, and such fine silicon particles absorb much hydrogen atoms near the surfaces. Light emission is strongly dependent on such fine silicon particles. Photoluminescence is due to charge carrier confinement in such three dimensional structure (sponge-like structure). Characteristics of visible light emission from n-type PS can be explained in terms of modification of band structure accompanied by bandgap widening and localized levels in bandstructure. It is also shown that hydrogen and oxygen atoms existing on residual silicon parts play an important role on emission stability.
Effects of operating variables on temperature profile and performance of 3 MWth chemical looping combustion system were estimated by mass and energy balance analysis based on configuration and dimension of the system determined by design tool. Air reactor gas velocity, fuel reactor gas velocity, solid circulation rate, and solid input percentage to fluidized bed heat exchanger were considered as representative operating variables. Overall heat output and oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas from the air reactor increased but temperature difference decreased as air reactor gas velocity increased. Overall heat output, required solid circulation rate, and temperature difference increased as fuel reactor gas velocity increased. However, overall heat output and temperature difference decreased as solid circulation rate increased. Temperature difference decreased as solid circulation rate through the fluidized bed heat exchanger increased. Effect of each variables on temperature profile and performance can be determined and these results will be helpful to determine operating range of each variable.
