  • The aim of this study is to investigate the parametric characteristics on regenerative system with oxy-fuel combustion by experiment. Regenerative system with a pair of oxygen burners and regenerators is used for evaluating regenerator characteristics according to design parameters such as ball (regenerator medium) size, regenerator weight, and bypass of exhaust gas. The temperature profiles with time are varied by ball size and regenerator weight. The bypass of exhaust gas shows that the heat recovery ratio increases while the regenerating temperature efficiency slightly decreases.

  • The application of an oxy-combustion circulating fluidized bed combustor (Oxy-CFBC) for low grade coals has recently developed in the world to meet the continuous increase of energy demand and to achieve the reduction of greenhouse gases. Since demo plants for Oxy-CFBC have been developed, the combustion properties of Oxy-CFBC in various operation conditions, such as gas flow rates, combustion temperature, fuel, and so on, should be investigated to develop design criteria for a commercial Oxy-CFBC. In this study, a computational simulation tool for Oxy-CFBC was developed on the basis of the IEA-CFBC (International Energy Agency Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor) model. Simulation was performed under various conditions such as reaction temperature ($800^{\circ}C{\sim}900^{\circ}C$), oxygen contents (21%~41%), coal feeding rate, Ca/S mole ratio (1.5~4.0), and so on. Simulation results show that the combustion furnace temperature is higher in oxy 1 than air fired. However, the temperature gradient tended to decrease with increasing oxy mixing percent. In case of $SO_x$, the higher the Ca/S mole ratio and oxy mixing percent, the higher the desulfurization efficiency.

  • Oxy-combustion with a circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFBC) technology has been paid attention to cope with the climate change and fuel supply problem. In addition, Oxy-CFBC technology as one of the methods for carbon dioxide capture is an eco-friendly that can reduce air pollutants, such as $SO_2$, NO and CO through a flue gas recirculation process. The newly developed $100kW_{th}$ pilot-scale Oxy-CFBC system used for this research has been continuously utilizing to investigate oxy-combustion characteristics for various fuels, coals and biomasses to verify the possibility of fuel diversification. The anthracite is known as a low reactivity fuel due to a lot of fixed carbon and ash. Therefore, this study aims not only to improve combustion efficiency of an anthracite, but also to capture carbon dioxide. As a result, compared to air-combustion of sub-bituminous coal, oxy-combustion of anthracite could improve 2% combustion efficiency and emissions of $SO_2$, CO and NO were reduced 15%, 60% and 99%, respectively. In addition, stable operating of Oxy-CFBC could capture above 94 vol.% $CO_2$.

  • Future power plants will be required to adopt some type of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to reduce their CO2 emissions. One of distinguished CCS techniques expected to resolve the green house effect is to apply the oxy-fuel combustion technique to power plant, and a lot of research/demonstration programs have been going on in the world. In this paper, CO2-capturing power plants based on gas turbine and oxy-fuel combustion are investigated over several types of configurations. As a prior step, simulation model for 500 MW-class combined cycle power plant was set and was used as a reference case. The efficiencies of several power plants was compared and the advantages and disadvanteges was investigated.

  • Numerical study is conducted to grasp the flame structure and NO emissions for a wide range of oxy-fuel combustion (covering from air blown combustion to pure oxygen combustion) and for various mole fractions of recirculated $CO_2$ in $CH4-O_2/N_2/CO_2$ counterflow diffusion flames. Special concern is given to the difference of the flame structure and NO emissions between air blown combustion and oxy-fuel combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$ and is also focused on chemical effects of recirculated $CO_2$. Air blown combustion and oxy-fuel combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$ are shown to be considerably different in the flame structure and NO emissions. Modified fuel oxidation reaction pathways in oxygen-enriched combustion are provided in detail compared to those in air blown combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$. The formation and destruction of NO through Fenimore and thermal mechanisms are also compared for air blown combustion and oxyegn-enriched combustion w/o recirculated $CO_2$, and the role of the recirculated $CO_2$ and its chemical effects are discussed. Importantly contributing reaction steps to the formation and destruction of NO are also estimated in oxygen-enriched combustion in comparison to air blown combustion.

  • An oxy-fuel boiler has been developed to capture $CO_2$ from the exhaust gas. FGR (flue gas recirculation) is adopted to be compliant with the retrofit scenario. Numerical simulations have been performed to study the detailed physics inside the combustion chamber of the boiler. The temperature field obtained from the simulation agrees with the flame image from the experiment. The FGR combustion yields similar heat transfer characteristics with the conventional air combustion while the flame is formed further downstream in case of the FGR combustion.

  • Although the formation of oxy-fuel MILD combustion is considered one of the promising combustion technologies for high thermal efficiency, low emissions and stability have been reported as difficulties. In this paper, the effect of combustor geometry and operating conditions on the formation of oxy-fuel MILD combustion was analyzed using numerical simulation. The results show that the high temperature region and average temperature decreased due to an increase in oxygen inlet velocity; moreover, a high degree of temperature uniformity was achieved using an optimized combination of fuels and an oxygen injection configuration without external oxygen preheating. In particular, the oxy-fuel MILD combustion flame was found to be very stable with a combustion flame region at equivalence ratio 0.90, fuel velocity 10 m/s, oxygen velocity 200 m/s, and nozzle distance 33.5 mm.

  • The characteristics of nonpremixed oxy-fuel flame in a multi-jet burner were experimentally and numerically investigated. The overall flow rate of fuel and oxygen was fixed, and the oxygen feeding ratio (OFR) was varied by 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75. The results of numerical simulation were compared with the measured results which are temperature profile and direct flame observation. The probability density function (PDF) model was applied accounting to the description between turbulence and chemistry, and standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was used for turbulent flow field. Equilibrium assumption is very reasonable due to fast chemistry of the oxy-fuel combustion. Thus, the equilibrium calculation based on Gibbs free energy minimization was guaranteed to generate the solution of the oxy-fuel combustion. The result was obtained by numerical simulation. The predicted radial temperature profiles were in good agreement with the measured results. The flame length was shorten and was intensified with the decrease of OFR because the mixture of fuel and oxidizer are fast mixed and burnt. The maximum temperature became lower as the OFR increased, as a consequence of large flame surface area.

  • The oxy-fuel combustion is $CO_2$ capture technology that uses mixture of pure $O_2$ and recirculated exhaust as oxidizer. Currently some Oxy-fuel power plants demonstration project is underway in worldwide. Meanwhile research project for converting 125 MWe Young-Dong power plant to 100 MWe oxy-fuel power plants is progress. In this paper, 1 D process analytical approach was applied for conducting process design and operating parameters sensitivity analysis for oxy-fuel combustion of Young-Dong power plant. As a result, appropriate gas recirculation rates was 74.3% that in order to maintain normal rating superheater, reheater steam temperature and boiler heat transfer patterns. And boiler efficiency 85.0%, CPU inlet $CO_2$ mole concentration 71.34% was predicted for retrofitted boiler. The oxygen concentration in the secondary recycle gas is predicted as 27.1%. Meanwhile the oxygen concentration 22.4% and moisture concentration 5.3% predicted for primary recycle gas. As the primary and secondary gas recirculation increases, then heat absorption of the reheater is tends to increases whereas superheater side is decreased, and also the efficiency is tends to decrease, according to results of sensitivity analysis for operating parameters. In addition, the ambient air ingression have a tendency to lead to decline of efficiency for boiler as well as decline of $CO_2$ purity of CPU inlet.
