  • ADP-rubosylation may be involved in the process of macrophage activation. Nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as an important intracellular and interacellular regulatory molecule with function as diverse as vasodilation, neural communication or host defense. NO is derived from the oxidation of the terminal guanidino nitrogen atom of L-arginine by the NADPH -dependent enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) which is one of the three different isomers in mammalian tissues. Since NO can exert protective or regulatory functions in the cell at a low concentration while toxic effects at higher concentrations, its role may be tightly regulated in the cell. Therefore, this paper was focused on signal transduction pathway of NO synthesis, role of endogenous TGF-$\beta$ in NO production. effect of NO on superoxide formation. Costimulation of murine peritoneal macrophages with interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) increased both NO secretion and mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) when PMA abolished costimulation. Pretreatmnet of the cells with PMA abolished costimuation effects due to the depletion of protein kinase C (PKC) activities . The involvement of PKC in NO secretion could be further confirmed by PKC inhibitor, stauroprine, and phorbol ester derivative, phorbol 12,13-didecanoate. Addition of actinomycine D in IFN-γ plus PMA stimulated cells inhibited both NO secretion and mRNA expression of iNOS indication that PMA stabilizes mRNA of iNOS . Exogenous TGF-$\beta$ reduced NO secretion in IFN -γ stimulated murine macrophages. However addition of antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) to TGF-$\beta$ to this system recovered the ability of NO production and inhibited mRNA expression of TGF-$\beta$. ACAS interactive laser cytometry analysis showed that transportation of FITC -labeled antisense ODN complementary to TGF-$\beta$ mRNA could be observed within 5 min and reached maximal intensity in 30 min in the murine macrophage cells. NO released by activated macrophages inhibits superoxide formation in the same cells . This inhibition nay be related on NO-induced auto -adenosine diphosphate (ADP) -ribosylation . In addition, ADP-ribosylation may be involved in the process of macrophage activation .

  • Transparent oxide semiconductors have recently attracted much attention as channel layer materials due to advantageous electrical and optical characteristics such as high mobility, high stability, and good transparency. In addition, transparent oxide semiconductor can be fabricated at low temperature with a low production cost and it permits highly uniform devices such as large area displays. A variety of thin film transistors (TFTs) have been studied including ZnO, InZnO, and InGaZnO as the channel layer. Recently, there are many studies for substitution of Ga in InGaZnO TFTs due to their problem, such as stability of devices. In this work, new quaternary compound materials, tantalum-indium-tin oxide (TaInSnO) thin films were fabricated by using co-sputtering and used for the active channel layer in thin film transistors (TFTs). We deposited TaInSnO films in a mixed gas (O2+Ar) atmosphere by co-sputtering from Ta and ITO targets, respectively. The electric characteristics of TaInSnO TFTs and thin films were investigated according to the RF power applied to the $Ta_2O_5$ target. The addition of Ta elements could suppress the formation of oxygen vacancies because of the stronger oxidation tendency of Ta relative to that of In or Sn. Therefore the free carrier density decreased with increasing RF power of $Ta_2O_5$ in TaInSnO thin film. The optimized characteristics of TaInSnO TFT showed an on/off current ratio of $1.4{\times}108$, a threshold voltage of 2.91 V, a field-effect mobility of 2.37 cm2/Vs, and a subthreshold swing of 0.48 V/dec.

  • The change in the oxidation behavior of three types of B-added ultrahigh strength martensitic steels containing Ti and Nb induced by applying constant cathodic current was investigated. In a 3% NaCl+0.3% $NH_4SCN$ solution, the overall polarization behavior of the three alloys was similar, and degradation of the oxide film was observed in the three alloys after applying constant cathodic current. A significant increase in the anodic current density was observed in the Nb-added alloy, while it was diminished in the Ti-added alloy. Both Ti and Nb alloying decreased the hydrogen overpotential by forming NbC and TiC particles. In addition, the thickest oxide film was formed on the Ti-added alloy, but the addition of Nb decreased the film thickness. Therefore, it was concluded that the remarkable increase in the anodic current density of Nb-added alloy induced by applying constant cathodic current density was attributed to the formation of the thinnest oxide film less protective to hydrogen absorption, and the addition of Ti effectively blocked the hydrogen absorption by forming TiC particles and a relatively thick oxide film.

  • Hydrogen energy applications have recognized clean materials and high energy carrier. Accordingly, Hydrogen energy applies for fuel cell by Mg and Mg-based materials. Mg and Mg-based materials are lightweight and low cost materials with high hydrogen storage capacity. However, commercial applications of the Mg hydride are currently hinder by its high absorption/desorption temperature, and very slow reaction kinetics. Therefore one of the most methods to improve kinetics focused on addition transition metal oxide. Addition to transition metal oxide in $MgH_x$ powder produce $MgH_x$-metal oxide composition by mechanical alloy and it analyze XRD, EDS, TG/DSC, SEM, and PCT. This report considers kinetics by transition metal oxide rate and Hydrogen pressure. In this research, we can see behavior of hydriding/dehydriding profiles by addition catalyst (transition metal oxide). Results of PCI make a excellent showing $MgH_x$-5wt.% Sc2O3 at 623K, $MgH_x$-10wt.% $Sc_2O_3$ at 573K.

  • The present study was conducted to determine the effects of chitosan on nitric oxide (NO) content and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activity in serum, and relative expression of iNOS mRNA in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of broiler chickens. A total of 240 one-day-old Arbor Acre mixed-sex broiler chickens were randomly allotted to six dietary treatments with five replicates in each treatment and eight chickens in each replicate. The broiler chickens in the six treatments were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 g/kg chitosan. The trial lasted for 42 days. The results showed that dietary chitosan enhanced NO content and iNOS activity in serum as well as iNOS mRNA expression in the duodenum and ileum of broiler chickens in a quadratic dose-dependent manner (p<0.05), and improved jejunum iNOS mRNA expression in a quadratic dose-dependent manner (p<0.10) with increasing addition of chitosan. Chicks fed a diet containing 0.5-1.0 g/kg chitosan had higher NO content and iNOS activity in serum as well as small-intestinal iNOS mRNA expression compared with birds given the control diet, but positive effects of chitosan tended to be suppressed when addition of chitosan in the diet was increased to 2.0 g/kg. These results implied that there was a threshold level of chitosan inclusion beyond which progressive reductions in serum NO content and small intestinal iNOS expression occured, and the regulation of chitosan on immune functions in chickens is probably associated with activated expression of iNOS and NO secretion.

  • In this study, we have carried out measurement for exhaust emissions such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide from main engines installed on the training ships, HANBADA and HANNARA, of Korea Maritime University. In particular, we considered the two conditions; at arrivals/departures and at constant speed of about 160 rpm. The result showed that the concentration of PM at the ship arrival was 2.41mg/m3. On the other hand, when the ship is on the navigation condition, the concentration of PM was 1.34 mg/m3. The concentrations of nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide were measured in the range of 1,120~1,600 ppm and 320~1,450 ppm at the arrival and departure at the port. Under constant speed condition, the concentrations of nitrogen oxide and carbon oxide were 913~1,470 ppm and 73~460 ppm, respectively. Generally, the concentrations of exhaust emissions under the arrivals and departures were higher than that of constant speed condition. These results imply that the ship operation skill to prevent a sudden load change of main engine is needed during the arrival or departure. In addition, it means that the difference of exhaust emissions according to navigation conditions has to be considered when the reduction technologies of air pollutants from ships are developed.

  • Acid food indicators can be used as pH indicators for evaluating the quality and freshness of fermented products during the full course of distribution. Iron oxide particles are hardly suspended in water, but partially or completely agglomerated. The agglomeration degree of the iron oxide particles depends on the pH. The pH-dependent particle agglomeration or dispersion can be useful for monitoring the acidity of food. The zeta potential of iron oxide showed a decreasing trend as the pH increased from 2 to 8, while the point of zero charge (PZC) was observed around at pH 6.0-7.0. These results suggested that the size of the iron oxide particles was affected by the change in pH levels. As a result, the particle sizes of iron oxide were smaller at lower pH than at neutral pH. In addition, agglomeration of the iron oxide particles increased as the pH increased from 2 to 7. In the time-dependent aggregation test, the average particle size was 730.4 nm and 1,340.3 nm at pH 2 and 7, respectively. These properties of iron oxide particles can be used to develop an ideal acid indicator for food pH and to monitor food quality, besides a colorant or nutrient for nutrition enhancement and sensory promotion in food industry.

  • Titanium is applied in various industries due to its valuable properties and abundant reserves. Generally, if a highly uniform oxide structure and a high-density oxide film is formed on the surface through anodization treatment, the utility value such as color appearance and corrosion inhibition efficiency is further increased. The objective of this study was to determine improvement of water-repellent property by controlling titanium oxide parameters such as pore size and inter-pore distance to improve corrosion resistance. Oxide film structures of different shapes were prepared by controlling the anodization processing time and voltage. These oxide structures were then analyzed using a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). Afterwards, a Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM) coating was performed for the oxide structure. The contact angle was measured to determine the relationship between the shape of the oxide film and the water-repellency. The smaller the solid fraction of the surface, the higher the water-repellent effect. The surface with excellent hydrophobic properties showed improved corrosion resistance. Such water-repellent surface has various applications. It is not only useful for corrosion prevention, but also useful for self-cleaning. In addition, a hydrophobic titanium may open up a new world of biomaterials to remove bacteria from the surface.

  • Zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(NO3)2·6H2O) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were dissolved in distilled water and stirred for 30 min. The resulting solution was sonicated by an ultrasonic wave for 45 min. This solution was washed with distilled water and ethanol after centrifugation; next, it was placed in an electric furnace at 200℃ for 1 h under the flow of Ar gas to obtain zinc oxide nanoparticle. A zinc oxide nanoparticle-(C60) fullerene nanowhisker composite was synthesized using the zinc oxide nanoparticle solution, C60-saturated toluene, and isopropyl alcohol via the liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation method. The zinc oxide nanoparticle and zinc oxide nanoparticle-(C60) fullerene nanowhisker composite were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, and they were used for the catalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) under ultraviolet (at 254 and 365 nm) and ultrasonic irradiation. In addition, the catalytic degradation of MO over the zinc oxide nanoparticle and zinc oxide nanoparticle-(C60) fullerene nanowhisker composite was evaluated using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy.

  • In the present work, copper oxide thin films were formed by heat-treatment method with different temperatures and atmosphere, e.g., at 200 ~ 400 ℃; in air and Ar atmosphere. The morphological, electrical and optical properties of the thermally fabricated Cu oxide films were analyzed by SEM, XRD, and UV-VIS spectrometer. Thereafter, photoelectrochemical properties of the thermal copper oxide films were analyzed under solar light (AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2). Conclusively, the highest photocurrent was obtained with Cu2O formed under the optimum annealing condition at 300 ℃ in air atmosphere. In addition, EIS results of Cu oxide formed in air atmosphere showed relatively low resistance and long electron life-time compared with Cu Oxide fabricated in Ar atmosphere at the same temperature. This is because heat-treatment in Ar atmosphere could not form Cu2O due to lack of oxygen, and thermally formed CuO at high temperature suppressed stability and conductivity of the Cu oxide.
