This study was aimed to develop a new ovoid applicator for vaginal high-dose rate intracavitary radiation therapy, evaluate uniformity of dose distribution, and assess clinical applicability. The authors evaluated dose uniformity of vaginal mucosa according to 5-different ovoid-separation using 2-channel and modified 3-channel ovoid applicator. There were no significant differences in the dose distribution along the vaginal mucosa with 2 and 2.5 cm separations, but there were between the 2-channel and 3-channel ovoid applicator with a separation of 3 cm or more. Although a low dose area was shown between two ovoid applicators with the 2-channel ovoid applicator, the dose distribution along the vaginal mucosa with the 3-channel ovoid applicator was very uniform.

I. Purpose Brachytherapy is the main component in treatment of patients with uterine cervical cancer. The reproducibility of applicator position in the same patient at repeated treatments was very important for accurate dose delivery. It was aimed to evaluate the change of applicator location between each high dose rate(HDR) brachytherapy insertion in the patients with uterine cervical cancer. II. Materials and Methods From January 1999 to October 2001, total 52 patients were treated with external beam radiotherapy and HDR brachytherapy (Microselectron, Nucletron). During six to seven times of brachytherapy, all patients had three treatment plans. From the orthogonal radiographs, we measured the following variables; height from upper border of pubic bone to os (HPO), distance from sacral promontory to tip of tandem (DST), distance from coccyx to os (DCO), distance from tip of right ovoid to os (DRO), distance from tip of left ovoid to os (DLO), and distance from center of the first tandem source to ovoid (DTO). To evaluate the reproducibility of applicator position, it was calculated the standard deviation of differences between three insertions for the 7 parameters in each patient. III. Results The ranges of standard deviations of interfractional differences for the variables were as follows. 1)HPO : $0{\sim}0.79cm$ 2)DST : $0{\sim}0.9cm$ 3)DCO : $0.06{\sim}0.76cm$ 4)DRO : $0{\sim}0.53cm$ 5)DLO : $0{\sim}0.45cm$ 6) DTO $0{\sim}0.36cm$ IV. Conclusions There was some change in applicator position on repeated implants in our study. But variation of the interfractional differences was minimal; in all parameters, there were less than 1 cm. We are continued to try for reducing the geometric variation between each procedure.
By measuring with TLD, absorbed dose of rectum will be determined more accurately than calculated value. MgB$_4$O$\sub$7/(Mn) TLD phosphor was prepared and its characteristic was studied. To measure the absorbed dose of rectum with TLD, 33 patients who had intracavitary treatment with $\^$60/Co from April 1994 to September 1994 at Kosin Medical center. There were 10-59% differecne in most cases between the calculation and the measurement for the absorbed dose of rectum. The difference was less the case with tandem and ovoid than the case with only ovoid.
Light and electron microscopical characteristics of Perkinsus sp. parasitizing in Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, in Korea were investigated. Trophozoite within the tissue was spherical or ovoid and ranged $2.5-10.5\mu m$$(mean = 6.2\mu m)$ in diameter. Trophozoite had a nucleus with a prominent nucleolus and a large cytoplasmic vacuole within the cytoplasm. Single trophozoite was phagocytozed by host hemocyte and cluster cells were encapusulated by hemocytes aggregation within the host tissues. Hypnospores incubated in thioglycollate medium (FTM) for 1 to 15 days were also spherical or ovoid and ranged $10-132\mu m$$(mean\pm S.D.\;:\;44.25\pm 7.91\mu m)$ in diameter. Zoospores were spherical or ovoid, had a nucleus and two flagella. Zoospores contained apical complex, which consisted of conoid, subpellicular microtubules, rhoptries and rectilinear micronemes.
The Purpose of this study was to clarity morphological differences among mandibular dental arch forms in Korean malocclusion patients. The sample in this study consisted of 114 Class I. 119 Class II, and 135 Class III malocclusion cases. The most facial portions of 13 proximal contact areas were digitized from photocopied images of the mandibular dental arches. Clinical bracket points were calculated for each tooth based on the data on the mandibular tooth thickness. Four linear and two proportional measurements were undertaken The dental arches were classified into square. ovoid, and tapered forms to compare the frequency distributions. Our results suggested that there was no single arch form specific to any particular Angle classification or sex. It appeared to be the frequency of a particular arch form that varies among the Angle classifications. In comparison of arch measurements between male and female. there was no statistical difference except in the intermolar width. In comparison of arch size measurements among the different Angle classifications, there were statistically significant differences between Class I and Class III malocclusion groups and between Class II and Class III malocclusion groups. In comparison oi frequency distribution of arch forms in Class I and III malocclusion groups, the square form demonstrated the highest distribution followed by the ovoid and tapered forms in that order. In the Class II malocclusion group, the square form showed the highest distribution. followed by the tapered and ovoid forms in that order There was no statistical difference in the frequency distribution of arch forms between male and female groups.
The purpose of this study was to compare arch dimensions and frequency distribution of arch forms between Korean and Japanese Class I, II, and III malocclusion groups. Methods: The sample consisted of 368 Korean cases (114 Class I, 119 Class II, and 135 Class III malocclusion) and 160 Japanese cases (60 Class I, 50 Class II, and 50 Class III malocclusion). The most facial portion of 13 proximal contact areas was digitized from photocopied images of the mandibular dental arches. Clinical bracket slot points were calculated for each tooth based on mandibular tooth thickness data. Four linear and two proportional measurements were taken. Measurements are statistically analyzed in each malocclusion group. The dental arches were classified into square, ovoid, and tapered forms to determine and compare the frequency distributions between the two ethnic groups. Results: The findings of this study showed that Japanese females in Class I and II groups had a statistically significant narrower mandibular dental arch width compared with the Japanese males, Korean males and Korean females. But in the Class III group, there was no significant difference in the mandibular dental arch size according to the two ethnic groups and genders. Conclusions: The majority of Koreans and Japanese in all the malocclusion groups exhibited square and ovoid arch forms. The most frequent arch forms found in Koreans was square but ovoid for Japanese.
There are three different types of gynecological applicator sets available in microSelectron-high dose-rate(HDR) System by Nucletron; standard applicator set(SAS), standard shielded applicator set(SSAS), and Fletcher-Williamson applicator set(FWAS). Shielding effect of a SAS without shielding material was compared with that of a SSAS with shielding material made of stainless steel(density ${\varrho}=8,000kg/m^3$) at the top and bottom of each ovoid, and of a FWAS with shielding material made of tungsten alloy(density ${\varrho}=14,000kg/m^3$ at the top and bottom of each ovoid. The shielding effects to the rectum and bladder of these two shielded applicator sets were to be measured at reference points with an ion chamber and specially designed supporting system for applicator ovoids inside of the computerized 3-dimensional water phantom. To determine the middle point of two ovoids the measurement was performed with the reference tip of ion chamber placed at the same level and at the middle point from the two ovoids, while scanning the dose with the ion chamber on each side of ovoids. The doses to the reference points of rectum were measured at 20(Rl), 25(R2), 30(R3), 40(R4), 50(R5), and 60(R6) mm located posteriorly on the vertical line drawn from M5(the middle dwell position of ovoid), and the doses to the bladder were measured at 20(Bl), 30(B2), 40(B3), 50(B4), and 60(B5) mm located anteriorly on the vertical line drawn from M5. The same technique was employed to measure the doses on each reference point of both SSAS and FWAS. The differences of measured rectal doses at 25 mm(R2) and 30 mm(R3) between SAS and SSAS were 8.0 % and 6.0 %: 25.0% and 23.0 % between SAS and FWAS. The differences of measured bladder doses at 20 mm(Bl) and 30 mm(B2) between SAS and SSAS were 8.0 % and 3.0 %: 23.0 % and 17.0 % between SAS and FWAS. The maximum shielding effects to the rectum and bladder of SSAS were 8.0 % and 8.0 %, whereas those of FWAS were 26.0 % and 23.0 %, respectively. These results led to the conclusion that FWAS has much better shielding effect than SSAS does, and when SSAS and FWAS were used for gynecological intracavitary brachytherapy in microSelectron-HDR system, the dose to the rectum and bladder was significantly reduced to optimize the treatment outcome and to lower the complication rates in the rectum and bladder.
The purpose of this study was to clarify morphologic characteristics between mandibular clinical arch forms in Koreans with normal occlusions. The study included data from 102 Koreans. The most facial portion of 13 proximal contact areas was digitized from photocopied images of the mandibular dental arches. Clinical bracket points were calculated for each tooth based on mandibular tooth thickness data. Four linear and two proportional measurements were taken. The dental arches were classified into ovoid, square and tapered forms. The frequency distributions of the three mandibular arch form classifications were determined and compared between male and female subjects. No significant differences in arch form size were found between the sexes. However, there were a few differences in molar width. It was useful to classify mandibular clinical arch forms present in normal occlusion samples into ovoid, square and tapered categories. The frequency of the ovoid form was the highest, and that of the square form was the second highest. The tapered arch form was found in less than 10 percent of subjects. No significant differences in their frequency distributions and dimensions were shown between males and females.
A 6 and a half year-old girl developed recurrent cholangitis following hepatic portoenterostomy for biliary atresia. Computed tomogram showed an ovoid cyst ($4.5{\times}4.0$ cm in size) in the left hepatic lobe and another tubular dilatation ($2.0{\times}0.8$ cm in size) in the right hepatic lobe. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage(PTCD) and cystogram showed an ovoid cyst in the left hepatic lobe (Tsuchida type A), measuring $6.6{\times}5.0$ cm in size. Following drainage and administration of parenteral antibiotics she became afebrile and anicteric. However she continued to drain 45-150 cc of bile per day via the tube over the next 2 weeks. The patient successfully underwent intrahepatic cystojejunostomy with intraoperative ultrasonographic guidance. This case illustrates relapsing cholangitis caused by Tsuchida type A intrahepatic cyst, successfully managed with PTCD followed by an internal drainage procedure.
Centroceras gasparrinii is characterized by 1) straight spines, 2) an ovoid gland cell, 3) tetrasporangia with involucral branchlets, and 4) ovoid cortical cells on the first and second cortical initials. A similar Centroceras species with dichotomous habit, "Centroceras clavulatum", has been widely known as a common species of Korean marine flora. However, the species known as "C. clavulatum" in Korea is recognized as C. gasparrinii based on the molecular and morphological evidence. Newly generated sequences of rbcL gene reveal that all taxa of Centroceras from Korea having dichotomous branching pattern are C. gasparrinii. There is 0-0.07% sequence divergence among specimens of C. gasparrinii in Korea. "Centroceras clavulatum" is excluded from Korean flora and C. gasparrinii is included instead of "Centroceras clavulatum". C. gasparrinii also differs from C. distichum in Korea in that it has tetrasporangia with involucral branchlets and dichotomous branching pattern, while C. distichum has immersed tetrasporangia and an alternate branching pattern.
