  • Hydrogen purification is generally performed through chemical and physical methods. Among various types of purification method PSA(Pressure Swing Adsorption) is widely used with its purification capacity and economic efficiency. In Korea, most of the hydrogen used in automobiles and power generation fuel cells is purified using PSA. Hydrogen produced in petrochemical complexes has difficulties in transportation. The government is planning to install hydrogen extractors that produce hydrogen directly from consumers in connection with the city gas supply chain, and companies are also installing related research and demonstration facilities one after another. Europe and others have recently established safety standards related to PSA and are making efforts for systematic safety management at the construction and operation stage, but domestic safety standards related to PSA are still insufficient. This study aims to identify problems of existing facilities through surveys and risk assessment by companies operating existing PSA, and to prepare domestic technical standards including them in overseas technical standards to promote the safety of new and existing PSA systems.

  • Infrastructure engineering is a field that supports construction (assembly) as a representative industry that creates high added value and jobs by combining science and technology with knowledge, though its importance is underestimated. According to a report from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Korea), the value-added rate (65.3%) of the engineering industry and the employment inducement coefficient (14 employees per billion won) are three times higher than in manufacturing. In particular, the forward value chain (such as project management and basic design) accounts for less than 10~15% of the total project cost but determines the overall price and quality of the infrastructure facilities. In this study, a work break-down system, design support module and database development method for road design projects for design platform development is presented. Based on the presented development method, a cloud-based infrastructure design platform's prototype is developed. The developed infrastructure engineering platform is expected to provide a web-based design work environment without time/space restrictions and greatly contribute to winning overseas business orders and securing competitiveness.

  • Recently, the frequency of installation of ventilation towers is increasing due to the planning and construction of underground roads and long tunnel. In this study, implications and points for improvement were considered through investigation and analysis of the installation standards related to ventilation towers in tunnels and analysis of ventilation tower installation cases in domestic and overseas tunnel case study. As a result of this study, when selecting the location and height of the ventilation tower, it is recommended to determine the final ventilation tower type through a consultation process with residents, considering the environmental impact caused by the emission of pollutants, the harmonious arrangement with the surrounding landscape, and the efficient use of the above-ground site nearby ventilation tower. In addition, from the design stage, it is judged that a detailed review of reducing the height of the ventilation tower through air quality simulation is necessary for natural harmony with the surrounding topography and to prevent civil complaints.

  • This study reviews urban infrastructure and housing management in Kuwait to establish a strategy for going abroad in an urban management sector after the construction of the Kuwait New Town. This study reviews legal systems and governance related to urban infrastructure and housing management as well, offering implications that are collated from international and Korean case studies. By doing so, this paper proposes a governance structure for urban infrastructure and housing management along with key agendas for local institutional improvements. This study suggests that the establishment of a legal system equivalent to the Korean Multi-family Housing Management Act is a key to institutional improvements. The (tentatively entitled) 'Housing Management Act' is proposed to specify the scope and the ways of management in mandatory management subject to local conditions. The direction of going abroad, such as the management scope and the implementation system, discussed in this study can be used as a reference when expanding into other countries in the Middle East that have similar institutional environments to Kuwait in urban infrastructure and housing management.

  • In Korea, drones, which are at the core of the 4th industrial revolution, are used to promote Korean New Deal policies to digitalize the SOC. Overseas, the use of convergence sensors, such as thermal imaging cameras, on drones is increasing in various industrial fields. In this research, to improve pavement quality in highway bridge pavement construction, a thermal imaging camera was mounted on a drone to measure and verify the temperature of the pavement work section. Using a laser thermometer allows the partial measurement of pavement temperature. It was confirmed that the proposed method allows not only real-time temperature monitoring of the whole pavement work section but also uniformity verification by checking temperature distribution. The proposed method has the potential to control highway pavement quality and enable quick decision-making on traffic opening times by reducing the possibility of misjudging road opening times(pavement surface temperature ≦ 40℃).

  • The autogenous pressurization has been widely adopted for propulsion systems of next-generation reusable rockets due to its low cost and high reliability. The autogenous pressurization has a simple structure, but an understanding of the heat and mass transfer occurring inside the tank is essential. For this reason, a simulation test of the autogenous pressurization was conceived. The experiment equipment was constructed based on overseas pressurization test facilities cases and expert advice. Unlike the actual autogenous pressurization system, the propellant tank was insulated to exclude external influences. The pressurized gas supply line and the propellant pipe were separated. Using the manufactured autogenous pressure experiment equipment, it is possible to evaluate the condensation phenomenon of pressurants in cryogenic propellants, comparison of the efficiency of pressurization using helium and evaporated gas and the pressurization capacity according to the temperature of pressurant.

  • In accordance with Korean structural foundation design standards, dynamic or static load tests are mandated for 1 to 3% of total piles. The construction quality of the remaining 97% to 99% of piles is determined through penetration measurements. This study aims to enhance the quality control of the majority of piles by adopting a pile driving formula that considers both penetration and hammer energy. The current challenge lies in adapting existing overseas driving formulas to the domestic site conditions, characterized by shallow weathered or soft rocks, and the prevalent use of pre-bored piles. To address this, the Modified Gates formula was refined using domestic dynamic load data, thereby improving its applicability to pile management. Despite employing fewer variables, the proposed formula demonstrates a comparable accuracy to dynamic loading tests in predicting the bearing capacity of pre-bored piles. Consequently, this formula holds promise for practical use in future pile quality management.

  • Countries around the world are making active efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Korea is also pursuing a policy of abolishing aging coal power and converting it to LNG power generation. However, in Korea, gas turbine manufacturing technology has not been localized, so all of it is imported and installed from overseas manufacturers. Therefore, this paper examines the domestic and foreign environment of the gas turbine power generation industry and proposes a strategy to develop and expand the supply of Korean gas turbine technology by applying the PEST-SWOT-AHP methodology. As a result of the research, the strategy to develop and expand the supply of Korean gas turbine technology can be summarized as 1) strengthening the role of power generation public enterprises to develop and promote commercialization of gas turbine technology, 2) expanding the proportion of LNG power generation to reduce greenhouse gases, 3) the government's active efforts to create an ecosystem for the gas turbine industry, and 4) forming a public consensus on the construction of LNG power plants.

  • This study estimated ultimate load by the determination methods based on ultimate load, yield load and settlement using experimental data from static load tests that applied load to driven piles used in sandy grounds at home and overseas until failure appeared markedly. Estimated ultimate load was normalized with actually measured failure load, and was compared among the determination methods according to the characteristics of pile. In addition, I have identified to the determination methods suitable for estimating ultimate load, and reevaluated the safety factor when determining allowable load. From the results of this study were drawn conclusions as follows. Among ultimate loads estimated by the ultimate-load-based determination methods, the value interpreted by Chin's method tended to overestimate actual measurements, and B. Hansen 80% standard and the stability plot method were considered most reliable as their results were closest to actual measurements. According to the results of this study, in calculating the allowable load, if the safety factor to be applied to failing load obtained by the method of determining extreme load is converted to the safety factor applied to the Standards for Structure Foundation Design, a value larger than 3.0 should be applied except the B. Hansen 90% method, and a value larger than 2.0 should be applied in the methods of determining yield load. In addition, if the safety factor to be applied to load obtained by the settlement standard is converted based on safety factor 3.0 for extreme load, a value smaller than 3.0 should be applied to the total settlement standard and the net settlement standard.
