  • Because forest fire can give a serious damage to overhead conductors, the thorough understanding about aging behavior of burned conductor is very important in maintaining the transmission line safely. Therefore, a systematic investigation was carried out by heating method. As the heating temperature increases, drastic change of tensile strength of Al wire due to the softening of Al wire occurred. When Al wire is exposed to the flame(about $800^{\circ}C$) during only 13 seconds, the remained tensile strength of Al wire showed under 90%. The detailed results will be given in the text.

  • This paper deals with a unified way for calculating vortex-induced vibrations (Aeolian vibrations in transmission line parlance) of undamped single overhead conductors. The main objective of the paper is to identify reduced parameters which would unify the predicted vibration response to the largest possible extent. This is actually done by means of a simple mathematical transformation resulting, for a given terrain (associated to a given wind turbulence intensity), into a single, unified response curve that is applicable to any single multi-layered aluminium conductor. In order to further validate the above process, the predicted, unified response curve is compared with measured response curves drawn from tests run on a full-scale test line using several aluminium-conductor-steel-reinforced (ACSR), all-alloy-aluminium-conductor (AAAC) and aluminium-conductor-alloy-reinforced (ACAR) conductors strung at different tensions. On account of the expected scatter in the results from such field tests, the agreement is shown to be good. The final results are expressed by means of only four different curves pertaining to four different terrain characteristics. These curves may then be used to assess the vibration response of any undamped single, multi-layer aluminium conductor of any diameter, strung at any practical tension.

  • Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) techniques have been greatly worthy of notice for efficiently increasing transmission capacity as well as controlling load-flow in overhead transmission lines, in comparison with the existing power system operating with Static Line Rating (SLR). This paper describes an utilization method to implement DLR control system for old transmission lines built in the first stage using the ground clearance design standard with lower dips. The suggested DLR system is focused on designing as temperature control system rather than current/load control system. Based on several performance for conductor temperatures, it is shown that DLR system with efficiency can be implemented.

  • The thermal rating of an overhead conductor, which is the maximum allowable current, is generally calculated on the basis of heat balance equation found in IEEE P738 standard. This is given as a function of the weather conditions such as air temperature, wind speed, wind direction, and sun heat. Wind speed among such weather parameters is strongly affected on determining the line rating when it appears very low level. Therefore there may occur inaccuracy since most anemometers used in line rating monitor systems may show low resolutions and stall speed performance. In this paper, we introduce a new methodology for determining the dynamic line rating in overhead transmission lines, without using my anemometer. It was shown that wind speed can be estimated by the temperatures of 2 indirect conductors, and through experimental study, the dynamic line rating obtained by the estimated wind speed was very closely that of weather model.

  • According to previous report, aged sleeves for old transmission lines have various defect such as biased installation or corrosion of steel sleeve. These defects occupied almost 50 percent of investigated aged sleeves. These defects can cause serious accidents such as rapid increasing of sag or falling out of overhead conductor from sleeves. Moreover, the defects have been limited power capacity of transmission line. This paper study on thermal behavior of ACSR 480Rail conductor and sleeve with various defect model. The detailed results were presented in the text.

  • Long span cross-rope suspension structure is an innovative structural system evolved from typical Cross-Rope Suspension (CRS) guyed tower, a type of supporting system with short span suspension cable supporting overhead power transmission lines. In mountainous areas, the span length of suspension cable was designed to be extended to hundreds or over one thousand meters, which is applicable for crossing deep valleys. Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV) of overhead power transmission lines was considered to be one of the major factors of its fatigue and service life. In this paper, VIV and its controlling by Stockbridge damper for long span CRS was discussed. Firstly, energy balance method and finite element method for assessing VIV of CRS were presented. An approach of establishing FE model of long span CRS structure with dampers was introduced. The effect of Stockbridge damper for overall vibration of CRS was compared in both theoretical and numerical approaches. Results indicated that vibration characteristics of conductor in long span CRS compared with traditional tower-line system. Secondly, analysis on long span CRS including Stockbridge damper showed additional dampers installed were essential for controlling maximum dynamic bending stresses of conductors at both ends. Moreover, factors, including configuration and mass of Stockbridge damper, span length of suspension cable and conductor and number of spans of conductor, were assessed for further discussion on VIV controlling of long span CRS.

  • The overhead transmission wires operating both at warm temperature and tighten state for a long period of time in a power transmission plant are degraded by air pollution, wind, creep and slip between steel wire and aluminium conductor. The objective of this study is to investigate to investigate the characteristics of fatigue properties with tension and bending loading of a high carbon steel wire. The fatigue behaviors have been carried out by tension-tension, 4 points bending and 3 points bending loading. In the present study, a conventional fatigue strengths between 4 points bending and tension-tension fatigue were determined by Gerber, Sorderberg and Goodmans theory and we investigated S-N diagram for bending and tensile loading.
