The absorption of water into an anti-corrosive organic coating, such as alkyd and urethane resin coating, was investigated, using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Anticorrosive properties of the coatings were also measured, by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The overall absorption of water in the coating is determined by the chemical nature of resin, and decreases with increasing thickness. The enhancement of anti-corrosive performance, through increase of coating thickness, was more remarkable in the case of the coating that hadlower equilibrium water absorption. The absorption kinetics curves were Fickian in nature. The EIS analysis confirmed that the resin, having lower equilibrium water absorption, shows higher anti-corrosive performan.
The binding of heavy metals by a biosorbent with binary functional groups was mathematically modeled. An FT-IR spectrophotometer analysis was employed to determine the stoichiometry between the protons in the functional groups of alginic acid and lead ions as a model system. The results calculated using an equilibrium constant agreed well with the experimental results obtained under various operating conditions, such as pH and metal ion concentration. It was also shown that the overall adsorption phenomenon of alginic acid was mainly due to its carboxyl groups. The equilibrium constants for each functional group successfully predicted the lead adsorption of ${\alpha}$-cellulose. Furthermore, the biosorption model could predict the adsorption phenomena of two metal ions, lead ions and calcium ions, relatively.

The effect of the presence of dissolved organic matters(DOM) on the binding of phenanthrene to cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC) coated sand was investigated. The distribution coefficient of phenanthrene increased with increase of sufactant coverage, and decreased with the presence of dissolved organic matters except for the 1.600mg/g coverage case. Both Aldrich humic acid and extracted dissolved organic matter showed the similar tendency. For the quantification of the overall distribution coefficient, this study presented mass distribution model and estimated the sorption equilibrium coefficients of hydrophobic organic compounds(HOCs) in multi system. The suggested model combined a series of sorption equilibrium relationships including the adsorption of DOMs on sorbents, the binding between HOCs and DOMs, and the sorption of HOCs on sorbents with or without DOMs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between concepts on chemical reaction rates and concepts on chemical equilibrium in high school students. The subjects of the investigation consisted of 120 third grade students attending high school in K city of Kyunggi province. For this study, questionnaire relevant to the subject of chemical reaction rates and chemical equilibrium was developed and the answers were analyzed. As a result of the study, a large percentage of high school students answered questions on reaction rates correctly, but only a small percentage of the students could give explanations. Many high school students answered questions on the rates of forward reactions correctly, but not the questions on the rates of reverse reactions. For the concepts on chemical equilibrium, many high school students gave correct answers when faced with equilibrium questions that only required the understanding of one side of the reaction. But the students could not answer the questions requiring understanding of both forward and reverse reactions as well. Overall, there was a little high correlation between concepts on chemical reaction rates and concepts on chemical equilibrium in high school students. Especially, high school students with little understanding of reverse reaction rates did not understand that chemical equilibrium is a dynamic equilibrium. Also, high school students with little understanding of the collision mechanism regarding chemical reaction rates did not understand the effect of concentration and catalyst factors on chemical equilibrium. And the correlation between concepts on chemical reaction rates and concepts on chemical equilibrium related to concentration and catalyst factors was low. In conclusion, the formation of scientific concepts on chemical reactions rates can decrease misconceptions on chemical equilibrium. Also the teaching-learning method limited to one side of a reaction can cause difficulty in forming the concepts on chemical dynamic equilibrium. Therefore, the development of a teaching-learning method which covers both the forward and reverse reactions can be effective in helping students form the concepts on chemical equilibrium.
$\beta$-ketohexanal as a chelating extractant was synthesized from the reaction of ethyl formate and methyl propyl ketone in the presence of sodium amide, and the equilibrium characteristics in the extraction of copper by $\beta$-ketohexanal-chloroform were investigated. The equilibrium constants such as the dissociation constant and the partition coefficients of $\beta$-ketohexanal, the stability constant and the partition coefficient of copper chelating complex, and the overall equilibrium constant in the extraction of copper were determined by spectrophotometric measurements, and the mechanism of extraction was proposed. The percent of extracted copper by $\beta$-ketohexanal-chloroform was near 100%, and the selective extraction of copper from Cu-Zn-Cd mixture was possible. Copper was found to be extracted as $CuR_2$ and the equilibrium reaction was expressed as $Cu^{2+}+2{\overline{HR}}{\rightleftarrows}{\overline{CuR{_2}}}+2H^+$.

An analytical procedure is described to estimate the mobilized tensile forces along the effective lengths of nails. Based on the horizontal focing displacements of a nailed-soil wall experiencing outward tilt about the toe with granular soil deposit, the variation of nail-soil friction coefficient is modeled. Also, the method of overall stability analysis of a nailed-soil wall is presented using the Morgenstem-Price limit-equilibrium slice method. The results predicted by the developed procedure are compared with test measurements. The comparisons show in general good agreement.

An analytical method based on the nonlinear layered finite element method is developed to simulate overall load-deflection behavior of bonded and unbonded prestressed concrete beams. The model which uses rather advanced numerical technique for iterative convergence to equilibrium can be regarded as superior one compared to the models mainly based on either load control or displacement control methods. Model predictions were compared with preceding experimental results and it was observed that there were good agreements between them.
The kinetic change of electrical resistance of hairless mouse skin as a function of ionic strength of the bathing medium was determined from impedance measurements. After increasing (decreasing) the ionic strength of the bathing medium, resistance decreased (increased) continuously with time, finally reaching an equilibrium value. We have modelled this process, using nonsteady-state diffusion kinetics. The results show semi-quantitative correlation between theoretically derived and experimentally obtained values. Overall, this work provides further mechanistic insight into ion-conduction through the skin.
The congestion management is a key task for enhancing the effectiveness of transmission pricing mechanism in a competitive electricity market. In this paper, the zonal method of congestion management is analyzed quantitatively using equilibrium concept, and compared with the nodal pricing method. It is shown that the generation firm uses different strategies in the two methods, and the overall performance of zonal congestion management depends on the determination of zones.

On the absorber of absorption chiller/heater, LiBr solution at high concentration is sprinkled on a bundle of horizontal tube cooled by cooling water. In this case, the conditions of LiBr solution and cooling water have an influence on heat/mass transfer coefficient in this system. Therefor it is important to find optimal operation conditions of absorption chiller/heater to save energy. Heat and mass transfer coefficient increased with the increase of solution flow rate, and also heat and mass transfer rate increased but overall heat and mass transfer coefficient decreased by increasing the solution concentration within the experimental range. The superheating of the solution resulted in superior heat transfer character to a state of equilibrium from the point of heat flux and overall heat transfer coefficient.
