  • Summary of experiments for the investigation of a fire which caused an upward fire spread for over 12 floors through balconies in a high-rise apartment complex is reported. The experiments include indoor tests to obtain fire properties of vertical PMMA fences and outdoor ones with a full scale model of the balcony. The test results suggest significance of the increase of total flame height by the merging of flames and a cooperative effect of the burning of the PMMA fence and combustibles on the balconies for the generation of a tall flame enough to cause ignition on the upper floors.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and determine the level of the satisfaction and awareness of facilities in child care centers among teachers and parents. Special attention was given to both the indoor and outdoor environments from the viewpoints of both parents and teachers. The subject of this research focused on parents who leave their children at child care centers, and teachers who work for the center. The data was compiled by performing both T-tests and paired T-test. The information was processed by a program called SPSS WIN 10.0. The results were as follows ; 1. (a) With regard to the satisfaction of the external and internal facilities : It was determined that both the play rooms and the wall-pattern arrangements were satisfactory to both the parents and the teachers. (b) Regarding the awareness of the importance of facilities, while the parents focused more on the play rooms and the external environments, the teachers placed more importance on the bathrooms and the play rooms. 2. In the paired T-test that determined whether their individual opinions were different in terms of the satisfaction and awareness of facilities, it was interesting to see that both the parents and the teachers showed significant differences in their opinions and priorities about the porches, the play rooms, the bathrooms and the wall-pattern arrangements. In general, their awareness was much higher than the satisfaction with these facilities. 3. In the T-test that determined whether there were any tendencies in the satisfaction and awareness respectively in the two groups, the satisfaction rate was higher among the parents than the teachers. In terms of the awareness of the importance of the facilities, the teachers rated the bathrooms and the wall-pattern arrangements as a priority.

  • Fatigue strength of temporary steels and painted structural steels corroded under outdoor atmospheric environments is not clear. In this study, fatigue tests were carried out on steel plates which were cut off from 7-year-old temporary structural member under subway construction environment and from 75-year-old Yeongdo bridge member under marine atmospheric environment. After removing corrosion production on the steel surface, 3-dimensional surface geometry of the corroded steel was measured at intervals of $1.0{\times}1.0mm$, and corrosion characteristics such as minimum, maximum and mean values of residual thicknesses were calculated. From the fatigue test and FEM analysis results, the relationship between corrosion characteristics and fatigue behavior was presented, and change in fatigue strength of the unpainted and painted steels corroded in outdoor environments was also presented.

  • Heat pumps come into wide use because high energy efficiency can be obtained and diverse heat sources like geothermal heat, waste heat and air are available. It is necessary for an air source heat pump to defrost in order to remove frost on the surfaces of an outdoor heat exchanger. It is impossible for continuous heating if reverse cycle operation is used as defrosting method, furthermore it causes the degradation of COP. In this study an fin-tube heat exchanger with three rows was used as an outdoor coil. One row among three rows of the heat exchanger was used like a condenser in order to remove frost on it, the others were used as evaporator to accomplish continuous heating. Each row was switched in order from a condenser to an evaporator in specified time interval. Tests were carried out during minimum 180 minutes at the defrost-heating test condition(dry bulb temperature $2^{\circ}C$, wet bulb temperature $1^{\circ}C$) described in KS C 9306. Time-averaged COP was about 20% higher than that of conventional defrosting method.

  • The positioning system based on wireless AP collects AP information distributed in the real world, stores it into database, and measures the position objects by comparing with searched AP information. The existing fingerprinting method is a probabilistic modeling method that acquires much of the data collected from one location upon database composition, and stores the average of the data for the sake of use it in positioning objects. Using the average value, however, may cause the probability of errors Such errors are fatal weaknesses for services based on the accurate position. This paper described the characteristics and problems of the previously used wireless AP positioning system, and proposed a method of using the AP DB and an MSS mechanism for outdoor positioning in order to solve the aforementioned problems. And the results obtained from experimental tests showed that the proposed method achieved very low error rate(27%) compared with the existing method.

  • The vulnerabilities existed in Korean electricity control systems is unexposed because it is being operated in a closed network with superior security. The threat will become greater once the closed network develops into a smart grid environment with superior intelligence. Security will have a greater impact once each household will be connected to the power plant via the smart meter. This research focuses on stable data transfer in harsh external environment and whole-nation coverage network, and suggested standardized and optimized Virtual Private Network (VPN) Gateway architecture to support Power Line Communication (PLC). The functionality and stability of the prototype has been verified with field tests. For implementation of outdoor type VPN device for smart grid, we adopted PLC low voltage remote-meter-net for data communication. Also, IPSec type tunneling and ARIA algorithm based encryption of data collected by PLC low voltage remote meter is transmitted.

  • In civil engineering, revolving structures (RS) are a unique structural form applied in innovative architecture design. Such structures are able to revolve around themselves or along a certain track. However, few studies are dedicated to safety design or health monitoring of RS. In this paper, a wireless dynamic sensing system is developed for RS, and field tests toward a large revolving auditorium are conducted accordingly. At first, a wheel-rail problem is proposed: The internal force redistributes in RS, which is due to wheel-rail irregularity. Then the development of the sensing system for RS is presented. It includes system architecture, network organization, vibrating wire sensor (VWS) nodes and online remote control. To keep the sensor network identifiable during revolving, the addresses of sensor nodes are reassigned dynamically when RS position changes. At last, the system is mounted on a huge outdoor revolving auditorium. Considering the influence of the proposed problem, the RS of the auditorium has been designed conservatively. Two field tests are conducted via the sensing system. In the first test, 2000 people are invited to act as the live load. During the revolving process, data is collected from RS in three different load cases. The other test is the online monitoring for the auditorium during the official performances. In the end, the field-testing result verifies the existence of the wheel-rail problem. The result also indicates the dynamic sensing system is applicable and durable even while RS is rotating.

  • This paper describes an image disparity estimation method using a segmented-region based stereo matching. Segmented-region based disparity estimation yields a disparity map as the unit of segmented region. However, there is a problem that it estimates disparity imprecisely. The reason is that because it not only have matching errors but also apply an identical way to disparity estimation, which is not considered each type of matched regions. To solve this problem, we proposes a disparity estimation method which is considered the type of matched regions. That is, the proposed method classifies whole matched regions into similar-matched region, dissimilar-matched region, false-matched region and miss-matched region by analyzing the type of matched regions. We then performs proper disparity estimation for each type of matched regions. This method minimizes the error in estimating disparity which is caused by inaccurate matching and also improves the accuracy of disparity of the well-matched regions. For the purpose of performance evaluations, we perform tests on a variety of scenes for synthetic, indoor and outdoor images. As a result of tests, we can obtain a dense disparity map which has the improved accuracy. The remarkable result is that the accuracy of disparity is also improved considerably for complex outdoor images which are barely treatable in the previous methods.
