  • The dust generated from the electric arc furnace steel making process is classified as hazardous material by Korean Environmental Protection Acts, mainly because of the existence of water teachable Pb, Zn and Cd. Thus the treatment of EAF dust is being carried out to fulfill both the environmental aspect and recovery of valuable metals. To establish the proper process for recovering the valuable metals (Fe, Zn, Pb and Cd) and producing the non-toxic slag from EAF dust, using RAPID-10 system, feasibility study have been carried out. To find out the scale-up factor for designing the commercial scale EAF dust treatment process(capacity 50,000 ton EAF dust per year) entitled RAPID-50 system. The design and construction of RAPID-50 (RIST Arc Plasma Industrial Device) system for treating 50,000 ton of EAF dust per year is now undergoing. Overall plan for treating EAF dust generated in KOREA will be setup after successful operation (December, 2002) of RAPID-50 system.

  • This paper intends to suggest the positive, ecological vision of sustainability in Karen Hesse's Out of the Dust that Billie Jo Kelby recovers herself through her readjustment of interior consciousness and outer environment in her tragic situations caused by the Dust Bowl. In spite of her desires for happiness and affluence of home, she loses her mother and brother, and her musical talent as a pianist, and lies in self-abandonment. But she finally raises up herself with her courage and patience, reconciliating with the nature and ameliorating the community by taking care of the devastated landscapes. Hence it is appropriate to approach the loss-recovery process of nature and consciousness with ecological solutions, The Dust Bowl breaks down human mind and body, and eventually leads to the situations of despairs and death. Hesse proposes the primary solution that humans should reconstruct their interior consciousness and participate in recovering the nature because humans are inevitably linked with nature. In this novel, the nature takes a dynamic and active role as a catalyst, reconciling the self with other humans and settling with the conflicting situations in history and culture. This verse novel as an active, self-ordering, and corrective process gives the more intense ecological message. As Hesse defines the setting of Dirty Thirties as a channel of energy, she creates the utmost effects of ecological process that human and environment are part of a total situation, representing the transactional formulation, each conditioned by conditioning to the other. Therefore Billie Jo takes her part as an interpreter and actualizes herself, understanding the nature with metaphor and symbol. Eventually Billie Jo realizes that she should rebuild her environment not out of the dust but in the dust, accepting the reality of Dust Bowl.

석회석 노천채광장의 분진 비산특성 (Dust Fall Property of Open Cut Limestone Mine)

  • 본 연구에서는 Dust Fall Sample을 설치하여 한라시멘트 옥계 채광현장의 천공, 발파작업시 발생되는 분진을 측정하고, 실험적인 방법으로 100m길이의 가설 풍동을 만들어 풍속별 비산거리 및 분진입도 분포 등을 파악하여 주변작업 환경영향을 평가하였다. 그 결과 낙진량은 기본적으로 분진원으로부터 거리가 멀어질 수록 현저하게 감소하며, 같은 조건일 때는 풍속이 빠를수록 낙진량도 증가하였다. 또한 석회석 노천채광시 발파작업장으로부터 100m 내외의 주변 지표상의 낙진량은 아주 작은량임을 알 수 있었다.

  • 화성은 국지적인 강한 바람과 그 바람에 의해 표면의 먼지들이 솟아오르는 현상들을 가지고 있다. 대기 순환과 먼지 상승은 서로 관계가 있다고는 알려져 있지만, 먼지 상승의 역학적 원인은 명확하게 밝혀진 것은 없다. 먼지 폭풍은 히말라야 산 높이까지 상승하는 매우 강한 상승 기류인데 이런 기류들은 탐사선이 착륙할 때 또는 로버가 탐사를 수행할 때 피해야 할 위험 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 대기 순환과 관련된 먼저 폭풍의 발생 시기와 발생 지역 분포에 대해 조사하였다. 대기 순환의 원천적인 에너지는 태양이기 때문에 먼지 폭풍의 발생 시기와 화성의 계절에 대해 분석하였고, 최종적으로는 발생 시기와 발생 지역의 공간 분포의 관계를 지도로 작성하였다. 이 자료를 토대로 화성 먼지 폭풍의 발생이 빈번하지 않은 지역과 시기를 예측할 수 있다. 향후 이 자료는 국내 자력으로 화성 착륙선을 보낼 때 착륙시기와 관계하여 발사시점 및 착륙지점을 선정하는데 있어서 결정적인 역할을 할 것이라고 기대한다.

Ammonium Chloride Solution Leaching of Crude Zinc Oxide Recovered from Reduction of EAF′s Dust

  • EAF's dust has been treated mainly by pyrometallurgical reduction process in rotary kiln furnace to recover valuable metal elements such as Zn and to avoid the disposal of hazardous materials to waste. Recently, hydrometallurgical eletrowinning of zinc from a zinc-amino chloride solution obtained by the leaching of EAF's dust was developed to recover high grade zinc metal from EAF’s dust. But there are some disadvantages in each process such as difficulty of operation condition control and sticking problem in kiln process and low extractability and recovery of zinc owing to insoluble zinc-ferrite in electrowinning process. We propose a new combined process of pyrometallurgical one and hydrometallurgical one to treat EAF's dust efficiently and economically. In this study, ammonium chloride solution leaching of crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust was carried out to find out the efficiency of zinc extraction from it and the possibility for performance of eletrowinning in the proposed process. Effects of various leaching variables ruck as leaching temperature, concentration of leaching solution and leaching time were investigated. And the leaching results of the crude zinc oxide were compared with those of EAF's dust. The extraction percents of zinc in ammonium chloride solution leaching of the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust were above 80% after 60 minutes of leaching under the leaching condition of 4M NH$_4$CI concentration and above leaching temperature of 7$0^{\circ}C$. And the concentrations of zinc in the leached solution were obtained above 50g/$\ell$. The activation energy calculated for zinc extraction in NH$_4$CI leaching was 58.1 KJ/㏖ for EAF's dust and 15.8 KJ/㏖ for the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust.

광산란방식을 이용한 미세먼지 실시간 모니터링 장치 개발 및 성능평가 (Development and Performance Evaluation of a Real-time PM Monitor based on Optical Scattering Method)

  • In this study, we have developed a real-time monitoring device for measuring PM10 and PM2.5 of ambient aerosol particles. The real-time PM monitor (SENTRY Dust Monitor) uses the optical scattering method and has 16 channels in particle size. The laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the developed SENTRY Dust Monitor. Arizona Test Dust particles were used as test particles in the laboratory test and the field test was carried out at the Jongno-gu Observatory in Seoul. The measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations obtained by SENTTRY Dust Monitor were compared with Grimm Dust Monitor (Model 1.108) and a beta ray gauge. It was shown that the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations obtained by SENTRY Dust Monitor agree well with that of the reference devices. Based on the results obtained in this study, it could be concluded that the SENTRY Dust Monitor can be used as a PM monitoring device for real-time monitoring of the ambient aerosols.

동북아 황사문제에 대한 일반인의 인식 (The Recognition for Asian-dust in North-East Asia)

  • Dust phenomenon is a critical thing in the East Asian countries. However, it is quite recent that Asian dust has drawn much attention and the scientific investigation of dust particles began. In this study, the recognition for Asian-dust in Northeast Asia region was analyzed. The survey results show that the people generally recognize the origins and seriousness of Asian dust and understand the difficulty in solving the dust related problems. However, approaches to figure out Asian dust have many difficulties and limits in scientific, economic and political points of view and more detailed road map is needed based on government policy.

다파장 라만 라이다 시스템을 이용한 황사/비황사입자 구분 및 비황사입자의 미세물리적 특성 연구 (Classification of Dust/Non-dust Particle from the Asian Dust Plumes and Retrieval of Microphysical Properties using Raman Lidar System)

  • The particle depolarization ratios were retrieved from the observation with a multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Gwangju, Korea ($35.11^{\circ}N$, $126.54^{\circ}E$). The measurements were carried out on 24 February and 9 March 2004. Using the particle depolarization ratios, the non-dust aerosol particles were distinguished from the Asian dust plume, and the proportion of the non-dust particle to total dust plume was retrieved. The calculated proportion of the non-dust particle was used for the retrieval of backscatter coefficients at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and extinction coefficients at 355 and 532 nm of non-dust particles in the dust plume. Microphysical parameters of non-dust particles including single-scattering albedo at 532 nm were retrieved using retrieved optical values. The retrieved single-scattering albedo of non-dust particles was 0.92~0.95 below 1 km height and 0.82~0.91 above 1 km height on 24 February 2004 and $0.81{\pm}0.03$ on 9 March 2004.

국내 석탄광 분진의 특성과 효율적 제어 (Characteristics of domestic coals and efficient control of coal dust)

  • 석탄광산 분진을 환기로 제어하기 위해 현재 국내에서 가행되는 5개 광산의 석탄 분진 시료를 채취하여 석탄 분진의 특성인 밀도와 원소분석, 입도 분석을 시행하였다. 이것은 국내에서 생산되는 모든 무연탄에서 파생되는 석탄 분진의 특성을 이해함으로써 보다 쾌적한 작업환경을 제공하는 연구의 기초가 될 것이다. 입도분석(PSA)결과, 본 연구에 사용된 석탄 분진 시료입자의 크기는 $0.007{\sim}88.614{\mu}m$ 범위에 분포하였으며 이중 진폐증을 유발시킬 수 있는 $3.5{\mu}m$ 이하의 입자가 광산 내 상당부분 존재하는 것으로 확인되었다. 5개광업소에서 채취한 석탄광 분진의 풍속에 의한 유동을 알아보기 위해 풍동을 제작하여 풍속에 대한 석탄광 분진의 낙진을 측정하였으며, 낙진된 석탄 분진의 입도분석을 시행하였다. 또한, 실제 미세먼지가 다량으로 발생하는 채준 작업장에서 공기 중에 부유하는 미세먼지를 앤더슨 멀티스테이지 샘플러(Anderson multi-stage sampler)를 이용하여 석탄광 분진을 작업장에서 환기되는 풍속에 따라 측정하였으며 $3.5{\mu}m$ 이하의 석탄 분진을 제어하는 풍속을 실험을 통하여 밝혀냈다. 주선풍기의 과설계를 방지하기 위해 A광업소의 자연환기력을 계산하였다.
