Heat Transfer with periodic fluctuation of fluid temperature caused by oscillatory flow or compression expansion can be out of phase with balk fluid-wall temperature difference. Newton's law of convection is inadequate to describe this phenomenon. In order to solve this problem the concept of the complex Nusselt number has been introduced by severla researchers. The complex Nusselt number expresses out of phase excellently while the first harmonic is dominant in the variations of both fluid-wall temperature difference and heat flux. However, in the case of oscillatory flow with non-linear wall temperature distribution, the complex Nusselt number is not appropriate to predict the heat transfer phenomena since the higher order harmonic components appear in periodic temperature variation. Analytic solutions to the heat transfer with an sinusoidal well temperature distribution were obtained to investagate the effect of non-linear wall temperature distribution. A new formula considering the thermal boundary layer was suggested based on the solutions. A comparison was also made with the complex Nusselt number. It was verified that the new formula describes well the heat transfer of oscillating flow even if the first harmonic component is not dominant in the fluid-wall temperature difference.
The output of Stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide a basic data for the design of regenerator matrix, characteristics of heat transfer and flow friction loss were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, 6 kinds of steel wires, 4 kinds of combined steel wires, 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes were used. The results are summarized as follows; Among 6 kinds of steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm,\;{\phi}\;1.6\;mm,\;{\phi}2.0\;mm,\;{\phi}2.7\;mm),$ the two steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm)$ showed the highest in effectiveness. Among 4 kinds of combined steel wires $({\phi}l.6-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}l.6\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}l.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm),\;the\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm$ showed the highest in effectiveness. Among 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes $(150-{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;150-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm-150,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}0.9\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}1.2\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}l.6\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}2.0\;mm-150),\;the\;{\phi}l.2\;mm-150$ showed the highest in effectiveness.

The large scale wind turbine blades usually experience periodic change of inflow speed due to blade rotation inside the ground shear flow region. Because of the vertical wind shear, the inflow velocity in the boundary layer region is maximum at uppermost position and minimum at lowermost position. These spatial distribution of wind speeds can lead to the periodic oscillation of the 6-component loads at hub and low speed shaft of the wind turbine rotor. In this study we compare the aerodynamic loads between two inflow conditions, i.e, uniform flow (no vertical wind shear effect) and normal wind profile. From the computed results all of the relative errors for oscillating amplitudes increased due to the ground shear flow effect. Especially bending moment and thrust at hub, and bending moments at LSS increased enormously. It turns out that the aerodynamic analysis including the ground shear flow effect must be considered for fatigue analysis.
A numerical method has been developed for studying the dynamics of a flexible cylinder in a coaxial cylindrical duct, immersed in inviscid flow. The unsteady inviscid fluid-dynamic force acting on the oscillating cylinder has been estimated more rigorously by means of a spectral collocation method without simplification of governing equations. This numerical approach is applicable to the system haying wider annular gap and/or shorter length of cylinder as compared to existing potential theory. The governing equation of the unsteady flow was obtained from Laplace equation. The equation of cylinder motion coupled with the fluid motion was discretized by Galerkin's method, from which the dynamic behaviour of the system has been evaluated. The effect of the length of the cylinder and the annular gap on the critical flour velocity, where the system loses stability by buckling, was investigated. To validate the numerical method, the potential flow theory developed by Hobson based on thin film approximation has been improved. Typical results of the present numerical theory on the dynamics and stability of the system are compared with those of available existing theory and the present approximate results. Good agreement was found between the results. It was also found that a nondimensional critical flow velocity becomes larger as increasing the annular gap and decreasing the length of cylinder.

Effects of oscillatory flow upon heat transfer characteristics have been studied experimentally for oscillating flow in a circular tube. The experimental apparatus was designed to simulate the heat exchangers of the Stirling or Vuilleumier cycle machines and the test section consists of heater and cooler. Measurements were presented of heat flux, axial wall temperature distribution, and radial temperature profile of the working fluid for several cases of oscillation frequency and swept distance ratio. The influences of two main parameters, frequency and tidal displacement of the oscillation were investigated. Then the heat transfer coefficient at the heater is obtained. The carried by the authors with a assumption of oscillatory laminar slug flow.

The source and source/dipole distribution methods using 3-dimensional panel method have been widely used for ship motion analysis. When these methods are used, large errors in the predicted hydrodynamic coefficients are introduced around the irregular frequencies caused by the resonance of imaginary internal flow. Therefore, the irregular frequencies need to be removed for an accurate prediction of ship motion. This paper adopts 3-dimensional translating and oscillating Green function derived by Wu. The adaptive integration method, stretching transform and stationary phase method are used for the calculation of the calculation of Green function and the integral equation is derived by distributing the Green function n ship surface and inner free-surface. The condition of zero normal velocity, that is, wall condition on inner free-surface has been successfully used for the removal of irregular frequencies in oscillating problems. The calculations are carried out for series 60($C_B=0.7$) vessel and the results are compared with those of other theoretical analyses and experiment.
In marine environments, plastics have become more abundant due to increasing plastic use. Especially, in coastal regions, particles may remain for a long time, and they interact with flows, wind, sand and human activities. This study aimed thus to observe how plastic debris interacts with and escape from sediments. A series of experiments were conducted in order to gain a better understanding of particle release from coastal sediments into water body. An oscillating water tunnel was built for the experiments, and used to generate oscillatory flows of relatively high Reynolds number and induce sediment transport. Spherical plastic particles of three different sizes was used in lieu of plastic debris in environments. It was observed that release of the particles was directly related to change of bedform, which is in turn determined by the flow condition. Also smaller particles tend to escape the sediment more readily. Critical values for dimensionless parameters are proposed.

A strong combustion-driven sound from a surface burner made of a perforated metal fiber plate for premixed gas was investigated to clarify the physical mechanism of its generation. A simple model was developed for the acoustic power generation in terms of the heat transfer response function and the acoustic impedance of the burner. The acoustic impedance of the perforated metal fiber placed on the open exit was measured and the heat release response of the burner to the oscillating flow associated with the acoustic disturbance was expressed in terms of a response function. It was found that the power is generated by the heat release in response to the downstream particle velocity, in contrast to the upstream velocity in the case of the Rijke oscillation driven by a heater placed in the lower half of a columm with upstream flow. The measured frequencies of the oscillation were in agreement with the estimated resonance frequencies and their excitation was varied with the combustion conditions. For the same fuel rate, the excited frequency increases with the air ratio if it is low but decreases with the ratio if not so low. Such frequency characteristics were explained by assuming a heat release response function with a time constant and it was shown that the excited frequency decreases as the time constant increases.

In the Present Study, a 3-D viscous flow solver, based on unstructured hybrid meshses containing tetrahedra, prisms and pyramids, has been developed. A finite-volume discretization scheme is used for solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. A cell-vertex median dual volume is used for spatial discretization. The one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to evaluate the eddy viscosity. Validation were made by computing laminar and turbulent flows around a 3-D wing for steady flows and turbulent flows around an oscillating 3-D wing in harmonic motion for unsteady flows.
The flow past a circular cylinder forced to vibrate transversely is numerically simulated by solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations modified by the vibration velocity of a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 164. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial discretization along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The calculated cylinder vibration frequency is between 0.60 and 1.30 times of the natural vortex-shedding frequency. The calculated oscillation amplitude extends to 25% of the cylinder diameter and in the case of the lock-in region it is 60%. It is made clear that the cylinder oscillation has influence on the wake pattern, the time histories of the drag and lift forces, power spectral density and phase diagrams, etc. It is found that these results include both the periodic (lock-in) and the quasi-periodic (non-lock-in) state. The vortex shedding frequency equals the driving frequency in the lock-in region but is independent in the non-lock-in region. The mean drag and the maximum lift coefficient increase with the increase of the forcing amplitude in the lock-in state. The lock-in boundaries are also established from the present direct numerical simulation.
