We describe a neural stimulator front-end with arbitrary stimulation waveform generator and adaptive supply regulator (ASR) for visual prosthesis. Each pixel circuit generates arbitrary current waveform with 5 bit programmable amplitude. The ASR provides the internal supply voltage regulated to the minimum required voltage for stimulation. The prototype is implemented in $0.35{\mu}m$ CMOS with HV option and occupies $2.94mm^2$ including I/Os.
The nervous tissue in the cerebral ganglion of Korean planaria was observed using electron microscope. The obtained results are as follows: A cerebral ganglion is composed of the nerve cells, neurosecretory cells, neuroglial cells and neuropils. The nerve cells are round or ovoidal-shaped cells (diameter, $5{\mu}m$), which has a large ellipsoidal nucleus containing the evenly developed heterochromatin. Their cytoplasms were found to be relatively simple, because of their undeveloped cell organelles. The neurosecretory cells are long and ellipsoid or spindle-shaped cells, where there were found a large ellipsoidal nucleus and cytoplasm filled with secretory granules (diameter, 60 nm). The neuroglial cells were seldom observed. They are spindle-shaped cells (size, $6\times0.8{\mu}m$), which were observed mainly among the nerve fibers. The neuropils are formed by the nerve fibers and nerve endings which are filled with mitochondria, neurotubules and secretory granules of four kinds (high electron dense granules of sizes 75 nm, 50 nm and 37 nm, and electron lucent granule of size 30 nm etc.). These granular vesicles are divided into single vesicle type and compound vesicle type in the nerve terminals, and neuronal synapses were observed to be the axo-dendritic and dendro-dendritic synapse type.

This paper describes the Model-Based Development(MBD) process behind the flight control software of a close-range unmanned aerial vehicle(KUS-9). An integrated development environment was created using a commercial tool(MATLAB $Simulink^{(R)}$), which was utilized to design models for linear/nonlinear simulation, flight control law, operational logic and HILS(Hardware In the Loop Simulation) system. Software requirements were validated through flight simulations and peer reviews during the design process, whereas the models were verified through the application of a DO-178B verification tool. The integrity of automatically generated C code was verified by using a separate S/W testing tool. The finished software product was embedded on two different types of hardware and real-time operating system(uC/OS-II, VxWorks) to perform HILS and flight tests. The key findings of this study are that MBD Technology enables the development of a reusable and an extensible software product and auto-code generation technology allows the production of a highly reliable flight control software under a compressed time schedule.
The objectives of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the ${\mu}TBS$ (microtensile bond strength) to dentin with four different adhesive systems to examine the bonding durability. Freshly extracted $3^{rd}$ molar teeth were exposed occlusal dentin surfaces, and randomly distributed into 8 adhesive groups 3-steps total-etching (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus; SM, All Bond-2; AB), 2-steps total-etching (Single Bond; SB, One Step plus; OS), 2-steps self-etching (Clearfil SE Bond; SE, AdheSE AD) and single-step self-etching systems (Promp L-Pop; PL, Xeno III; XE) Each adhesive system in 8 adhesives groups was applied on prepared dentin surface as an instruction and resin composite (Z250) was placed incrementally and light-cured. The bonded specimens were sectioned with low-speed diamond saw to obtain $1\times1mm$ sticks after 24 hours of storage at $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water and proceeded thermocycling at the pre-determined cycles of 0, 1,000 and 2,000. The ${\mu}TBS$ test was carried out with EZ-tester at 1mm/min. The results of bond strength test were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA/ Duncan's test at the a < 0.05 confidence level. Also, the fracture mode of debonded surface and the interface were examined under SEM. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. 3-step total etching adhesives showed stable, but bond strength of 2-step adhesives were decreased as thermocycling stress. 2. SE showed the highest bond strength, but single step adhesives (PL, XE) had the lowest value both before and after thermocycling. 3 Most of adhesives showed adhesive failure. The total-etching systems were prone to adhesive failure and the single-step systems were mixed failure after thermocycling. Within limited results of this study, the bond strength of adhesive system was material specific and the bonding durability was affected by the bonding step/ procedure of adhesive Simplified bonding procedures do not necessarily imply improved bonding performance.
Objective: The objective of this study was to identify clinical predictive factors for tumor response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Methods: All factors were evaluated in 88 patients with LARC treated with nCRT. After a long period of 4-8 weeks of chemoradiotherapy, 3 patients achieved clinical complete response (cCR) and thus aggressive surgery was avoided, and the remaining 85 patients underwent a curative-intent operation. The response to nCRT was evaluated by tumor regression grade (TRG) system. Results: There were 32 patients (36.4%) with good tumor regression (TRG 3-4) and 56 (63.6%) with poor tumor regression (TRG 0-2). Lymphocyte counts and ratios were higher in good response cases (P=0.01, 0.03, respectively) while neutrophil ratios and N/L ratios were higher in poor response cases (P=0.04, 0.02, respectively). High lymphocyte ratios before nCRT and good tumor regression (TRG3-4) were significantly associated with improved 5-year disease-free survival (P<0.05). Pretreatment nodal status was also significantly associated with 5-year disease-free survival and 5-year overall survival (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis confirmed that the pretreatment lymphocyte ratio and lymph nodal status were independent prognostic factors. Conclusion: Our study suggested that LARC patients with high lymphocyte ratios before nCRT would have good tumor response and high 5-year DFS and OS.

Korean red ginseng has been shown to possess a variety of biological activities. However, little is known about antiviral activity of ginsenosides of Korean red ginseng. Here, we investigated the protective effect by oral administration of various ginsenosides on the lethal infection of haemagglutinating virus of Japan (HVJ) in mice. In a lethal infection model in which almost all mice infected with HVJ died within 15 days, the mice were administered orally (per os) with 1 mg/mouse of dammarane-type (ginsenoside-Rb1, -Rb2, -Rd, -Re, and -Rg2) or oleanolic acid-type (ginsenoside-Ro) ginsenosides 3, 2, and 1 d before virus infection. Ginsenoside-Rb2 showed the highest protective activity, although other dammarane-type and oleanolic acid-type ginsenosides also induced a significant protection against HVJ. However, neither the consecutive administration with a lower dosage (300 ${\mu}g$/mouse) nor the single administration of ginsenoside-Rb2 (1 mg/mouse) was active. In comparison of the protective activity between ginsenoside-Rb2 and its two hydrolytic products [20(S)- and 20(R)-ginsenoside-Rg3], 20(S)-ginsenoside-Rg3, but not 20(R)-ginsenoside-Rg3, elicited a partial protection against HVJ. The protective effect of ginsenoside-Rb2 and 20(S)-ginsenoside-Rg3 on HVJ infection was confirmed by the reduction of virus titers in the lungs of HVJ-infected mice. These results suggest that ginsenoside-Rb2 is the most effective among ginsenosides from red ginseng to prevent the lethal infection of HVJ, so that this ginsenoside is a promising candidate as a mucosal immunoadjuvant to enhance antiviral activity.

Advances in low-cost wireless sensing have made instrumentation of large civil infrastructure systems with dense arrays of wireless sensors possible. A critical issue with regard to effective use of the information harvested from these sensors is synchronized sensing. Although a number of synchronization methods have been developed, most provide only clock synchronization. Synchronized sensing requires not only clock synchronization among wireless nodes, but also synchronization of the data. Existing synchronization protocols are generally limited to networks of modest size in which all sensor nodes are within a limited distance from a central base station. The scale of civil infrastructure is often too large to be covered by a single wireless sensor network. Multiple independent networks have been installed, and post-facto synchronization schemes have been developed and applied with some success. In this paper, we present a new approach to achieving synchronized sensing among multiple networks using the Pulse-Per-Second signals from low-cost GPS receivers. The method is implemented and verified on the Imote2 sensor platform using TinyOS to achieve $50{\mu}s$ synchronization accuracy of the measured data for multiple networks. These results demonstrate that the proposed approach is highly-scalable, realizing precise synchronized sensing that is necessary for effective structural health monitoring.

Objectives: Granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilized bone marrow (BM)-derived hematopoietic stem cells could contribute to improvement of liver function. In addition, liver fibrosis can reportedly be prevented by the Rg 1 component of red ginseng. This study investigated the combined effect of G-CSF and red ginseng on decompensated liver cirrhosis. Methods: Four patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis were injected with G-CSF to proliferate BM stem cells for 4 days ($5{\mu}g/kg$ bid subcutaneously) and followed-up for 3 months. The patients also received red ginseng for 4 days (2 tablets tid per os). We analyzed Child-Pugh scores, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores and cirrhotic complications. Results: All patients showed marked increases in White blood cell (WBC) and CD34+ cells in the peripheral blood, with a peak time of 4 days after G-CSF injection. Spleen size also increased after G-CSF injection, but not severely. At end of the study, 2 patients showed improvement in Child-Pugh scores, hepatic encephalopathy, and refractory ascites. During the clinical trial period, none of the 4 patients showed any other adverse events or deterioration of liver function. Conclusions: We conclude that G-CSF/red ginseng combination therapy is relatively effective in improving liver function and major complications of decompensated liver cirrhosis without adverse effects. Further clinical trials are warranted to assess the clinical effects of G-CSF for decompensated liver cirrhosis.
The present study was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of puerariae Radix methanol extract on benzo(a) pyrene(B(a)P) - induced liver injuries in rats. In vitro experiment, primary cultured hepatocytes (5X105 cells/$m\ell$) were cultured for 20~24 hours after adding puerariae Radix mehtanol extract(32$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) and B(a)P(50 uM). In vivo experiment, Puerariae Radix methanol extract(0.25 g/kg/day, per os) was administered for 7 days and B(a)P(0.1 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally) was given after the last administration of extract. And then the hepatoprotective effect of Puerariae Radix methanol extract was investigated biochemically through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Namely, activities of enzymes (GOT, GPT and LDH) were measured and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay were carried out in vitro cell culture study and GOT, GPT, LDH and ALP activities and HDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglyceride contents were performed in vivo study. In vitro experiment, as a result of enzyme activity measurement(GOT, GPT and LDH) and MTT assay, GOT,GPT and LDH activities changed by B(a)P were recovered to normal levels and hepatocytes impaired by B(a)P were recovered to normal. In vivo experiment, Puerariae Radix methanol extract significantly decreased the enzyme activities(GOT, GPT, ALP and LDH in serum and GPT and ALP in tissue) and lipid contents in comparison to B(a)P-treated group.
Kinetin(KN) is an inducer of rice(Oryza sativa L.) defense/stress responses, as evidenced by the induction of inducible secondary metabolite and defense/stress protein markers in leaf. We show a novel light-dependent effect of KN-triggered defense stress responses in rice leaf. Leaf segments treated with KN(100 ${\mu}M$) show hypersensitive-like necrotic lesion formation only under continuous light illumination. Potent accumulation of two phytoalexins, sakuranetin and momilactone A(MoA) by KN that peaks at 48 h after treatment under continuous light is completely suppressed by incubation under continuous dark. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis we identified KN-induced changes in ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, energy- and pathogenesis-related proteins(OsPR class 5 and 10 members) by N-terminal amino acid sequencing and mass spectrometry. These changes were light-inducible and could not be observed in the dark(and control). Present results provide a new dimension(light modulation/regulation) to our finding that KN has a potential role in the rice plant self-defense mechanism.
