  • Recently, a multi-core system is studied for single terminal's operations on various service networks for mobile systems. Therefore, it is expected that mobile systems capable of supporting WCDMA, GSM, and WiBro would be developed. Mobile systems for supporting various service networks is able to be implemented on a single chipset via SoC(System on Chip) technology, thus a noble modem design proper for SoC technology is necessary. As those systems shall be operated at different frequency band with only a single terminal, a problem that a nonlinear characteristic according to the system and its frequency band is occurred. In this paper a noble modem design for multi-core systems is proposed and the nonlinear characteristics for those systems is analysed. The proposed modem design is based on OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and MC-CDMA scheme. And nonlinear characteristic analysis is done by PSD measurement.

  • Next generation wireless communication systems require RF transceivers that enable multiband/multimode operations. Polar transmitters are known as good candidates for high data rate systems such as EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) because they can obtain high efficiency by using efficient switched-mode RF power amplifiers. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a simple peak windowing scheme for the OFDM (Orthogonal frequency Division Multiplexing) polar transmitter, which requires no change of a receiver structure or no additional information transmission. The approach we employed is to apply the peak windowing scheme to the amplitude modulated signals of the polar transmitter to reduce the PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio). The BER (Bit Error Rate) and EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) performances are measured for various window types and lengths. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm mitigates out-of-band distortion introduced by clipping along with PAPR reduction.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) that is very useful for the high-speed communication system has serious problem of high peak-to-average power ratio(PAPR) in time domain. Because of this, the non-linear distortion can be produced and system performance gets worse. CI-OFDM system can get the peak power lowered. In this CI-OFDM system, each parallel data is distributed into N all sub-carriers and conveyed by the orthogonal phase factor. Also, CI-OFDM shows frequency diversity effect. Therefore, CI-OFDM system is better than ordinary OFDM system in terms of BER performance and the PAPR reduction. When it is implemented, however, there is a serious problem whether it can separate and compensate the phase factor in order in the receiver. Because all bits are transmitted simultaneously over all subcarriers and each other phase factors in transmitter. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a FD-CI-OFDM system that is a version of improved CI-OFDM. This is designed by use of the Walsh Hadamard sequence. The FD-CI-OFDM shows better performance than ordinary OFDM and CI-OFDM system.

  • Although 32-bit architectures are becoming the norm for modern microprocessors, 16-bit ones are still employed by many low-end processors, for which small size and low power consumption are of high priority. However, 16-bit architectures have a critical disadvantage for embedded processors that they do not provide enough encoding space to add special instructions coined for certain applications. To overcome this, many existing architectures adopt non-orthogonal, irregular instruction sets to accommodate a variety of unusual addressing modes. In general, these non-orthogonal architectures are regarded compiler-unfriendly as they tend to requires extremely sophisticated compiler techniques for optimal code generation. To address this issue, we proposed a compiler-friendly processor with a new addressing mode, called the dynamic implied addressing mode(DIAM). In this paper, we will demonstrate that the DIAM provides more encoding space for our 16-bit processor so that we are able to support more instructions specially customized for our applications. And we will explain the advanced architecture which has improved performance. In our experiment, the proposed architecture shows 11.6% performance increase on average, as compared to the basic architecture.

  • The orthogonal pair of Saccharomyces cerevisiae tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (Sc YRS) and a variant of E. coli initiator tRNA, fMam $tRNA_{CUA}$ which recognizes the amber stop codon is an effective tool for site-specific incorporation of unnatural amino acids into the protein in E. coli. To evolve the amber suppression activity of the orthogonal pair, we generated a mutant library of Sc YRS by randomizing two amino acids at 320 and 321 which involve recognition of the first base of anticodon in fMam $tRNA_{CUA}$. Two positive clones are selected from the library screening with chloramphenicol resistance mediated by amber suppression. They showed growth resistance against high concentration of chloramphenicol and their $IC_{50}$ values were approximately 1.7~2.3 fold higher than the wild type YRS. In vivo amber suppression assay reveals that mutant YRS-3 (mYRS-3) clone containing amino acid substitutions of P320A and D321A showed 6.5-fold higher activity of amber suppression compared with the wild type. In addition, in vitro aminoacylation kinetics of mYRS-3 also showed approximately 7-fold higher activity than the wild type, and the enhancement was mainly due to the increase of tRNA binding affinity. These results demonstrate that optimization of anticodon recognition by engineered aminoacyl tRNA synthetase improves the efficiency of unnatural amino acid incorporation in response to nonsense codon.

  • In this paper, we analyze the symbol error rate (SER) performance of maximum likelihood (ML) joint detection in downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems by deriving a tight union bound on the symbol error rate (SER). The union bound for ML joint detection is utilized to demonstrate the performance of MIMO MC-CDMA systems quantitatively in multiuser and frequency selective Rayleigh fading environments. An analysis of the diversity order of the systems shows the effects of multiple users, spread subcarriers, and multiple antennas on the ML joint detection performance. Furthermore, the analysis shows that MIMO MC-CDMA systems without full loading can achieve more diversify than MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.

  • The underwater channel is known to offer poor communications channel. The channel medium is highly absorptive and the transmission bandwidth is limited. In addition, the channel is highly frequency selective; the degree of selectiveness depends on a detailed geometry of the channel. Furthermore, the response changes over time as the channel conditions affecting the response such as water temperature, sea surface wind and salinity are time-varying. The transceiver design to deal with the frequency and time selective channel, therefore, becomes very challenging. It has been known that deep fading at certain specific sub-carriers are detrimental to OFDM systems. To mitigate this negative effect, the proposed coded OFDM system employs an LDPC code based modulation. In this paper, we aim 1) to provide a detailed underwater channel model; 2) to design a robust LDPC coded OFDM system; 3) to test the proposed system under a variety of channel conditions enabled by the channel model.

  • DS-CDMA downlink distinguishes actual user by orthogonal spreading codes ,but its orthogonality may be lost by the multiple access interference(MAI) caused by the multipath channel. Therefore in this paper, we proposed the single-user receiver, which use linear channel equalizer to eliminate the interference due to multipath channel and to recover orthogonality and then use code-matched filter to detect transmitted data. Unlike existing research, which mainly assumed ideal channel information, we use pilot channel assisted methods that is a kind of transmission of a parallel reference method to estimate the channel coefficients. Especially we use guard symbols which are inserted periodically to estimate channel coefficients exactly without interference from user signal. The results show that we accepted an approximately ideal channel information and achieved excellent performance improvement using proposed receiver compared with the conventional receiver especially user populations are high.

  • Tn this paper, we evaluate the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) performance in a space-time block code (STBC) multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system using selected mapping (SLM) and partial transmit sequences (PTS) approaches. SLM and PTS methods are used to decrease the nonlinear distortion and to improve the power efficiency of the nonlinear high power amplifier(HPA) in the MIMO-OFDM system. In simulation result, when compared with the existing MIMO-OFDM system using QPSK, the PTS method reduces the PAPR about 5dB while the SLM method can reduce about 3.5 dB. Also, we find the BER performance of the MIMO-OFDM system with and without the predistorter in front of the HPA. When the predistorter is used, the input back-off (IBO) of 4 dB is required in the PTS method, and IBO of 6 dB in the SLM method to closely conform to the linear amplifier. If the method of improving the PAPR is not used, the value of IBO of 8 dB is required.

  • MC-CDMA(Multicarrier code division multiple access), which is based on a combination of OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) and CDMA(code division multiple access), has gained a lot of interests in wireless multimedia communications, as high speed data transmission is required for mobile services. MC-CDMA has many advantages for broadband high speed data transmission in multipath environment because it can offer both advantages of the CDMA and the OFDM. However, A high PAPR(peak to average power ratio) problem, which is a major drawback of OFDM, is also shown in the MC-CDMA. In this paper, we propose a new phase factor optimization scheme to reduce complexity in PTS(partial transmit sequence) to reduce PAPR. We also analyze the performance of the MC-CDMA with various PTS schemes to investigate the relations between PAPR characteristics and effect of nonlinear distortion of a high power amplifier. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed PTS scheme reduces PAPR about 0.2∼0.5 dB even with 25% reduced- complexity compared to the conventional scheme.
