Vibration analysis of a rigid body supported by in-parallel linear springs can be greatly simplified by utilizing the conditions for a plane of symmetry. The vibration modes of an oscillatory system having plane of symmetry are classified into the in-plane and out-of-plane modes. From the viewpoint of screw theory, they represent respectively the vibration axes perpendicular to the plane of symmetry and lying in the plane of symmetry. In this paper, the sets of orthogonal and mutually intersecting three springs are used as resilient support of a rigid body. The geometrical conditions for the system to have a plane of symmetry and diagonalized stiffness matrix are presented. From the orthogonality of the vibration modes with respect to the inertia matrix, the geometrical relation between the reaction wrenches and the vibration modes are derived. This geometrical relation is then used to get the cubic design equation for the design of out-of-plane modes. The numerical design example of engine mounts is presented in order to explain the suggested design technique.

A microgyroscope, which vibrates in two orthogonal axes on the substrate plane, is designed and fabricated. The shuttle mass of the vibrating gyroscope consists of two parts. The one is outer shuttle mass which vibrates in driving mode guided by four folded springs attached to anchors. And the other is inner shuttle mass which vibrates in driving mode as the outer frame does and also can vibrate in sensing mode guided by four folded springs attached to the outer shuttle mass. Due to the directions of vibrating mode, it is possible to fabricate the gyroscope with simplified process by using polysilicon on insulator structure. Fabrication processes of the microgyroscope are composed of anisotropic silicon etching by RIE, gas-phase etching (GPE) of the buried sacrificial oxide layer, metal electrode formation. An eletromechanical model of the vibrating microgyroscope was modeled and bandwidth characteristics of the gyroscope operates at DC 4V and AC 0.1V in a vacuum chamber of 100mtorr. The detection circuit consists of a discrete sense amplifier and a noise canceling circuit. Using the evaluated electromechanical model, an operating condition for high performance of the gyroscope is obtained.

In this paper the dynamic analysis of the multi-span beam on elastic foundation, which include discrete transnational and rotational springs, was performed. Furthermore, the effects of the intermediate supports were investigated. As a solution method, first the orthogonal polynomial functions which satisfy both the geometric and dynamic boundary conditions are obtained by imposing the orthogonality conditions. Then, the Galerkin's method is used to obtain the natural frequencies of the system. From numerical tests for various constraint and boundary conditions, it was found that the higher order orthogonal polynomial functions obtained by the present method can be used to get the accurate solution.
In this study, we present a research method to develop a shoe that prevents foot injury by inducing the foot pressure. An orthogonal grid sensor was used to check the foot pressure in the upright standing position, and the change in the foot pressure distribution for various conditions was compared. We checked the conditions for distributing foot pressure efficiently by changing the spring constant of the spring inserted into the sole of the shoe and the foot pressure generated with or without the arch of the insole. In order to minimize the experimental error from the randomness of the human body's behavior, it is possible to predict through foot pressure under certain conditions through finite element analysis that simulates the pressure distribution. By checking the change of foot pressure according to the number and arrangement of springs through finite element analysis, conditions were established to provide more efficient foot pressure. The result can be used for designing footwear for patients with diabetic feet.
The linear actuator has the inherent drawback of air gap variation because its linear motion is usually guided by the springs, which destabilizes the dynamic performance. In order to design the linear actuator to be insensitive to air gap, this paper describes the robust design of the air compressor driving linear actuator using Taguchi method. The orthogonal arrays are constructed with selected control factors and noise factor for minimum experiment. The control factors are thickness of inner magnet, height of upper yoke, thickness of outer magnet and thickness of lower yoke while noise factor is airgap. The finite element analysis using commercial electromagnetic analysis program "MAXWELL" are performed instead of experiment. ANOVA are performed to investigate the effects of design factors. In result, the optimal robust linear actuator which is insensitive to air gap variation is designed.

In this paper, the eigenvalue sensitivity of vehicle powertrain was investigated by analytic method. The powertrain system was considered as a rigid body with multiple engine mounts, and the engine mounts were supposed as three linear springs in three orthogonal directions. The design parameters for the sensitivity analysis were engine mount properties (positions, stiffness, and orientations) and powertrain properties (mass, second moment of inertia, and center of gravity). Firstly, an effective form of eigenvalue problem for the powertrain system was introduced. Then, the analytic sensitivity of eigenvalue was derived using the equation. Lastly, the derived sensitivity equation was applied to a real powertrain system to provide its correctness and applicability.

This paper presents a procedure for analysis and design of a fine positioning stage, which has many applications in industries for machine tools, semiconductor, LCD and so forth. The stage considered here is based on a single module with 3 axes which is composed of flexures hinges, piezoelectric actuators and their peripherals. Through a series of analysis, the structural analysis model is simplified as a rigid body(the moving part) and springs(the flexures hinges). An experimental design procedure is applied to determine the dimension of flexures hinges. A sensitivity analysis on the notch positions is also performed to obtain a guideline of fabrication accuracy for the stage. An actual fine stage is made and verified through an experiment on the dynamic characteristics.
A bi-directional tuned mass damper (BTMD) in which a mass connected by two translational springs and two viscous dampers in two orthogonal directions has been introduced to control coupled lateral and torsional vibrations of asymmetric building. An efficient control strategy has been presented in this context to control displacements as well as acceleration responses of asymmetric buildings having asymmetry in both plan and elevation. The building is idealized as a simplified 3D model with two translational and a rotational degrees of freedom for each floor. The principles of rigid body transformation have been incorporated to account for eccentricity between center of mass and center of rigidity. The effective and robust design of BTMD for controlling the vibrations in structures has been presented. The redundancy of optimum design has been checked. Non dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) has been used for tuning optimum stages and locations of BTMDs and its parameters for control of vibration of seismically excited buildings. The optimal locations have been observed to be reasonably compact and practically implementable.

In the present work a three degree of freedom modeling of a cylindrical rubber element is studied and its applications to an engine mount system are discussed using a simple test structure. The three degree of freedom model for the rubber mount is composed of three mutually orthogonal springs and dampers jointed at the elastic center of the mount. The test structure is designed and manufactured so simple that its mass center and moment of inertia are accurately and easily obtained. The dynamic properties of each rubber mount, i.e., complex stiffnesses, are experimentally identified using hydraulic exciter and used to predict the modal parameters of the test structure mount system by analytical modal analysis. The predicted modal parameters of the system agree well with those estimated by experimental modal analysis. Hence the three DOF model of the rubber mount is proposed for the practical design of an engine mount system.

This paper presents a design of a tuned liquid mass damper(TLMD) for controlling bi-directional response of high-rise building structure subjected to windload. The proposed damper behaves as a tuned mass damper(TMD) of which mass is regarded as the mass of a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) and the case wall of the TLCD itself in one direction and the TLCD in the other direction. Because the proposed device has coupled design parameter along two orthogonal directions, it is very important to select designing components by optimal fine tuning. In the designing TLMD, for easy maintenance, the rubber-bearing with small springs was applied in TMD direction. In this study, the Songdo New City Tower 1A in Korea, which has been designed and constructed two TLCDs in order to control bi-directional response, was chosen as the model building structure. The results of rotation test proved the effectiveness of bi-directional behavior of TLMD.
