The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the craniofacial skeleton subsequent to chincap therapy in the juvenile skeletal Class III malocclusion with more appropriate control samples. The experimental group consisted of 29 Korean children(14 males, 15 females) who had skeletal Class III malocclusion with prognathic mandible and were undergone chincap thorny from the beginning of treatment. The control group was composed of 21 Korean children(10 males, 11 females) who had no orthodontic treatment, but with similar skeletal discrepancies to experimental group. Lateral cephalometric radiographs at the age of 7, and 2 years later were analyized and compared with student's t-test(p<0.05). The results of this study were as follows; 1. The control group without chincap therapy had not shown any improvement of the skeletal discrepancies, but had grown to be much severe. This means that the untreated Class III patient with prognathic mandible would not be corrected by growth. For the experimental group with chincap therapy, the anterior-posterior skeletal discrepancies and mandibular prognathism were both improved. 2. Neither significant restraint nor acceleration of growth was found in the cranial base and maxilla by chincap treatment. 3. The inhibition of mandibular growth could not be accepted, but the changes of the direction of growth and morphological changes were found. 4. Vertical growth tendency was increased with chincap therapy. 5. When Putting together the results of the analyses , it seems to be the rotation and displacement of the mandible that the major treatment effects of chincap we. The changes of the direction of growth and the morphological changes also seems to contibute to the treatment effect partly. In summary, the chincap doesn't restrain the mandibular growth. But, it is considered as a useful treatment modality for correction of skeletal discrepancies and reduction of mandibular prognathism in growing Class III patients with madibular prognathism.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine differences of mandibular anterior alveolar bone thickness and symphysial cross sectional area in 9 different horizontal and vertical facial types. Methods: By using the initial cephalometric radiographs of 270 adult patients (male 135, female 135), the authors measured the buccolingual thickness of anterior alveolar bone on the basis of the root axis and symphysial cross sectional distance. Results: The high angle group showed significantly thinner buccolingual alveolar bone width except for the CEJ area and lingual alveolar bone width ($p$ < 0.05). The low angle group and Class I, II average group showed similar or significantly thicker alveolar bone width than the Class I average group ($p$ < 0.05). The Class III average group showed significantly thinner buccolingual and lingual alveolar bone width than Class I and II average groups ($p$ < 0.05). The Class III high angle group showed minimal alveolar bone width in all facial skeletal types. No significant difference was found in the symphysial cross sectional area of the different vertical facial skeletal types ($p$ > 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study found that Class III high angle patients have thinner mandibular anterior alveolar bone thickness; therefore, more attention will be needed to determine the incisor position during orthodontic treatment for this group of patients.

Freeman-Sheldon Syndrome (FSS, also known as "Whistling Face Syndrome") is a rare genetic condition which characteristically includes a small "whistling" mouth, a flat mask-like face, club feet, joint contractures usually involving the fingers and hands, and under-development of the cartilage of the nose. Intelligence is usually normal. Most of the features of this syndrome are due to muscle weakness. The patient, 11 years old boy was consulted from pediatrics to pediatric dentistry due to dental management. After clinical & radiographic examinations, severe multiple problems were found. Dental problems were microsomia(whistling mouth) & micrognathia, perioral muscle contracture, restricted mouth opening, poor oral hygiene & care, generalized dental caries, high palatal vault, severe malocclusion & crowding. And Orthopedic problems, ophthalmic & respiratory, anesthetic problems were found. Then He also had psychiatric problem, hospital(dental) phobia due to previous medical history(frequent hospitalization). And he had genital problem, cryptochidism, too. Due to these intricate problems, he suffered with feeding, swallowing difficulties and showed growth retardation. For enhancing patient's oral health, pediatric dentist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, pediatrician, psychiatrist, orthopedist, they all agree with early, cautious intervention and treatment. So, he has been treated by multidisciplinary care, now he is recovering general health maintenance.

Patients with maxillary hypoplasia secondary to cleft lip and palate present numerous challenging problems for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, These patients present with maxillary hypoplasia in multiclimensions, and often have thin or structually weak bone. This deformity has been traditionally corrected by Le Fort I osteotomy and acute skeletal advancement with wide surgical exposure. The long-term results of cleft patients with maxillary deficiency treated with this traditional approach has been sometimes disappointing, and an increased relapse tendency has been reported, Distraction osteogenesis for these cleft patients offers successful results while potentially minimizing the risk of relapse. Advancing the maxilla via distraction forces requires only a minor surgical procedure that maintains vascularity and neurosensory integrity. Moreover, the response of the facial soft tissues during maxillary distraction has proven to be more favorable than with a conventional LeFort I osteotomy. The purpose of this report is to present the use of maxillary distraction osteogenesis by rigid external distraction (RED) system for the treatment of patient with maxillary deficiency secondary to cleft lip and palate.

The purpose of this study is to understand anxiety in patients undergoing third molar extraction and care patients of third molar extraction. The subjects in the study were Sixty-three patients who visited the department of dentistry at Pusan Paik Hospital from May 2006 to September 2006 and who underwent third molar extraction. Patients' anxiety(state anxiety and trait anxiety) to use Spielberger's state-trait anxiety inventory(STAI) were measured. They were asked to fill out STAI question paper immediately before third molar extraction(pre-extraction) and on the day after the extraction(post-extraction). And visual analog scale(VAS) to measure patient's postoperative pain on the day after extraction(postextraction day) was used. Then Differences in anxiety before and after extraction, between men and women, between the first and second extraction, with impacted versus non impacted third molar extraction, between extraction time and anxiety, and between postoperative pain and anxiety were evaluated. The anxiety status of patients undergoing third molar extraction could be quantitatively evaluated using the STAI-KYZ. There were significant difference before and after third molar extraction. Especially women and patients of more severe postoperative pain was more anxious. We need to alleviate patient's anxiety(especially women) and to control postoperative pain throughout the tooth removal process.

Orthodontic treatment is obviously the first choice to get aligned teeth cause of conservative treatment. But it is impossible to get highly esthetic result only orthodontic treatment in case of peg lateralis, discrepancy tooth size, discolored teeth or fractured teeth. As all treatment does, especially in esthetic treatment it is always required interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment plan; orthodontics, periodontology, prothetics, implant therapy. As also, the treatment should be maintained long-term treatment with stable and harmonious state by esthetic satisfaction and functional occlusion those who needs various dental care as interdisciplinary treatment. This case is the laminate treatment with the orthodontic treatment on 37 ages/ Female patient who has cross bite at anteriors and premolar area and abrasion on centralis at right maxilla. By orthodontic treatment aligned teeth positions, it makes functional occlusion. As laminate treatment with minimum teeth preparation is able to release anterior esthetics. Follow up check for 2 years has been performed since the final prosthetics delivery to the patient. No sign of relapse, fracture of laminate were detected.

Objectives: The concept of natural head position (NHP) was first introduced by Broca in 1862, and was described as a person's stable physiologic position "when a man is standing and his visual axis is horizontal." NHP has been used routinely for clinical examination; however, a patient's head position is random during cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) acquisition. To solve this problem, we developed an accelerometer to record patients' NHP and reproduce them for CBCT images. In this study, we also tested the accuracy and reproducibility of our accelerometer. Materials and Methods: A total of 15 subjects participated in this study. We invented an accelerometer that measured acceleration on three axes and that could record roll and pitch calculations. Recorded roll and pitch data for each NHP were applied to a reoriented virtual image using three-dimensional (3D) imaging software. The data between the 3D models and the clinical photos were statistically analyzed side by side. Paired t-tests were used to statistically analyze the measurements. Results: The average difference in the angles between the clinical photograph and the 3D model was $0.04^{\circ}$ for roll and $0.29^{\circ}$ for pitch. The paired t-tests for the roll data (P=0.781) and the pitch data (P=0.169) showed no significant difference between the clinical photographs and the 3D model (P>0.05). Conclusion: By overcoming the limitations of previous NHP-recording techniques, our new method can accurately record patient NHP in a time-efficient manner. Our method can also accurately transfer the NHP to a 3D virtual model.
Objectives: This study analyzed the perception towards clinical practice education content held by dental hygiene students in dental institutions and their perceived importance of dental hygienists' clinical duties. Methods: The subjects of this study were 182 dental hygienists who were working at dental institutions in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong areas. A survey was conducted with a self-administered questionnaire. In the questionnaire, the clinical practice contents were classified into observation, preparation, and performance, and the importance of clinical duty was measured with a 3-point scale. For the clinical practice contents and the importance of duty, descriptive statistics and chi-square test were performed, and the study results were analyzed using STATA 11.0. Results: With regard to clinical practice contents, observation was mainly performed in oral & maxillofacilal radiology, preventive dentistry, periodontal medicine and oral medicine. In primary care and infection control, practice and observation were mainly performed. In the department of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry, observation and preparation were mainly conducted, while in oral surgery, conservative dentistry observation, preparation and practice were all conducted. With regard to clinical practice contents according to the dental institution, there were statistically significant differences in the type of dental institution and the duty (p>0.05). In terms of the importance of dental hygienist's duty, infection control, toothbrushing education for each patient, removal of plaque, and patient education after surgery were considered important. Conclusions: For clinical practice of the dental hygiene department, the education contents should be standardized in accordance with the importance of the dental hygienist's duty, a protocol for operation of practice should be developed, and a method of standardization of evaluation should be sought in the future.
Objective: This study aimed to establish the prevalence and patterns of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis in patients referred to a tertiary health care facility. Methods: The intraoral records and panoramic radiographs of 9,874 patients aged 12-22 years were evaluated. The study group included 716 patients (371 male, 345 female) with non-syndromic agenesis of at least one tooth (except the third molars). The study data were assessed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney U test, while patterns were evaluated using a tooth agenesis code (TAC) tool. Results: A total of 1,627 congenitally missing teeth, were found in patients with non-syndromic tooth agenesis, with an average of 2.27 missing teeth per patient. The prevalence of tooth agenesis was 7.25%, and the most commonly missing teeth were the left mandibular second premolars (10.17%). The age group comparison revealed no significant difference in the median number of missing teeth per patient according to the cutoff values for ages between 12 and 22 years. When the missing teeth were examined separately according to quadrants, 114 different tooth agenesis patterns (upper right quadrant = 28, upper left quadrant = 27, lower left quadrant = 31, and lower right quadrant = 28) were identified, and 81 of these patterns appeared only once. Conclusions: This study highlights the benefits of applying the TAC tool in a large sample population. The application of the TAC tool in such studies will enable the development of template treatment plans by determining homogenous patterns of tooth agenesis in certain populations.
To investigate the perceptions and attitudes of dental hygienists toward radiation safety management in Korea. A total of 800 dental hygienists were randomly selected for an anonymous survey, and 203 of them participated. The questionnaire items included the following: sex, career period, type of installed radiographic equipment, recognition of the diagnostic reference level (DRL), participation in radiation safety education, and attitudes toward radiation protection for both patients and dental hygienists. The participants were divided into two groups according to their years of experience (< 10 years versus ≥ 10 years). The difference between the groups was investigated according to frequency distribution. Fisher's exact test or Pearson's chi-square (𝛘2) test was used as appropriate. A regression analysis was performed to investigate the impact of wearing a thyroid collar for personnel protection during patient radiation exposure. The types of installed radiographic equipment included panoramic radiography (96.1%), cephalometric radiography (76.9%), intraoral radiography (72.9%), and cone-beam computed tomography (69.5%). Significant differences were observed in the learning pathway for the DRL (Fisher's exact test, p < 0.05), satisfaction with radiation safety education (Pearson's 𝛘2 test = 5.3975, Pr = 0.02), and use of personnel radiation monitoring systems (Pearson's 𝛘2 test = 18.1233, Pr = 0.000) between the groups. Significant differences were also observed in personnel protection using a thyroid collar and patient protection during panoramic radiography (odds ratio = 14.2). Dental hygienists with more than 10 years of experience were more satisfied with radiation safety education and more interested in radiation monitoring. Considering career experience, customized, continuous, and effective radiation safety management education should be provided.
