  • Model Predictive Control (MPC) has recently found wide acceptance in industrial applications, but its potential has been much impounded by linear models due to the lack of a similarly accepted nonlinear modelling or data based technique. The authors have recently developed a new method for obtaining Volterra kernels of up to third order by use of pseudorandom M-sequence. By use of this method, nonparametric NMPC is derived in discrete-time using multi-dimensional convolution between plant data and Volterra kernel measurements. This approach is applied to an industrial polymerisation process using Volterra kernels of up to the third order. Results show that the nonparametric approach is very efficient and effective and considerably outperforms existing methods, while retaining the original data-based spirit and characteristics of linear MPC.

  • Five non-stratified plant communities, Dichanthium-Artemisia-Themeda, Dichanthium- Plectranthes-Themeda, Plectranthes-Carex-Myrine, Heteropogon- Dichanthium-Dodonaea and Artemisia-Cynodon-Ber-beris were recognized in Girbanr hills, District Swat, during autumn, 1992. The indices of similarity showed that the communities were dissimilar. The percentage of leptophyllous and nanophyllous, terophytic and nanophanerophytic species were higher than other groups. These indicate dry and disturben conditions. Due to autumn season most of the species were entering in dormant stage. There was no tree layer on southern slopes while northern slopes had a poor layer of Pinus roxburghii. Deforestation, uprooting, terrace cultivation and overgrazing followed by erosion are the main ecological problems. The presence of isolated trees of Pinus roxburghii and stunted Olea ferruginea indicate that the original vegetation might have been of chirpine or Olea-Pinus type. The area having resource potential can be changed into a forest or rangeland by proper protection and management. Suggestions in favour of improvement are given.

  • The pharmacognostical and pharmacological studies of 'Manryong' were carried out, which has been widely used in Chun-Ra Province, Korea and the following results were obtained. 1) The original plant of the bulb MANRYONG is Erythronium japonicum DECNE. (Liliaceae). 2) The internal structure consists of mostly parenchyma containing numerous starch grains, vascular bundles and substituted fibers. 3) The external surface occurs as a yellowish white and slightly bented ovoidal shape. 4) 'Manryong; contains 11 kinds of free amino acids, such as asparagin, tryptophan, cystine, glutamic acid, threonine, glycine, leucine, proline, histidine, methionine, and alanine. 5) Hemolytic action of the crude saponin isolated from 'Manryong' is weaker than that of digitonin. 6) Effects of 'Manryong' extracts on ceruloplasmin were studied and an antidotal activity of the extracts was found in liver intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride.

  • In continuation of studies on the Umbelliferous fruits the inner morphology of 'Kobon' fruit was examined, 'Kobon' is an original plant of Korean Gaoben, its scientific name being given Angelica tenuissima NAKAI or Ligusticum tenuissimum KITAGAWA. The arrangement of vascular bundles is the same as those of the genus Ligusticum or Tilingia and Conioselinum. The tracheids reach nearly the top of the ribs, and this is similar to that of the genus Conioselinum. From these characters and the results of studies on the inner morphology of the fruits of Umbelliferous plants related to 'Kobon,' the origin of 'Kobon' was identified as the genus Conioselinum.

  • Botanical origins of three drugs, 'Won-bangpoong,' 'Shik-bangpoong' and 'Jaezoo-bangpoong' are not certain on the present market in Korea. These three were compared with two kinds of Chinese 'bangpoong' by histology and screening tests of roots. The original plant of 'Won-bangpoong' which is domestically used is Glehnia littoralis SCHMIDT et MIQUEL 'Shik-bangpoong' Peucedanum japonicum THUNBERG and 'Jaezoo-bangpoong' Seseli coreana KITAKAWA. Chinese "bangpoong" appears to be Siler divaricatum $B_{ENTHAM}$ et Hook, being different from others. "Shik-bangpoong" is easily distinguished from others two in external morphology. Thee kinds of available "Bangpoong" are different from one another in the internal structures and in the internal structures and in the screening tests by TLC.

  • The chemical investigation on the cell suspension culture of Morinda elliptica L. yielded eight anthraquinones, two of which, anthragallol-1,2-dimethyl ether (3) and purpurin-1-methyl ether (4), have not been isolated from the original plant. Other compounds isolated include nordamnacanthal (1), alizarin-1-methyl ether (2), rubiadin (5), soranjidiol (6), $lucidin-{\omega}-methyl$ ether (7), and morindone (8). The structures of anthraquinones were established based on spectral studies.

  • From the rhizome of Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi (Compositae) which is the original plant of oriental medicine 'Cang-Zhu', four essential oil compounds were isolated. Three of them were identified as atractylon, hydroxyatractylon and $5{\alpha}H,\;10{\beta}-selina-4(14),\;7(11)-diene-8-one$, which were already known as the constitutents of Atractylodes Rhizoma. The fourth is a novel polyacetylene type compound, and the structure is postulated as 1, 4-diacetoxytetradeca-6, 12-diene-8, 10-diyne by the spectral data.

  • The Control Element Assembly(CEA) shroud is one of the most important components in the reactor vessel internals for the nuclear power plant. Because of the severe modification from its original design the structural integrity of this component has been questioned. In an attempt to resolve this question, the response of the CEA shroud to a random loading in the actual operating condition is calculated analytically and experimentally and compared to the code allowables to show that it is structurally adequate and acceptable for the long term operation.

  • A sufficent condition for the robust control of the adaptive control system is presented under the convergence of the parameters of the adaptive system. The plant in the adaptive control system is a stable system which includes the unmodelled dynamics and can be approximated by a minimum phase system. It is shown that modified structure which Kosut and Friedlander suggested satisfies the sufficient condition more easily than the original structure without modification. It is also shown by computer simulation that the modified structure and/ or the adaptation method using the normalized input and output data or filtered input and output data can improve the robustness of the adaptive control system.

  • Isoflavones are phytoestrogens and natural plant compounds which are similar to 17-${\beta}$-estradiol in chemical structure. It is known that they can act as estrogen agonists or antagonists, depending on endocrine estrogenic levels, but actions of isoflavones are rather complex due to large number of variables such as chemical structures and mechanisms. Some hypotheses on biological mechanisms have not satisfactorily been confirmed to date and human epidemiological and experimental studies have been relatively limited. Nevertheless, isoflavones and isoflavone rich foods have become a focus onf interest due to positive health benefits on many diseases, especially prevention of hormone-related cancers, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and adverse postmenopausal symptoms, and improvement of physiological condition such as maintaining cognitive function. This review provides an overview of chemistry, analytical techniques (focused on human biospecimens), functions including biological mechanisms, and effects of isoflavones, on the basis of the available meta-analysis and review articles and some original articles, on health and cancer.
