A Clinical Report of a Psychosomatic patient who has treated by Giungoroen-therapy based on Song Psychotherapy (노래 심리 치료를 활용한 지언고론요법(至言高論療法)을 적용하여 호전된 심신증(心身證)환자 1예(例) 보고)

  • Objectives : This study was performed to report the effect of Giungoroen-therapy based on song psychotherapy in the treatment resistant patient with psychosomatic disease. Methods : A 43 year-old female patient suffered from headache, facial numbness, right upper and lower limb's numbness, ptosis, chest discomfort, dysarthria without identifiable physical cause. We diagnosed her as psychosomatic disease, and tried to apply Giungoroen-therapy with Korean traditional medical treatment. But she was resistant to Giungoroen-therapy. So we applied Giungoroen-therapy based on song psychotherapy. Results : After the Giungoroen-therapy based on song psychotherapy, the patient revealed her unrecognized hidden issues and got some insights about herself. Then the symptoms, such as headache, facial numbness, right upper and lower limb's numbness, ptosis, chest discomfort and dysarthria were reduced considerably. Conclusions : These results suggest that Giungoroen-therapy based on song psychotherapy can be effective on improvement of resistant psychosomatic disease.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the Korean-medical and the Western-medical psychotherapy on PTSD for improving the Korean-medical psychotherapy on this issue. Methods: We surveyed recent articles relating to psychotherapy on the incidence of PTSD. Results: Under the circumstances of this study, we note that applying the qigong therapeutics would be helpful when conducting relaxation training on the identified PTSD patients. We understand that taking a systematic desensitization style in the use of the kyungja-pyungji treatment is recommended. It would also be more effective to combine other treatments such as the use of the I-Jeong-Byeon-Gi Therapy and the five minds mutual restriction therapy. We have shown that by using the five minds mutual restriction therapy for the imagery rescripting has a better a synergy effect for optimum patient outcomes for patients who have been diagnosed with PTSD. Conclusions: Our study has shown that by improving the shortcomings of the Korean psychotherapy and utilizing Western psychotherapy's merits, we expect to increase the efficacy of the Korean psychotherapy with these recommendations for changes in this case.

  • In this study, we treated a patient with psychogenic chronic low back pain for 2 years with herbal medication treatment and psychotherapy. The case was a 17 years old female patient complained chronic low back pain for a long time. She received the spine operation, epidural injection, many kind of oriental medicine treatment about low back pain, but there was no improvement. We diagnosed her pain as a psychogenic pain disorder, and treated her with herbal medication for decrease her stress, and did a psychotherapy such as the progressive muscle relaxation, and counseled about trouble with her family. After treatment, her chronic low back pain was improved so much. We think that the herbal medication treatment and psychotherapy can be helpful to treat patients who have psychic and physical disorders.

  • Based on the fact that obesity is a complicated disease, we must treat obesity in a holistic way, but psychological factors are usually neglected in the clinical field. Oriental Medicine is basically holistic and psychosomatic, however, there are very few psychotherapy approaches in Oriental Medical treatment. In this review Oriental Medicine psychotherapy is outlined and a new model for oriental psychotherapy for the treatment of obesity is introduced. This program has a multi dimensional approach that includes behavioral, cognitive and spiritual components. The behavioral component relates to the discipline of diet and exercise. The cognitive aspect focuses on the mind. The third and possibly the most important component deals with one's spirit and awareness of their true self. This program is called "Yangsung" which means "Finding and raising one's true self."

  • This is a case report about agoraphobia patient treated with oriental medical psychotherapy. We treated with Kyungja-pyungji(Stabilization of anxiety) treatment, Ii- Jeung-Byun-Qi(movement of emotion and degeneration of Qi) treatment, Giungoroen-Focusing(wise saying and lofty opinion) method for 8 weeks. She could not go out herself without her mother for the first teatment time, but she improved step and she could go by herself to the public place at the last time. We found out that the application of systemic oriental medical psychotherapy is effective for the agoraphobia disorder. Therefore, we presented application of oriental medical psychotherapy with bibliological research.

  • This study researches the effect of oriental psychotherapy treatments for various somatization symptoms by marital conflict. We treat Acupuncture, Herb-medication and oriental psychotherapy, and follow up the result for 3 times. Through an understanding of marital, The symptoms of the patient decreased. Oriental psychotherapy treatments is effective for Somatoform Disorders by Marital Conflict.

  • Objectives: A large number of patients require psychiatric therapy. We attempted to determine the present situation regarding psychotherapy and neuropsychological tests for dementia in Korean medicine for the benefit of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS). The aim of this study was to aware of the current status about psychotherapy and neuropsychological test for dementia in Korean medicine. Methods: We searched the medical practice records for psychotherapy and neuropsychological tests in oriental neuropsychiatry between 2009 and 2013 using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS) database. The search categories were: IJeongByunGi (Medical practice code:59001), JiUnGoRoen (59002), Kyungjapyungji (59003), OhJiSangSeung (59004), neuropsychological test for dementia (29005). Results: 1. The number of patients treated with Korean Medical Psychotherapy increased annually by 151%. The total number of patients treated with Korean Medical Psychotherapy was 4,289 in 2013. 2. The total cost for patients treated with Korean medical Psychotherapy in the public health medical insurance budget was 268,032,000 won in 2013. The average medical cost for one therapy was 17,000 won in 2013. 3. The number of patients in local clinics is increasing faster than the number in Korean medical hospitals. 4. The age group between 20~30 years of age, for both men and women, is the group with the greatest density in Korean Medical Psychotherapy. 5. Neuropsychological Testing for Dementia in Korean Medicine is slowly decreasing. Conclusions: The prevalence of mental illness in Korea is increasing, therefore, the demand for Korean Medical Psychotherapy has increased recently. Authorizing Korean Medical psychiatrists to utilize Korean mental Health resources is essential. This study could be helpful in understanding the current status for the purpose of expanding Korean Medical Psychotherapy.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical application of oriental medical therapy(OMT) and psychotherapy to a somatoform disorder patient with chronic pelycalgia and hemiparesis. Methods: We treated the patient with psychotherapy such as relaxation therapy and suggestion. OMT that we used is represented by retention enema therapy. The recovery of the pelycalgia was evaluated by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). Results: Following the treatment the patient's pelycalgia and hemiparesis was improved. The sum of VAS score was rapidly decreased(from 113 to 28). Conclusion: OMT and psychotherapy have positive effects on the patient with chronic pelycalgia and hemiparesis.

  • Objectives : Postpartum depression is a kind of serious problem which influences on the parturients, her family. In this case we tried psychotherapy to postpartum depression patient. Methods : We treated the patient with Oriental psychotherapy. And then we compared postpartum depression before treatment with on after treatment by Korean version of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale(K-EPDS). Results : After treatments, the clinical symptoms were improved and K-EPDS was reduced 16 to 6. Conclusions : Oriental psychotherapy is effective on postpartum depression.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to introduce Chinese Taoist Cognitive Psychotherapy (CTCP), a psychotherapy based on Oriental culture, and review related research to understand its efficacy.Methods Relevant articles were searched from CNKI, WANFANG, Pubmed, EMBASE, AMED and CENTRAL.Results Thirty-seven studies were selected based on our inclusion criteria, which included 31 RCTs. The overall risk of bias of the RCTs was unclear or high. In the total relevant studies, the target diseases were most commonly depression and anxiety disorder. Generally, CTCP combined with Western medicine was significantly more effective than prescribing medicine alone.Conclusions CTCP can be useful for several psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety disorder; however, more high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy.
