Objectives : A morphological classification among Sinomenium acutum, Cocculus trilobus and Aristolochia fangchi was made through microscopic observation. Method : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Result : 1. Fiber bundles of pericycle in S. acutum are like a crescent moon, stone cells were found among fiber bundles, and starch grain and raphides of calcium oxalate were included in parenchyma. 2. C. trilobus has the fiber bundle of pericycle resembling a crescent moon, but does not have the raphidesof calcium oxalate. 3. A. fangchi has the raphides of calcium oxalate, but does not have the fiber bundles of pericycle. 4. Stems and roots of S. acutum arc mostly similar, but only stems have the pith. Conclusion :' C. trilobus and A. fangchi can be distinguished from each other by the fiber bundles of pericycle and the raphides of calcium oxalate.
Objectives : In order to distinguish Akebiae Caulis and Aristoiochiae Manshuriensis Caulis, their external and internal states were examined by microscope. Methods : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Results : 1. Akebiae Caulis has stone cells and fiber bundles in its pericycle part, which include square crystal of calcium oxalate. Outside of neogenesis has a lot of cells with square crystal of calcium oxalate. 2. Aristoiochiae Manshuriensis Caulis has a little lignified fiber bundles in its pericycle part, and parenchymatous cell has delicate starch grains and druse of calcium oxalate. Conclusions : In conclusion, internal forms of Akebiae Caulis and of Aristoiochiae Manshuriensis Caulis are different in that each includes square crystal of calcium oxalate and druse of calcium oxalate respectively, so that it may be possible to distinguish them with optical microscope.
Objectives : Because Ligusticum sinense Root as well as those of Angelica tenuissima Root are sole as Gobon(藁本) in domestic markets, morphological characteristics of them are attempted to be distinguished. Methods : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Results : 1. Angelica tenuissima Root has considerable number of thick roots, but Chinese Ligusticum sinense Root and Ligusticum jeholense Root are composed of rhizomes mostly with small roots. 2. Intersection of rhizomes of Angelica tenuissima Root shows a 'V'-like arrangement of xylem vessel. 3. Chinese Ligusticum sinense Root and Ligusticum jeholense Root did not show the 'V'-like arrangement, and sliced fiber bundles were found in xylem. 4. There was no difference between Chinese Ligusticum sinense Root and Ligusticum jeholense Root. Conclusions : In conclusion, Angelica tenuissima Root, Chinese Ligusticum sinense Root, and Ligusticum jeholense Root show characteristic differences in internal forms, so that it is possible to distinguish them with optical microscope.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the correlation among body weight, body composition, delivery method, parity, weight gain during pregnancy and obesity before pregnancy of patients who received postpartum care in one oriental medicine hospital. Mothods: From September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2008, we included 34 postpartum patients who had body composition analysis when admission and discharge among 47 postpartum patients who were hospitalized and received postpartum care in $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ University $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ Hospital. We used SPSS 14.0 for window to test for statistical significance. Results: After postpartum care, body weight and BMI of mothers was significantly decreased and the weight loss was almost body water. Mothers who had cesarean section had relatively severe edema and mothers who had been overweight before pregnancy had high BMI, body fat and abdominal fat. After delivery, body fat percentage was increased highly and body weight retention lasted long in mothers who had gained over 12.5kg during pregnancy. Conclusion: Living habits including diet has a significant effect on weight change of mothers during early puerperium, therefore it is required to teach mothers about breast-feeding, diet, and exercise to help their weight return to normal.

This study evaluated the effects of Puerariae Radix on the skeletal muscle atrophy, Muscle atrophy was induced by the sciatic nerve transection in Sprague-Dawley rats, then aqueous-extract of Puerariae Radix was administered for 12 days, Muscle wet weight was measured in soleus, plantaris, and medial gastrocnemius. Muscle fiber type was classified by MHCf immunohistochemistry. Muscle fiber type proportion and cross section area of muscle fiber also was observed in medial gastrocnemius. Bax and Bcl-2 expressions in medial gastrocnemius of the damaged hind limb were evaluated with immunohistochemistry. The results are as follows; Puerariae Radix attenuated muscle atrophy in soleus of the sciatic nerve transectioned rats, but there was statistic significance. Puerariae Radix attenuated significantly atrophy in plantaris at 12 days and in medial gastrocnemius at 8 days and 12 days. Puerariae Radix improved histology of the atrophic changes and increased significantly cross section areas of type-I and type-II muscle fibers in medial gastrocnemius of the sciatic nerve transectioned rats. Puerariae Radix did not affect to muscle fiber type proportion in medial gastrocnemius of the sciatic nerve transectioned rats. Puerariae Radix attenuated significantly Bax positive nuclei but did not affect to Bcl-2 positive muscle fibers in medial gastrocnemius of the sciatic nerve transectioned rats.According to above results, Puerariae Radix may have an anti-atrophy effect on the denervated skeletal muscle through anti-apoptotic effects on muscle fibers.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to know the immunity reponse of Esubwhaltong-tang(hereafter referred to ESWTT) to rheumatoid arthrits in CIA(collagen induced arthritis) mice. Methods : For this purpose, ESWTT was orally administerd to mice with arthritis induced by collagen II and then value of immunocyte in paw joint, cytokine(IL-6, $TNF-{\alpha}$), rheumatoid factor(IgG and IgM) and collagen II specific antibody in the serum were measured. Results : 1. The cytotoxicity was not shown on hFLSs and liver. 2. Marginal erosion, necrotic chodrocytes, cartilage and bone degradation were improved in histological section of paw joints from CIA mice(ESWTT extract administration group). 3. Total cell number of paw joint in CIA mice(ESWTT extract administration group) was decreased significantly. 4. The absolute number of CD3+, CD3+/CD69+, CD4+, CD4+/CD25+, CD49b+, CD3+/CD49b+ cells in CIA mice(ESWTT extract administration group) were decreased significantly. 5. The levels of IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ in the serum of CIA mice(ESWTT extract administration group) were decreased significantly. 6. The levels of total IgG and IgM in the serum of CIA mice(ESWTT extract administration group) were decreased significantly. 7. The level of collagen II specific antibody in the serum of CIA mice(ESWTT extract administration group) was decreased significantly. Conclusions : Comparison of the results for this study showed that ESWTT had immunomodulatory effects of suppressing. So we expect that ESWTT could be used as an effective drugs for not only rheumatoid arthritis but also auto-immune disease.
There are four kinds of diagnosis methods in oriental medicine, and viewing diagnosis(望診) is the most important method among them. There are two ways in viewing diagnosis. These are viewing shape(觀形) and inspecting color(察色). Viewing shape diagnosis includes observation on geometric curve that is made by prominence of bones or lump of flesh, and examination on symmetric disparity and balance of vertical length among three vertical section of face. Inspecting color is literally inspecting several specified region of face. By Viewing shape, we can learn about characteristic physical mechanism of individuals, and basic disposition of reaction from inside and outside infinite stimulations. On the other hand, by inspecting color, we can estimate the very present pathologic and physiologic status of the patient. the estimation is based on principle that inside body changes reveal some reflections on facial skin surface. When you diagnosis patients with inspecting color method, It is important to distinguish color delicately, and to know where to see and what to know from it. The most important and frequently mentioned regions are myong-dang(明堂), eyes(眼) and In-dang(印堂). Myong-dang(明堂) indicates nose. In-dang(印堂) indicates the space between eyebrows. Unlike myong-dang(印堂) and eyes, In-dang(印堂) is occasionally treated as a trivial region then others. But, from research on classical books of facial examination and consideration of it's locational meanings, we've learned In-dang(印堂) is very important in viewing diagnosis, because this region is crossing of the other two regions and this fact means this region expresses the spiritual status as well as physical status in one region.

Objective : The aim of this study was to survey the present utilization of pattern identification(PI) in the clinical field among Korean Medicine Doctors. Method : This survey was conducted from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31, 2014 by face-to-face interview using structured questionnaire. The subjects were 400 korean medicine doctors who worked in hospitals or clinics. The questionnaire consisted of two sections - a demographics section(i.e., sex, age, clinical experience, place of work, residence and so on) and the main research section(i.e., the PI utilization rate, the utilization of PI systems, the utilization of PI in the clinical domain and in the treatment domain, the correlation between utilization PI and so on). Results : This study revealed that subjects used the PI to 66.7% of their patients on average. The utilization rate of PI in patients was significantly higher for female physicians than for male physicians, for physicians worked in clinics than for physicians who worked in hospitals and for physicians with more than 10 years clinical experience than for physicians with less than 10 years clinical experience. In the utilization of PI systems, Visceral PI was most as 92.0%. There were significant difference on the PI utilization rate according to utilization of Meridian and Collateral PI, Triple Energizer PI, Defense, Qi, Nutrient and Blood PI, Six-Meridian PI and Six Excesses PI. As a result of analysing the PI utilization rate by clinical domain and in the treatment domain, the Treatment and the Drug Treatment showed the highest values. Among utilized PI systems, the correlation coefficients between Defense, Qi, Nutrient and Blood PI and Triple Energizer PI showed the highest value, but the correlation coefficients between Sasang Constitutional Medicine with the each PI showed substantially lower value. Conclusion : The results of this study demonstrate that usage of PI was higher than usage of U code(in KCD) usage in clinical field. we suggested that additional studies on using PI and developing more appropriate standardized tool should be conducted to widen scope of PI's utilization.
