A Case Report of Korean Medicine Treatment for a Patient with Functional Abdominal Pain (한의약 치료 후 호전된 기능성 복통 환자 치험 1례)

  • Objectives: The aim of this case report was to present the effects of Korean medicine treatment in a patient with functional abdominal pain. Methods: A 24-year-old female patient was treated with Sogeonjung-tang and Gammaekdaejo-tang extract granules with acupuncture therapy. Abdominal pain and soreness were assessed daily with a numeric rating scale (NRS) Results: With 7 days of treatment, abdominal pain was relieved from NRS 7 to NRS 3. By the 6th day of treatment, abdominal soreness had disappeared. Conclusion: These results show that functional abdominal pain can be relieved with Korean medicine treatment. However, further well-designed studies are required to confirm these findings.

Korean Medical Treatment of Cognitive Impairments after Traumatic Epidural Hemorrhage: A Case Report (외상성 경막외 출혈 이후 발생한 인지장애에 대한 한방치료 1례)

  • Objectives: After epidural hemorrhage, sequelae may cause cognitive impairments, such as attention, memory, and performance disturbances. This case study reports on the use of traditional Korean medicine in a patient with cognitive impairments after a traumatic epidural hemorrhage. Methods: During the 46-day hospitalization period, traditional Korean medicine treatments, including Sunkihwalhyul-tang-gamibang, Ukgan-san-gajinpibanha Granule, Kyungohk-go, acupuncture, and cupping, were administered. The degree of cognitive impairment was measured based on the Mini Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and correct answer ratio. Results: After traditional Korean medicine treatment, the MMSE-K score increased from 13 to 19 and the MBI score increased from 63 to 71. The patient's conversations in daily life also proceeded more smoothly than before hospitalization, and the correct answer ratio rose. Conclusion: This case reports the improvement of cognitive impairment after traumatic epidural hemorrhage in response to traditional Korean medicine treatment; further study is needed.

The Characteristics of Traffic Accident Admission Patients in Oriental Medicine Hospital (한방병원에 입원한 교통사고 환자의 일반적 특성)

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to classify the TA(traffic accident) patients who admissed in Oriental Medical Hospital. Methods : We divided TA patients who admissed in Oriental Medical Hospital by age, sex, visited period after onset, impact region, disease, and chief complaint according to a patient classification table, and analyzed their characteristics. Results and Conclusion : The patients who visited within 1 week after TA numbered most(65.4%) in classification by period. Most impact region was neck(80%). Most of TA patients were suffered and treated by cervical(80%) and lumbar(56.9%) sprain.

The Clinical Study on Spinal Stenosis of Lumbar Spine (요추 척추관 협착증 환자 118례에 대한 임상적 고찰)

  • Object : These studies are designed to make a survey of the effectiveness of the non surgical oriental medicine treatment with Chuna on spinal stenosis of lumbar spine. Methods : The clinical study was done on 118 cases of patients with spinal stenosis of lumbar spine diagnosed by M.R.I, symptoms and physical test who was in the admission in Ja-Seng Oriental Medcine Hospital from October 2006 to October 2008. after treatment we checked VNRS score to estimate the efficacy of treatment. Results : 1. As a Objectivity treatment record, they test excellent 17%, good 69%, fair 8%, poor 6%. 2. The mean NRS score decreased about 3.26 after the treatment. Conclusions : Non surgical oriental medicine treatment with Chuna has on useful effect on spinal stenosis of lumbar spine.

Chunggangunbi-tang-gamibang's Effect on Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis with Ascites (청간건비탕가미방(淸肝健脾湯加味方)으로 복수(腹水)를 동반한 알코올성 간경변(肝硬變) 환자(患者) 치험 1례)

  • We applied Chunggangunbi-tang-gamibang to a 64 year-old male patient who had alcoholic liver cirrhosis with ascites. Chunggangunbi-tang-gamibang has been used to treat alcoholic liver disease and because of its beneficial effects. The patient with the disease expected several symptoms induced by Alcoholic liver cirrhosis, and we diagnosised differentiation of symptoms, using Chunggangunbi-tang-gamibang while removing dampness through diuresis and invigorating the spleen. After medication we could find remarkable effects on clinical symptoms, blood test results and abdomen ultrasonographic images. From this case, it is thought that using Chunggangunbi-tang-gamibang is very effective to improve the symptom of alcoholic liver cirrhosis with ascites.

The Clinical Effect of Drinking Habit in Acute Stroke Patients (급성기 중풍환자에서 음주습관이 중풍의 발생양상에 미치는 임상적 영향)

  • Objectives : This study investigated the clinical effect of a drinking habit in acute stroke patients. Methods : 409 acute stroke patients were included from October 2005 to October 2006. Patients were hospitalized within 14 days after the onset of stroke at DongGuk University International Hospital, Kyungwon University In-cheon Oriental Medical Hospital, or Department of Cardiovascular and Neurologic Diseases (Stroke Center), Kyung Hee University Oriental Hospital. We investigated general characteristics, drinking habit, and stroke subtype by TOAST classification. Results : Among drinking subjects, hemorrhagic stroke was more frequent than ischemic stroke (odds ratio 3.04), and less in small vessel occlusion than others (odds ratio 1.84). Ischemic stroke was associated with a longer (30 yrs) drinking habit than hemorrhagic stroke. Conclusions : To acquire more concrete conclusions on this theme, we need further and larger scale research.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to investigated the relationship between warning signs and stroke subtype in acute stroke patients. Methods : From Oct. in 2005 to Oct. in 2006, 409 acute stroke patients were included. Patients were hospitalized within 14 days after the onset of stroke in DongGuk University International Hospital, Kyungwon University In-cheon Oriental Medical Hospital, Department Cardiovascular and Neurologic Diseases(Stroke center) Kyung Hee University Oriental hospital. We investigated general characteristics, stroke subtype, and warning signs(facial spasm, neck stiffness). Results : Hemorrhagic stroke had more facial spasm than ischemic stroke. (odds ratio 3.60) Small vessel occlusion had more neck stiffness than others. (odds ratio 2.03) Conclusion : To acquire more concrete conclusions on warning signs, we need further and large scale of prospective researches.

  • ■ Objectives This clinical study is to report the effect of Korean medicine on patient with central poststroke pain. ■ Methods A patient who was treated with herbal medicine Sokyungwhalhyul-tang(SKWHT), acupuncture and moxibution. Degree of treatment was measured by Numbering Rating Scale and quality of sleep. ■ Results After taking herb medicine, acupuncture and moxibution, the patient's pain was relieved and quality of sleep was improved before treatment. ■ Conclusion This clinical case study showed the effect of Korean medicine on symptom of pain.

  • The symptoms of malaria are periodic alternting of fever and chills on every one, two or three days. The patient has a fever at the first time of malaria, feels a chill, and has muscle pain at the next time. The long cycle of malarial fever such as every 2 or 3 days means that it takes a turn for the worse. In this study, oriental medicine was taken based on the oriental medicine principle such as Gagamcheongbi-tanggami(加減淸脾湯加味方), and the patient takes a turn for the better. The purpose of this paper is to report the patient with malarial fever, a chill and muscle pain who was improved dy oriental medical treatment.

A Case Report of Chronic Gastritis in a Patient with Spinal Stenosis Hospitalized at a Korean Medicine Hospital and Treated with Korean Medicine (한방병원에 입원한 요추관협착증을 동반한 만성 위염 환자에 대한 한방 치료 1례)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the efficacy of applying Korean medical treatment to chronic gastritis. Methods: We treated a chronic gastritis patient with Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines, acupuncture, and herbal acupuncture therapy). To evaluate the results of this treatment, we took measurements using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale and Visual Analogue Scale for abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, and abdominal distension. The patient's generic health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions Scale. Results: Improvements in gastrointestinal symptom ratings and the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions Scale were observed after the treatments. Relief of symptoms was observed in abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distension using the Visual Analogue Scale. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may be effective in the treatment of chronic gastritis.
