  • Bioassay-directed fractionation of the dired roots of Sophorae Radix led to the isolation of Sophoraflavanone G. Their structures were elucidated using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, UV, IR and mass spectral ananlyses. These compounds exhibited a moderate antimicrobial activities against Streptococcus gordonii, Actinobacillus actinomycetemoomitans and Porphylomonas gingivalis.

The second is to comparatively evaluate safety of this cosmetics. Methods : We opened collecting of applicant that men and women(the 18~35-year-old) with acne on face. We selected subjects who came up to entire inclusion criteria and were not included in the exclusion criteria. We checked changes of Acne Global score, skin sebum, moisture, pores counts, Skindex-29 for 8 weeks. Results : 1. Comparison of changes in Global score, it declined in both experimental group and control group. But Experimental group showed a statistically significant decline than control group. 2. Comparison of changes in sebum and moisture, it declined in both experimental group and control group. But there was no statistically significant difference between those two groups. 3. Comparison of changes in erythema normal area, it declined in both experimental group and control group. But there was no statistically significant difference between those two groups. 4. Comparison of changes in pore counts, it increased statistically significantly in both experimental group and control group. 5. Comparison of changes in Skindex-29, it declined in both experimental group and control group. But there was no statistically significant difference between those two groups. Conclusion : Considering the above experiments, it is suggested that herbal cosmetics containing Cortex Betulae Platyphyllae extract complex have a positive effect on acne.

  • The aqueous Green tea comes to be used with the Oriental medicine plant, it has the numerous health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti- carcinogenic properties. Epidermal progenitor cells give rise to multiple skin lineages: hair follicle, sebaceous gland and the overlying interfollicular epidermis. Sebocytes are the cells of the sebaceous gland, which synthesize and accumulate lipid dropolets. In order to determine the effect of Green tea on lipid production, several experiments were performed in SZ95 cells (sebocytes). We found that Green tea increased lipid droplets compared with control in a dose-dependent manner. Human sebaceous glands produce sebum, a lipid mixture of squalene, wax esters, triglycerides, cholesterol esters, and free fatty acids that is secreted onto the skin. Therefore, to investigate the effects of Green tea on intracellular lipid levels, we treated SZ95 cells with Green tea, and then examined cholesterol and triglyceride levels. After treatment of the cells with Green tea, the cholesterol and triglyceride levels of SZ95 cells were increased significantly in a dose-dependent manner.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and recent trends of Korean herbal medicine cosmetics brand logos and to shed light on the identities of herbal medicine cosmetics in Korea. Ultimately this study aims to seek ways to develop strategic global brands distinguished from other brands, and providing the basic data for such development. In order to investigate the characteristics of brand logos, the researcher of this study chose 11 Korean Herbal Medicine Cosmetics Brands marketed today and collected information related to the brands from their websites. The visual characteristics of the logos currently used by Korean herbal medicine cosmetics can be summarized as follows. Most brand logos include marks consisting of Chinese letters written in calligraphy styles to represent the brand information of'Korean herbal medicine.' As for colors, most brands use mostly black and gold to present luxurious images, or convey strong impressions through stark contrast between black, red and white, hoping to distinguish themselves from other cosmetic products. An analysis of the linguistic characteristics of herbal medicine cosmetics in South Korea revealed that most brands use associative and freestanding brand names which suggest that the user's appearance will improve by using the products they represent. Using such names that convey oriental purity and mysterious meanings, trying to capture the deepest beauty with the best quality, the brands construct brand images that are luxurious and high-class. Most of the brands currently used by Korean herbal medicine cosmetics employ components that emphasize the functional aspect of Korean herbal medicine cosmetics. To secure the status of world-class brands, however, it is imperative to conduct research on brand logos capable of establishing identities distinguished from others.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to test patients with Atopic Dermatitis by external application with Gynostemma Pentaphyllum MAKINO in cosmetics. Methods : We gave scores to 59 patients who visited the Dept. of Oriental Medical Opthalmology & Otolaryngology & Dermatology of Daegu Hanny Oriental Medical Center from July 1st, 2005 to December 31th. We checked the clinic index score(extent. intensity : the degree of erythema, induration or papulation, puritus, excorination, lichenification, scaling or dryness, erosion or oozing or weeping. the degree of itching), Eosinophil count and IgE. Results : There are 46 patients we could check by clinic index score, and 44 patients by laboratory. 1. In the 46 cases clinic index score was significantly decreased between the before- and afterexternal application treatment periods(P<0.01). 2. The 46 cases was devided into two types (moist heat type and blood dryness type) by intensity. External application of Gynostemma Pentaphyllum MAKINO in cosmetics did not significant change by two types. 3. In the 44 laboratory cases, the number of eosinophil counts was decreased but the number of IgE was significantly increased. Conclusions : Considering the above results, we have concluded that cosmetics with Gynostemma Pentaphyllum MAKINO have the remedical effect for Atopic Dermatitis.

The cause of allergy are tick, house dust, egg, milk, bean, cosmetics, virus, bacteria, flesh and meat in Western medicine. While, Oriental medicine did not have an application on the allergy, but recognized that allergy is connected with fetal toxicosis, heat-syndrome in new born, syndrome characterized by dyspnea, sneezing, stuffy nose, nasal discharge and phlegm. Therefor, We knowed method of medical treatment following cause of disease and pathogenesis against allergy. Allergic disease(atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma, rhinitis) were related with lung, spleen, kidney. To prevent allergic disease in born, Oriental medicine taked a serious view of fetal education. In Western medicine, The cause of allergy applied to exopathogen of Oriental medicine. In Oriental medicine, Treatment of allergy used generally strengthening the body resistance to eliminate pathogenic factors.

  • This study was to explore the lipogenic effect by ethanol extract of ponciri fructus (EPF) and possible molecular mechanisms in sebocyte. When SZ95 sebocyte cell line were treated with the EPF, lipid droplets were accumulated in the majority of cells. EPF increased expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in the SZ95 cells. EPF augmented expression of PPAR-${\beta}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$ but not that of PPAR-${\alpha}$. These results suggest that EPF induces lipogenesis in SZ95 cells through SREBP-1, PPAR-${\beta}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$ activations.

  • Objectives: We investigated the physical effects of the cosmetics containing Ginkgo biloba. with meridian massage on human skin by using non-invasive instruments. Methods: We made cosmetics containing the extract of Ginkgo biloba. and measured physiological effects such as skin moisturization, blood flow, skin color, sebum secretion, skin evenness of volunteers applied the cosmetic products with meridian massage for 2 weeks. Results: Topical applications of w/o cream that 1 % Ginkgo biloba. was emulsified, showed significant improvement of blood flow, water contents and $L{\ast}$ value of the face skin. And the skin evenness, sebum contents and skin surface smoothness were improved after 2 weeks. Conclusions: The combination of cosmetics containing the extract of Ginkgo biloba. with meridian massage improved the physical properties of human skin during a treatment. Especially the meridian massage played a role of enhancing the effect of the cosmetics containing Ginkgo biloba.
