  • morphologically different Larix Kaemferi Carr sawdust. The pellet characteristics included moisture contents satisfied the first grade (less than 10%) of quality standard of wood pellets announced by Korea Forest Research Institute. Densities were also adequate for the first grade (640kg/$m^3$) on the quality standard and there was no large difference in other characteristics of pellets, however, pellets manufactured with planer shavings had the highest density. Ash contents also passed the first grade (less than 0.7) of quality standard. But bark pellet exceeded the second grade (1.5%) in ash content. Lower absorption ratio of bark pellet showed the effect on hygroscpicity. The heating value of the manufactured wood pellets in this study exceeded the first grade of quality standard(more than 4,300 kcal/kg).

  • A new wood-degrading fungus Trichophyton rubrum LKY-7 secretes a high level of laccase in a glucose-peptone liquid medium. The production of laccase by the fungus was barely induced by 2,5-xylidine. The laccase has been purified to homogeneity through three chromatography steps in an overall yield of 40%. The molecular mass of the purified laccase was about 65 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The purified laccase had the distinct blue color and had basic spectroscopic features of a typical blue laccase: two absorption maxima at 278 and 610 nm and a shoulder at 338 nm. The N-terminus of the laccase has been sequenced, revealing high homology to laccases from wood-degrading white-rot fungi such as Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. The enzyme had a "low" redox potential (0.5 V vs normal hydrogen electrode), yet it was one of the most active laccases in oxidizing a series of representative substrates/mediators. Compared with other fungal laccases, the laccase has a very low Km value with ABTS [2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] as a substrate and a very high Km value with violuric acid as a substrate. The laccase has the isoelectric point of 4.0. The laccase had very acidic optimal pH values (pH 3-4) while it was more stable at neutral pH than at acidic pH. The laccase oxidized hydroquinone faster than catechol and pyrogallol. The oxidation of tyrosine by the laccase was not detectable under the reaction conditions. The laccase was strongly inhibited by sodium azide and sodium fluoride. fluoride.

  • Ginsenosides of roots in Panax ginseng were analyzed by metabolic-targeting HPLC using the partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and compared depending on sowing methods between direct seeding and transplanting method. Score plots derived from PLS-DA could identify the sowing method between the direct seeding and transplanting method in P. ginseng roots. The ginsenoside compounds were assigned as Rg1, Re, Rf, Rg2, Rb1, Rc, Rb2, Rb3, and Rd. Contents of Re, Rf, Rg2, Rb1, Rc, Rb3, and Rd of main roots produced from the transplanting method were relatively higher than those of samples produced from direct seeding method. Also, contents of Rg1, Re, Rf, Rg2, Rb1, Rc, Rb2, Rb3, and Rd of lateral roots from the transplanted samples were relatively higher than those of samples produced from direct seeding method. Therefore, HPLC with PLS-DA analysis can be a straightforward tool for identification of ginsenosides in main or lateral roots of P. ginseng obtained from two different seeding methods between direct and transplanting methods.

  • The nonlinear hydrodynamic pressure force and moment on hinged wavemakers of variable-draft are presented. A closed-form solution (correct to second-order) for the nonlinear wavemaker boundary value problem has been obtained by employing the Stokes perturbation expansion scheme. The physical significance of the second-order contributions to the hydrodynamic pressure moment are examined in detail. Design curves are presented which demonstrate both the magnitude of the second-order nonlinearities and the effects of the variable-draft hinge height. The second-order contributions to the total hydrodynamic force and moment consist of a time-dependent and a steady part. The sum of the first and second-order pressure force and moment show a significant increase over those predicted by linear wavemaker theory. The second-order effects are shown to vary with both relative water depth and wave amplitude. The second-order dynamic effects are relatively more important for hinged wavemakers with shallower drafts.

  • From February through March 2002, sixteen rockfishes representing three species were collected from Oregon Coast Aquarium and Newport fish market and examined far nematodes. During this study, a total of 157 Anisakis type larvae were recovered from Sebastes spp. and parasitized for an average infection prevalence of 50.0%. The yellowtail rockfish, S. flavidus, darkblotched rockfish, S. crameri, and canary rockfish, S. pinniger examined were infected with 110 Anisakis simplex larva, 30 Contracaecum spp. larva and 17 Pseudoterranova decipiens larva. Of the rockfishes examined, 75.0% carried Sebastes crameri, and 12.5% S. flavidus and S. crameri, respectively. The sites of infection far Anisakis type larvae were the intestine, omentum, and stomach walls. A. simplex larvae infected 60.0% on S. crameri and 33.3% on S.flavidus and S. pinniger respectively. The prevalence of Contracaecum sp. larvae and Pseudoterranova decipiens larvae on S. pinniger was 33.3%. The intensities of A. simplex larvae ranged from 1 to 87 in S. flavidus, S. crameri, and S. pinniger. The intensity of Contracaecum spp. larvae and P. decipiens larvae ranged from 0 to 30 in S. pinniger.

  • Retaining wall with relieving platform has advantages in terms of stability and costs because it decreases the earth pressure by installing the relieving platform. However, there have not been previous studies of the optimal design for the retaining wall with reliving platform in practice. In this study, the optimal design conditions of the retaining wall with relieving platform are proposed by evaluating the reduction effect of lateral earth pressure based on the numerical analysis of 40 cross sections by changing wall types, wall heights, shelf locations and lengths. As a result, the optimal location of a shelf is the central part of a retaining wall (h/H=0.50) and the optimal length is recommended to be designed to satisfy b/L=0.45, at least.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the toilet training status (TTS) of Korean toddlers and their mothers' level of knowledge of toilet training (TT) and to identify the relationship between toddlers' TTS and mothers' level of knowledge of TT. Method: The participants in this study were 315 12-29 month old infants and their mothers recruited from outpatient clinics of hospitals and day care centers. T-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results: TTS of Korean toddlers showed was more advanced compared with previous research samples except for independent hand washing after toileting and this improved with age. The mothers showed higher understanding of the importance of a positive experience and a different pace for each child in the appropriate period for toilet training but less appreciation of the readiness of child to initiate TT. There was a significant correlation between TTS and mothers' level of knowledge of TT. Conclusion: Using the above findings, health professionals who work with children and their families need to develop parent education programs on TT that will promote toddlers' physical and socio-emotional development.

  • This paper examined the effects of users' expectations, norms and recreation motives on perceived conflict in a recreation setting. The study used data collected at Second Campground in Chirisan National Park, Korea, during the summer of 1994. Of the total 280 questionnaires distributed, 253 questionnaires(90.4%) were usable. About 82% of the respondents perceived conflict by others' late-night-singing. This study supported the notion that perceived conflict occurs when norms, expectations, and recreation motives are interfered with by others' incompatible behaviors. Solitude/nature motive factor was a better predictor of perceived conflict than norm-interference or expectation-interference. However, the relative predictability of each variable on perceived conflict could be various depending on different kinds of recreation motives, specific ways of measuring norms, expectations and conflict. Management implications were discussed.

  • This study was conducted to find out whether information based on norm activation theory affects personal norm and rule-violating behavior in a recreation setting, using the data collected from the Second Campground in Chiri-Mountain National Park in 1994. Of the total 280 questionnaires distributed, 253(90.4%) were usable for data analysis. Results showed that information did not increase awareness of consequences(AC) of their actions or ascription of responsibility(AR) for acts and consequences to themselves, and did not directly decrease the quiet time rule-violating behavior. However, it was found that respondents with high ACR(combination of AC and AR) or personal norms less violated the rule. Management implications of these findings were discussed.

  • With industrial restructuring and growing competition among places throughout the world, many countries including Korea are getting highly dependent on place marketing as their development strategy. Previous discussions on place marketing strategy maintain that the strategy should be performed on the basis of the unique placeness of each place. Not all places, however, have placeness that can be used for the place marketing strategy. Also, there are some cases of success in place marketing by introducing elements irrelevant to the places. In this context, this study aims to analyze previous debates on place and place marketing, and to investigate the possibility of creating placeness. In addition, it selected as case places the city of Ashland and the city of Jacksonville in the state of Oregon, USA and Tongyeong-si in Korea and examined how the art festivals, one of major means of place marketing, can be used in creating placeness.
