A Comparative Study on Quantity of Phoria between New Phoria Measurement with 3D Display and Existing Methods (개발된 3D Display 장치를 이용한 사위검사법과 기존 사위검사법으로 측정한 사위량 비교에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study compared the quantity of phoria for distance by new method with that by existing methods. Methods: For this study, it was selected to two existing phoria measurements, von Graefe and Maddox rod. And new method named "3D polarizing phoria measurement" was designed to measure the quantity of phoria using polarizing glasses and 3D display. Unlike existing measurement using polarized lens, newly considered method measured the quantity of phoria in condition removed perfect binocular fusion using field stop on apparatus and polarized lens. For using new method for distance, it was developed a phoria test chart. It supports three kinds of phoria measurements. Subjects were 12 (male 6, female 6). They had three phoria tests (1 sets) including new method. It was considered the effect of experimental order, so we tested all cases about experimental order. The number of cases was 6 sets, and the sample size in this experiment was 72 sets. For removing binocular fusion, lighting of the laboratory that was below 10 lx and the background color of phoria test chart was dark, RGB=(20, 20, 20). Results: Subjects were sorted into three groups. Samples with exophoria and orthophoria were 30 sets each, and those with esophoria were 12 sets. The quantity of phoria measured three tests differ from each other like "newmethod < von Graefe < Maddox rod", and there were statistically significant difference each other. Conclusions: This study has great significance in the sense that new method was the measurement with naturally removing binocular fusion without dizziness during the tests.

Changes in Objective and Subjective Responses in Soft Contact Lens Wearers Refitted to Daily-Wear Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses (매일착용 실리콘 하이드로겔렌즈로 바꿔 착용한 소프트 콘택트렌즈 착용자에서 나타난 증상 변화)

  • Silicone hydrogel contact lenses developed as a continuous-wear modality are now used as a daily-wear contact lenses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical performance in a group of successful long-term wearers of conventional hydrogel contact lenses when refitted with daily wear $O_2OPTIX$ silicone hydrogel lenses. Sixty-two wearers ($30.7{\pm}19.9$ months of prior lens wear) among sixty-five soft lens wearers refitted with $O_2OPTIX$ silicone hydrogel lenses were participated in this study finally. Subjective symptoms were scored and objective signs were graded using CCLRU scales during the study period. 98% of subjects were successfully refitted with the one base curve of $O_2OPTIX$, and 33.9% of subjects were needed more or less lens powers compared with their habitual lenses. Subjects reported a concurrent reduction in dryness, redness and tiredness compared with their habitual lenses and both subjective and objective evaluations showed that dryness, tiredness, itchiness, bulbar and limbal hyperemia were decreased and significantly decreased particularly for those subjects with greater baseline symptoms (p<0.0001). But corneal staining was increased and was seen in many subjects during the study (p<0.0001). Refitting existing soft contact lens wearers with silicone hydrogel contact lens could result in a decreased in dryness, redness and tiredness, particularly more effective for those subjects with greater baseline of those symptoms. When patients using conventional hydrogel materials switch to a silicone hydrogel material, the potential for increased corneal staining should be considered and over-refraction should be needed to give a best vision.

The Changes of VEP Values According to the Luminance Conditions and Refractive Errors in Normal Persons (정상인에서 조도와 굴절이상도에 따른 시유발전위 검사 값의 변화)

  • The visual evoke potential(VEP) is the effective method to diagnose and treat the amblyopia or to check the infants visual ability. In order to evaluate the changes of P100 latencies and amplitudes of VEP by intensity of illumination and refractive errors, we measured latencies and amplitudes of 41 normal adults (20/20 VA) who have no ocular diseases and neurologic diseases. The results were as follows: In the scotopic condition, the latencies were N75$75.83{\pm}3.69$ msec, P100$103.48{\pm}5.34$ msec, the P100 amplitude was $14.86{\pm}2.43$ msec, and in the photopic condition, the latencies were N75$76.71{\pm}3.11$ msec, P100$107.26{\pm}5.54$ msec and the P100 amplitude was $10.35{\pm}1.75$ msec. The latencies and amplitudes of P100 in the photopic condition had higher values than those in the scotopic condition and the measures were significantly different between the scotopic and photopic condition (p<0.01). The P100 latencies were delayed both in the scotopic and photopic condition with the refractive errors and those measures were delayed more than in the photopic condition. The P100 amplitudes in the induced myopic and hyperopic conditionsreduced than in the emmetopes in both illumination conditions. The P100 latencies and amplitudes in emmetropes showed a correlation with the induced myopic conditions in the scotopic condition. Those results showed that P100 latencies and amplitudes are dependent on the illumination conditions and refractive errors. And we suggest that those results would be useful to determine and evaluate the normal range for the person considering patients' refractive errors and illumination of the test room.

Thermographic Assessment in Dry Eye Syndrome, Compared with Normal Eyes by Using Thermography (열화상카메라를 이용한 정상안과 건성안의 서모그래피 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the ocular surface and the palpebral conjunctiva of categorized subjects, which were divided into normal eye group and dry eye group, by using a thermal camera. Methods: Subjects were 144 eyes of 72 normal university students, who didn't have any corneal disease, abnormal lacrimal ducts, medical records regarding ocular surgeries, or experience of using contact lens. Subjects were divided into two groups, which were normal eye group and dry eye group, based on the results of TBUT, Schirmer I test, and McMonnies test. After categorizing the subjects, the temperature of the subjects' ocular surface and the palpebral conjunctiva were measured and analyzed by using a thermal camera (Cox CX series, Answer co., Korea). Results: In the normal eye group's Central Ar.1, Nasal Ar.2, Temporal Ar.3, Superior Ar.4, Inferior Ar.5, the measured amount of temperature change on each area was $-0.13{\pm}0.08$, $-0.14{\pm}0.08$, $-0.12{\pm}0.08$, $-0.14{\pm}0.08$, $-0.10{\pm}0.09(^{\circ}C/sec)$. The dry eye group's results were $-0.17{\pm}0.08$, $-0.16{\pm}0.07$, $-0.16{\pm}0.08$, $-0.17{\pm}0.09$, $-0.15{\pm}0.08(^{\circ}C/sec)$. When compared with the normal eye group, the values of Ar.1, Ar.3, Ar.5 were significantly different in the dry eye group(p<0.05). The amount of temperature change, which was observed on the palpebral conjunctiva(Ar.1:central, Ar.2: nasal, Ar.3: temporal) of the normal eyes, measured by thermography, was $34.36{\pm}1.12$, $34.17{\pm}1.10$, $34.07{\pm}1.12^{\circ}C$ on each area. Same values taken from the dry eye group was $33.55{\pm}0.94$, $33.43{\pm}0.97$, $33.51{\pm}1.06^{\circ}C$ on each area. The values of Ar.1, taken from the dry eye group, had a significant difference, compared to the values of the normal eye group(p=0.05). Conclusion: The temperature of the ocular surface decreased faster on the dry eyes, compared to the normal eyes. The temperature measured on the palpebral conjunctiva of the dry eyes were also lower than the normal eyes. The temperature changes on the ocular surface, observed with a thermal camera, were objective values to assess the stability of tear films, and might provide useful data for studies related to dry eye syndrome.

Comparison of Central and Peripheral Refraction in Myopic Eyes after Corneal Refractive Surgery and Emmetropes (굴절교정수술을 받은 근시안과 정시안에서 중심부 및 주변부의 굴절력 비교)

  • Purpose: To evaluate changes in central and peripheral refraction along the horizontal visual fields in myopic corneal refractive surgery group compared with emmetropes. Methods: One hundred twenty eyes of 60 subjects ($23.56{\pm}2.54$ years, range: 20 to 29) who underwent myopic refractive surgery and 40 eyes of 20 emmetropes ($22.50{\pm}1.74$ years, range: 20 to 25) were enrolled. The central and peripheral refractions were measured along the horizontal meridianat $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$ in the nasal and temporal areas using an open-field autorefractor. For analysis of post-op group, the group was classified by pre-op spherical equivalents of < -6.00 D and ${\geq}-6.00D$ as two post-op groups. Results: Pre-op spherical equivalent was $-4.56{\pm}0.92D$ (rang: -2.50 to -5.58 D) in post-op group 1, and $-7.09{\pm}0.96D$ (rang: -6.00 to -9.00 D) in post-op group 2. Spherical equivalent (M) in the emmetropes ranged from $-0.20{\pm}0.22D$ at center to $-0.64{\pm}0.83D$ at $25^{\circ}$ in the temporal visual field and to $-0.20{\pm}0.67D$ at $25^{\circ}$ in the nasal visual field; M in post-op group 1 ranged from $-0.16{\pm}0.29D$ at center to $-5.29{\pm}1.82D$ at $25^{\circ}$ in the temporal visual field and to $-4.48{\pm}1.88D$ at $25^{\circ}$ in the nasal visual field; M in post-op group 2 ranged from $-0.20{\pm}0.32D$ at center to $-7.98{\pm}2.08D$ at $25^{\circ}$ in the temporal visual field and to $-7.90{\pm}2.26D$ at $25^{\circ}$ in the nasal visual field. Among the three groups, there was no significant difference in M at central visual field (p=0.600) and at $5^{\circ}$ in the temporal visual field (p=0.647), whereas, there was significant difference in M at paracentral and peripheral visual field (p=0.000). Conclusions: Emmetropes had relatively constant refractive errors throughout the central and peripheral visual field and showed myopic peripheral defocus along the horizontal visual field. On the other hand, in myopic corneal refractive surgery group, there were significant differences in refractive errors between the central and peripheral visual field compared with differences in the central and peripheral refraction patterns of emmetropes.

The Study of Visual Fatigue by Monitor Letter Contrast with an Eye Tracker (아이트래커를 이용한 모니터 글자 대비도에 따른 눈의 피로도 연구)

  • Purpose: This study is to investigate correlation between eye fatigue and letter contrast according to letter contrast changes on monitor display. Methods: Reading speed test were carried out for 53 subjects (mean age: $22.68{\pm}1.85$ years) who have over Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) 1.0, and 45 subjects, who could read over 123 out of 163 letters among 53 subjects were selected. They were asked to read the letters which were composed of Black (contrast 100%), Dark gray (contrast 80%), Gray (contrast 80%), Light gray (contrast 30%) randomly. The change of their eye fatigue by letter contrast on monitor display was measured by monitoring their eyes with an eye-tracker while they were reading letters. Results: Event Duration (sec) was 33.635 for Black, 32.266 Dark gray, 33.936 for Gray, and 34.848 for Light gray. Average of Fixation Duration (sec) was 0.224 for Black, 0.218 for Dark gray, 0.239 for Gray and 0.243 for Light gray. Average of Pupil diameter (mm) was 41.133 mm for Black, 41.160 mm for Dark gray, 40.880 mm for Gray and 40.459 mm for Light gray. Frequency (blinks/sec) was 0.211 for Black, 0.206 for Dark gray, 0.221 for Gray, and 0.238 for Light gray. Conclusions: Event Duration and average of Fixation Duration were the shortest for Dark gray and the longest for Light gray. In average Pupil diameter was the biggest Dark gray and the smallest for Light gray. Blink Frequency (blinks/sec) was the lowest for Dark gray and the highest for Light gray. Visual fatigue by brightness of letters on monitor display was the least for Dark gray followed by Black, Gray and Light gray.

A Study on the Students' Characteristics of Ophthalmic Optics under Bachelor's Degree Course in Academic Credit Bank System - Focus on the Educational Institutions in Gyeonggi Region - (학점은행제 학사학위과정 안경광학전공 학습자의 특성에 관한 연구 - 경기지역 교육기관을 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: By investigating the characteristics of the students ophthalmic optics under bachelor's degree course in academic credit bank system, this study aimed to utilize this survey as a basic material for the operation and the improvement of academic credit bank system as the continued education for opticians. Methods: A questionnaire survey for the characteristics of the students was conducted on 98 bachelors who registered in the academic credit bank system and an analysis was made out of the result. Results: As the purpose of selecting the academic credit bank system, acquisition of bachelor's degree took the major portion (51.0%); for information route, school or superior at work took the major portion (33.7%); and for educational institution, alma mater took the major portion (31.6%). Family cooperation (72.4%) to the students in the academic credit bank system was higher than workplace cooperation (46.9%) or social cooperation (39.8%). For the time required for the bachelor's degree course in the academic credit bank system, 2 semesters (55.6%) took the major portion, and 38.9% for entering graduate school and 5.6% for university transfer. The result showed a significant difference in the information route for the academic credit bank system (p<.05), selection criteria for educational institution (p<.05) and workplace cooperation (p<.01) depending on the age. It showed a significant difference in the selection purpose for the academic credit bank system (p<.01), average attendance day (p<.05), workplace cooperation (p<.01) and difficulties (p<.01) depending on working place. It showed a significant difference in the selection criteria for educational institution (p<.01) and family cooperation (p<.05) depending on the academic system of their alma mater. It showed a significant difference in the information route (p<.05), the selection criteria for educational institution (p<.01) and workplace cooperation (p<.05). Conclusions: It is necessary for optometrists to study and pay more attention to continuing education, and the operation and support for the academic credit bank system should be made in consideration of the characteristics of students.

Induced Prisms of Wearing Glasses Measured by Photographing (사진촬영으로 측정한 착용안경의 유발프리즘)

  • Purpose: The matching of the optical center and the pupil center was measured by photographs in wearing glasses. In this study, the influences of the induced prism by the mismatching are studied. Methods: 74 subjects (148 eyes) who were spectacles wearer were participated in this study. The mean age was $29.19{\pm}12.22$ years (range 19-55 years). The facial photographs of subjects were taken while wearing spectacles. The matching of the corneal reflected image and optical center of the spectacle lens in the horizontal deviations, and the vertical deviations were measured by the observation of the photo image. The prisms induced in accordance with various frame type were calculated from the mismatching deviations. Results: The binocular horizontal deviations were $1.55{\pm}1.70mm$ for the metal frame, $1.71{\pm}2.21mm$ for the clings type plastic frame, and $1.15{\pm}1.38mm$ for the plastic frame. In the horizontal direction induced prism, the ratio over the tolerance was 23%. The ratio were the 17.6% at the BI prism, and 5.4% at the BO prism. The binocular vertical deviation comparisons were $3.93{\pm}1.91mm$ for the metal frame, $5.79{\pm}1.93mm$ for the clings type plastic frame, and 1$6.01{\pm}2.94mm$ for the plastic frame. In the vertical direction induced prism, the ratio over the tolerance was 44.6%. Based on the refraction power, the ratio were 12.2% at -0.25${\leq}-3.00$, and 32.4% at -3.00${\leq}-12.00D$. Conclusions: The induced prisms in the horizontal direction were much in the BI prism. The binocular vertical deviations of the glasses.

Relationship of Fixation Disparity and Heterophoria According to Fixation Distance (원, 근거리에서 주시시차와 사위와의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study measured Y-intercept that means a fixation disparity, X-intercept that means a associated phoria and slope of a fixation disparity curve (FDC), which are variables of dissociated phoria and the FDC. We searched for the result value and examined the direction, distribution pattern and a variable that give an most affect on dissociated phoria and the FDC at distance and near. Also this study examined that there were statistically significant differences between distance and near, comparing the result value. Methods: We measured the dissociated phoria and the fixation disparity for 51 subjects at distance and near in June, 2007. All subjects ranged from 20 to 25 years of age (average 21.72${\pm}$1.88 years old) and had no eye disease. At distance the dissociated phoria measured with the distance MIM card (muscle imbalance measure card, Bernell co., USA), and the fixation disparity measured with the modified Mallett Far Unit (Bernell co., USA). At near the dissociated phoria measured with the near MIM card (muscle imbalance measure card, Bernell co., USA), and the fixation disparity measured with the Wesson fixation disparity card (American Optical co., USA). Results: The percentage distribution of types of fixation disparity curves was that at distance prevalence of Type I (74.6%) was the highest, followed by Type IV (17.6%) and Type II (3.9%), Type III (3.9%) and that at near prevalence of Type I (53.0%) was the highest, followed by Type III (29.4%), Type IV (13.7%) and Type II (3.9%). 2. There were significantly correlation in dissociated phoria, fixation disparity (Y-intercept) and associated phoria (X-intercept). 3. The fixation disparity at distance was most affected by associated phoria (X-intercept) (p=0.000). The distance dissociated phoria was most affected by fixation disparity (Y-intercept) (p=0.342), but the influence was weak. 4. The fixation disparity at near was most affected by associated phoria (X-intercept) (p=0.000). The near also dissociated phoria was most affected by associated phoria (X-intercept) (p=0.009). The result that compared the each variables with the same variables at distance and near had statistically significant on paired t-test for among dissociated phoria (t=7.529, p=0.000), X-intercept (t=5.860, p=0.000), the Y-intercept (t=4.640, p=0.000) but slope of the FDC did not differ significant (t=1.336 p=0.188). Conclusions: Relationship of fixation disparity and Heterophoria had close correlation at distance and near.

Effects of Myopia Alleviation Lenses in accordance with Parents' Refractive Errors (부모의 굴절이상에 따른 근시완화렌즈 효과)

  • Purpose : The study looked at how effective each group wearing MyoVison lens, MC lens, and Single Vision lensdepending on their parents' myopia condition. Methods : The study observed the changeof spherical equivalent among customers, who visited between January 2010 and December 2016,of an optical shop in Incheon Metropolitan City. And we observed MyoVision 152 eyes, MC Lens 86 eyes and Single Vision lens 270 eyes. This study was conducted using SPSS ver18, which analyzes the changes in average values of MyoVision, MC Lens, and Single Vision for a year.In each group, the differences in the group were compared using the Paired T-test and then one-way ANOVA (post-hoc; Bonferroni) Results : Group-to-group comparisons showed that MyoVision and MC Lens have a shorterinhibition than Single Vision. In particular, MyoVisionand MC Lens showed different relief effects depending on the degree of refraction of parents.When both parents had normal refractive, the change between MyoVision and Single Vision lens was $-0.35{\pm}0.05D$. When the father had a refraction MC lens were $-0.36{\pm}0.14D$ more effective than Single Vision. When only the mother had refraction, the mean value between MyoVision and Single Vision lens was $-0.37{\pm}0.06D$, and the mean between MC lens and Single Vision lens was $-0.38{\pm}0.08D$. And when both parents had refraction problems, the mean value change between MyoVision and Single Vision lens was $-0.28{\pm}0.07D$, and $-0.31{\pm}0.07D$, respectively. Conclusion : MyoVision and MC Lens appeared to have no effect on the functions of mitigating myopia in within group comparisons, but MyoVision and MC Lens showed reducing myopia than Single Vision in between group.
