  • Laboratory experiment was performed to evaluate the influence of mixing conditions to the strength of solidified sandy soils with cement. The major physical factors considered in this experiment were the fine particles content(<$\sharp200%$), cement content(%) and water-cement ratio, and unconfined compressive strength test was performed on the samples at 7 and 28 cured day. The results of tests shows that when the cement content is relatively low (7~10 percents) the fine content in the sandy soils is very important, but when cement content is high the water-cement ratio became more important. It was appeared that in the range of the cement content of 7~10 percents, about 20~30 percents of fine content to the total sample weight is the optimum condition to get the maximum strength. In the case of the cement content of 13 percents, the strength of sample was considerably affected by the water-cement ratio rather than the fine content. In this paper, empirical equations were also developed and evaluated to verify the relationship among three factors by the multi-regression analysis.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the influence of the various soil water regimes on photosynthesis and growth and development of ginseng plant (3 years). The results were as follows: optimum soil water content for root dry weight and diameter appeared to be 62% of field capacity (13.9% fresh weight basis). The 62% field capacity showed superiority in leaf area, leaf dry weight and also in number of flower, fruit, seed per plant. Net photosynthesis rates per unit area increased with increasing soil water content but net photosynthesis rates per plant were superior in 62% field capacity. Rates of transpiration increased linearly with increasing soil water content but density of stomata decreased with increasing soil water content.

  • Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a zero slump concrete consisting of a mixture of cementitious materials, sand, dense graded aggregates and water. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of aggregate type on strength and abrasion resistance of RCC made by using granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as partial replacement of cement. Mix proportions of RCC were finalized based upon the optimum water content achieved in compaction test. Two different series of RCC mixes were prepared with two different aggregates: crushed gravel and limestone aggregates. In both series, cement was partially replaced with GGBS at a replacement level of 20%, 40% and 60%. Strength Properties and abrasion resistance of the resultant mixes was investigated. Abrasion resistance becomes an essential parameter for understanding the acceptability of RCC for rigid pavements. Experimental results show that limestone aggregates, with optimum percentage of GGBS, perform better in compressive strength and abrasion resistance as compared to the use of crushed gravel aggregates. Observed results are further supported by stoichiometric analysis of the mixes by using basic stoichiometric equations for hydration of major cement compounds.

  • The purpose of this study was performed to investigate the optimum conditions of pH, concrete sludge, seed dosage, mixing intensity, operation time in treating fluoride-containing wastewater as $CaF_2$ using the ready-mixed concrete sludge. Considering fluoride removal, water content, that pH 6, concrete sludge dosage of 10 g/L, Seed dosage ($CaF_2$) of 2 g/L, mixing intensity of 100 rpm and operation time of 60 min were found to be optimum. Correspondingly, removal of fluoride and water content was about 85% and 64%, respectively. Increase in amount of seed dosage did not affect fluoride removal efficiency. but the result that the water content is decreased was shown up in occuring the solid-liquid separation well.

  • In this study, the effect of water content condition was investigated on the Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters which are commonly used as the input data in the soil slope analysis. For the purpose, a series of direct shear test was conducted in different water content conditions on the two types of weathered soils and a dam core material, obtained from the domestic slope construction sites and the dam construction site, respectively. The comparisons between the values of the Mohr-Coulomb ${\phi}_{peak}$ and $c_{peak}$, estimated from the relationships between the normal stress and the peak shear stress for the samples in the four different water content conditions (i.e., dry side, optimum, wet side, and saturated), showed that overall, the values of $c_{peak}$ decreased gradually while those of ${\phi}_{peak}$ did not vary much with increasing the water content. A rough estimate for the varying ratio of the values of ${\phi}_{peak}$ and $c_{peak}$ indicated that the values of $c_{peak}$ decreased by every 25% of the $c_{peak}$ values in dry side, while those of ${\phi}_{peak}$ were constant, as the water content condition changed from dry, optimum, and wet to saturated, respectively.

  • In this study, to determine the optimum fermentation process for the feed production of food wastes and estimate the practical value of fermented feed using kudzu creeper and sawdust as bulking agent. This study considered initial C/N ratio control as the fermentation process variables. The result are summarized as follows. Minimum water contents of byproducts in the fermentation feed production showed 39%(kudzu), 37%(sawdust) at the C/N ratio 25 and 45%(kudzu, sawdust) at the C/N ratio 35. Temperature variations in the fermentation feed production at the C/N ratio 25 indicated $68^{\circ}C$(kudzu), $70^{\circ}C$(sawdust). Optimum condition of fermentation process of water content, C/N ratio and permeability (porous structure of the mixture). For optimum fermentation gravitationally dewatered garbage, the proper mixing ratios of kudzu(moisture contents : 17.3%) and sawdust(moisture contents : 13.2%) were 41% and 39%, respectively. Major biological reaction in the aerobic fermentation feed production occurred during 12~24hrs.

  • The various promotion countermeasures such as solidification, carbonization, and the creation of cement materials have been considered to existing treatment methods such as incineration and the creation of composts, since direct landfill was prohibited for encouraging the recycling based on the sludge treatment on land. The Main objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of co-incineration for MSW (municipal solid waste) and SS (sewage sludge) through the quantitative supply of sewage sludge. In this study, optimum water content to operate normally incinerator is 85%. In order to increase the workability of sewage sludge, it is necessary to supply properly water. In the case study of sites, optimum water content is 87% due to the water evaporation. Therefore, it was found that the water content up to 87% would be reached the stable operation of co-incinerator on the mixture of municipal waste solid and sewage sludge.

  • This study was aimed to both enhance the fluoride removal and to reduce the phosphorus removal in treating semiconductor wastewater using $Ca(OH)_2$ at low pH so as to facilitate struvite crystallization reaction. The struvite crystallization could be introduced after fluoride removal by retaining the phosphorus source. As the results, the method applied in this study achieved high fluoride removal efficiency (about 91%) with retardation of phosphorus removal at pH 4, compared to conventional methods where the removal of fluoride and phosphorus were done at pH 11. Therefore, the fluoride removal at low pH would contribute to the enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removals in a consecutive struvite crystallization reactor. Treatment of semiconductor wastewater at low pH using $Ca(OH)_2$ also had lower (about 20%) water content of precipitated sludge compared to conventional method. As the molar ratio of Ca to F increased the removal efficiencies of fluoride and phosphorus increased. Although the amount of seed dosage didn't affect the removal of fluoride and phosphorus, its increase reduced the water content of precipitated matter. Finally, considering consecutive struvite reaction, the optimum condition for the removal of fluoride and phosphorus was as follow: pH: 4, the molar ratio of Ca:F: 1:1.

  • In this study, we investigated for synthetic hydrotalcite in chloroprene rubber foam. Experiments were carried out to find the optimum content ratio by controlling the contents of MgO and Hydrotalcite. Swelling test in toluene immersion was made to measure the crosslinking density of CR foams, and the cure properties were investigated with flat die rheometer and Mooney viscosity. The difference of hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break were observed after immersing in 7% NaCl or 21% NaCl solutions for a day and four days. In addition, the volume change and water content remaining in CR foam were measured after immersing NaCl solution. As content of MgO increased, the value of the cure torque tended to increase, but it was almost constant above 2phr of MgO. However, the Mooney viscosity decreased with increasing MgO content. The crosslinking density, determined by the swelling ratio, showed that the CR compound without MgO showed a higher degree of swelling. When the content of hydrotalcite/MgO was 3:2, it was the lowest volume change of CR form. Also, As the content of hydrotalcite decreased, the difference of mechanical properties before and after immersion NaCl solution increased.
