  • This paper presents a chromatic dispersion monitoring technique using a clock-frequency component for carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) signal. The clock-frequency component is extracted by a clock-extraction (CE) process. To discover which CE methods are most efficient for dispersion monitoring, we evaluate the monitoring performance of each extracted clock signal. We also evaluate the monitoring ability to detect the optimum amount of dispersion compensation when optical nonlinearity exists, since it is more important in nonlinear transmission systems. We demonstrate efficient CE methods of CSRZ signal to monitor chromatic dispersion for optimum compensation in high-speed optical communication systems.

  • Because Seaming process of MPJ (Mechanical Press Joining) has various design factors such as thickness, bending radius, seaming width, caulking press width and the dynamic factor such as multistage plastic working, elastic recovery, residual stress, the optimum conditions can't be easily determined. Using a design of experiment based on the FEM, which has several advantages such as less computing, high accuracy performance and usefulness, this study was performed investigating the interaction effect between the various design factor as well as the main effect of the each design factor during drum MPJ and proposed optimum condition using center composition method among response surface derived from regression equation of simulation-based DOE.

  • Purpose: This study set out to develop a machine for separating shatter-resistant sesame after threshing. Methods: Three grades of sieve and different blower speeds were tested for a separation system that had been designed specifically for shatter-resistant sesame. Performance tests were run to evaluate the sieve and blower systems in terms of the sesame separation and loss ratios. Results: Tests of the first separation stage using the sieve system revealed the optimum sieve perforation size to be 5 mm. Tests of the second separation stage using the blower system identified the optimum blower speed as being 220 rpm. The optimum separation and loss ratios, of 96.5% and 3.5%, respectively, were obtained at a blower speed of 220 rpm. Conclusions: These results will be useful for the design, construction, and operation of threshing harvesters. For shatter-resistant sesame, an optimum blower speed of 220 rpm was identified.

  • The nonlinear dependence aspect of various conical tool indentation parameters leading to an optimum tool semi angle value for easiest perforation is plotted and discussed explicitly in this work with the conclusion that tool angle has an optimum response towards most of the indentation parameters. Around this optimum angle, the aluminium sheets showed minimum fracture toughness as well as minimum work input to overcome the offered resistance. At the end, the mechanism leading to this phenomenon is presented with the conclusion that plastic flow dominates as the dimple semi cone angle reaches 35 and both pre and post plastic flow perforations lead the tool semi cone angle value towards this dimple cone semi angle of plastic flow initiation for its optimum performance. It is also concluded that specimen material failure is solely under tensile hoop stress and hence results into radial cracks initiation and propagation.

  • This study investigated the seismic performance of a hybrid damper composed of a steel slit plate and friction pads, and an optimum retrofit scheme was developed based on life cycle cost. A sample hybrid damper was tested under cyclic loading to confirm its validity as a damping device and to construct its nonlinear analysis model. The effectiveness of the optimum damper distribution schemes was investigated by comparing the seismic fragility and the life cycle costs of the model structure before and after the retrofit. The test results showed that the damper behaved stably throughout the loading history. Numerical analysis results showed that the slit-friction hybrid dampers optimally distributed based on life cycle cost proved to be effective in minimizing the failure probability and the repair cost after earthquakes.

  • In this paper, various results on Iocally optimum detection of signals are reviewed concisely, which are easlily apphcable to weak signal detection problems. In addition, locally optmum rank detection schemes for weak signals are reviewed, which are nonparametric counterparts of the locally optimum detecturs. Examples of practical applications, problems in implementation dnd performance characteristecs of the locally optimum detectors are also discussed, Finally, a fuzzy extension of the generalized Neyman Pearson lemma is briefly discussd.

  • In this paper, we discuss face verification using the optimum nonlinear composite filter. The optimum nonlinear composite filter is derived by minimizing the output energy due to the additive noise and the input scene. We construct the nonlinear composite filter with 3 training images. The performance is analyzed in terms of the detection probability and the false alarm probability showing the robustness to distortion and noise.

  • This paper introduces the approximation and a proposed method to deal the optimum location network selection problem such that the total cost is minimized. For the proposed method, we derived a feasible solution and the variance. To compare the performances of the approximation and the proposed method, computer simulation is also implemented. The result showed the solutions being optimum with 74% for the proposed method and 57% for the approximation. When the solutions is not optimum, maximum and average deviations are below 4% and 2% respectively. The results indicate a slightly better performance of the proposed method in a certain case.

  • Two experiments were conducted with one-day-old straight run Muscovy ducklings to determine their protein and energy requirements. In the 1st experiment, isoenergetic diets (2800 kcal ME/kg) with three dietary proteins, 18, 20 and 22% in the starter period (1-28 days) and 16, 18 and 20% in the grower and finisher period (29-84 days) were used to determine the optimum protein requirement. While, in the 2nd experiment, isonitrogenous diets (20%, C.P.) with three dietary energy, 2700, 2800 and 2900 kcal ME/kg in the starter period (1-28 days) and (18% C.P.) with 2800, 2900 and 3000 kcal ME/kg in the grower-finisher period (29-84 days) were used to determine the optimum energy requirement. It was observed that 20% C.P. in the starter period and 18% C.P. in the grower and finisher period was adequate for optimum performance, while, 2900 kal ME/kg was sufficient to meet the optimum energy requirement in both the starter, grower-finisher period as regards body weight, feed efficiency, protein efficiency and caloric efficiency are concerned.
