Optimal Solution for Transportation Problems (수송문제의 최적해)

  • This paper proposes an algorithm designed to obtain the optimal solution for transportation problem. The transportation problem could be classified into balanced transportation where supply meets demand, and unbalanced transportation where supply and demand do not converge. The archetypal TSM (Transportation Simplex Method) for this optimal solution firstly converts the unbalanced problem into the balanced problem by adding dummy columns or rows. Then it obtains an initial solution through employment of various methods, including NCM, LCM, VAM, etc. Lastly, it verifies whether or not the initial solution is optimal by employing MODI. The abovementioned algorithm therefore carries out a handful of complicated steps to acquire the optimal solution. The proposed algorithm, on the other hand, skips the conversion stage for unbalanced transportation problem. It does not verify initial solution, either. The suggested algorithm firstly allocates resources so that supply meets demand, in the descending order of its loss cost. Secondly, it optimizes any surplus quantity (the amount by which the initially allocated quantity exceeds demand) in such a way that the loss cost could be minimized Once the above reallocation is terminated, an additional arrangement is carried out by transferring the allocated quantity in columns with the maximum cost to the rows with the minimum transportation cost. Upon application to 2 unbalanced transportation data and 13 balanced transportation data, the proposed algorithm has successfully obtained the optimal solution. Additionally, it generated the optimal solution for 4 data, whose solution the existing methods have failed to obtain. Consequently, the suggested algorithm could be universally applied to the transportation problem.

  • The optimal load distribution for two cooperating robots is studied in this paper, and a new solution approach utilizing force ellipsoid is proposed. The load distribution problem is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem with a quadratic cost function. The limit on instantaneous power is considered in the problem formulation as the joint torque constraints. The optimal solution minimizing energy consumption is obtained using the concept of force ellipsoid and the nonlinear optimization theory. The force ellipsoid provides a useful geometrical insight into the load distribution problem. Despite the presence of the joint torque constraints, the optimal solution is obtained almost as a closed form, in which the joint torques are given in terms of a single scalar parameter that can be obtained numerically by solving a scalar equation.

  • Consider a supply chain where products are produced at a manufacturing system, shipped to a distribution center, and then supplied to customers. The distribution center controls inventory based on a base-stock policy, and whenever a unit of product is demanded by a customer, an order is released to the production system. Unsatisfied demand is backordered, and the inventory and backordered units are a function of the base-stock level. The manufacturing system is modeled as an M/M/s/c queueing system, and orders exceeding the limited buffer capacity are blocked and lost. The throughput of the manufacturing system and the steady state distribution of the outstanding orders are functions of number of servers and buffers of the manufacturing system. There is a profit obtained from throughput and costs due to servers and buffers of the manufacturing system, and also costs due to inventory positions of the distribution center, and we want to maximize the total production profit minus the total cost of the supply chain by simultaneously determining the optimal number of servers and buffers of the manufacturing system and the optimal base-stock level of the distribution center. We develope two algorithms, one analytical but without guarantee of the optimal solution and one optimal but without complete analytical proofs. The problem integrates strategic problem of the manufacturing system with tactical problem of the distribution center in a supply chain.

Optimal Placement of Phasor Measurement Unit for Observation Reliability Enhancement

  • Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) placement is a crucial problem for State Estimation (SE) of the power system, which can ensure that the power network is fully observed. Further, the observation reliability problem of the system has been concerned in the operation conditions. In this paper, based on modified weighted adjacent matrix ($A_w$), an optimal placement method is proposed to solve simultaneously two problems involving the optimal PMU placement problem and the observation reliability enhancement problem of the system. The purpose of the proposed method is to achieve both the minimum total cost and the maximum observation reliability, with a focus on increasing the security of observability, strengthening the observation reliability of buses as well as enhancing the effectiveness of redundancy. Simulations on IEEE 14, 24, 30 and 57 bus test systems are presented to justify the methodology. The results of this study show that the proposed method is not only ensuring the power network having the observability effectively but also enhancing significantly the observation reliability. Therefore, it can be a useful tool for SE of the power system.

A Study on Passive Homing Trajectory for Maximizing Target Information (표적 정보량을 최대화하는 피동 호밍궤적에 관한 고찰)

  • This paper deals with the problem of generating the energy optimal trajectory which is intended to enhance the target tracking performance of a passive homing missile. Noticing that the essence of passive target tracking is the range estimation problem, the target information gathered by passive measurements can be readily analyzed by introducing the range estimator designed in line-of-sight(LOS) frame. Moreover, for the linear filter structure of the suggested range estimator, the cost function associated with the target information is clearly expressed as a function of the line-of-sight rate. Based on this idea, the optimal missile trajectory maximizing the target information is obtained by solving the saddle point problem for an indefinite quadratic cost which consists of the target information and the energy. It is shown that, different from the previous heuristic approaches, the guidance command producing the optimal passive homing trajectory is produced by the modified proportional navigation guidance law whose navigation constant is determined by the weighting coefficient for target information cost.

Organization of the optimal integrated environment for surface mounting machines (표면실장기계의 최적 통합환경 구성)

  • The environment for surface mounting machines plays an important role in a throughput. An approach to organize the optimal integrated environment for surface mounting machines is presented to increase a throughput. An optimization problem is divided into a feeder setting problem and a task sequencing problem. Two algorithms for each problem are proposed. The feeder setting problems is optimized by an algorithm based on heuristic methods. The task sequencing problem is modeled as a TSP(Traveling salesman problem). An algorithm based on a heuristic tour-to-tour improvement method for TSP is proposed to optimize the task sequencing problem. A simulation is carried out to test developed algorithms.

  • This paper considers an optimal base station clustering problem for designing a mobile (wireless) communication network. For a given network with a set of nodes (base stations), the problem is to optimally partition the set of nodes into subsets (each called a cluster) such that the associated inter-cluster traffic is minimized under certain topological constraints and cluster capacity constraints. In the problem analysis, the problem is formulated as an integer programming problem. The integer programming problem is then transformed into a binary integer programming problem, for which the associated linear programming relaxation is solved in a column generation approach assisted by a branch-and-bound procedure. For the column generation, both a heuristic algorithm and a valid inequality approach are exploited. Various numerical examples are solved to evaluate the effectiveness of the LP (Linear Programming) based branch-and-bound algorithm.

  • In this paper, a unified solution of Hankel norm approximation problem is proposed by $\delta$-operator. To derive the main result, all-pass property is derived from the inner and co-inner property in the $\delta$-domain. The solution of all-pass becomes an optimal Hankel norm approximation problem in .delta.-domain through LLFT(Low Linear Fractional Transformation) inserting feedback term $\phi(\gamma)$, which is a free design parameter, to hold the error bound desired against the variance between the original model and the solution of Hankel norm approximation problem. The proposed solution does not only cover continuous and discrete ones depending on sampling interval but also plays a key role in robust control and model reduction problem. The verification of the proposed solution is exemplified via simulation for the zero-order Hankel norm approximation problem and the model reduction problem applied to a 16th order MIMO system.

A Special Case of Three Machine Flow Shop Scheduling

  • This paper considers a special case of a three machine flow shop scheduling problem in which operation processing time of each job is ordered such that machine 1 has the longest processing time, whereas machine 3, the shortest processing time. The objective of the problem is the minimization of the total completion time. Although the problem is simple, its complexity is yet to be established to our best knowledge. This paper first introduces the problem and presents some optimal properties of the problem. Then, it establishes several special cases in which a polynomial-time optimal solution procedure can be found. In addition, the paper proves that the recognition version of the problem is at least binary NP-complete. The complexity of the problem has been open despite its simple structure and this paper finally establishes its complexity. Finally, a simple and intuitive heuristic is developed and the tight worst case bound on relative error of 6/5 is established.

Orbital maneuvers by using feedback linearization method

  • A method for obtaining optimal orbital maneuvers of a space vehicle has been developed by combining feedback linearization method with the elegance of the Lambert's theorem. To obtain solutions to nonlinear orbital maneuver problems. The full nonlinear equations of motion for space vehicle in polar coordinate system are transformed exactly into a controllable linear set in Brunovsky canonical form by using feedback linearization by choosing position vector as fully observable output vector. These equations are used to pose a linear optimal tracking problem with a solutions to Lambert's problem and a linear analytical solution of continuous low thrust problem as reference trajectories.
