  • M/G/1 queueing system is one of the most widely used one to model the real system. When operating a real systems, since it often takes cost, some control policies that change the operation scheme are adopted. In particular, the N-policy is the most popular among many control policies. Almost all researches on queueing system are based on the assumption that the arrival rates of customers into the queueing system is constant, In this paper, we consider the M/G/1 queueing system whose arrival rate varies according to the servers status : idle, set-up and busy states. For this study, we construct the steady state equations of queue lengths by means of the supplementary variable method, and derive the PGF(probability generating function) of them. The L-S-T(Laplace Stieltjes transform) of waiting time and average waiting time are also presented. We also develop an algorithm to find the optimal N-value from which the server starts his set-up. An analysis on the performance measures to minimize total operation cost of queueing system is included. We finally investigate the behavior of system operation cost as the optimal N and arrival rate change by a numerical study.

  • In this paper, a jointly optimal group replacement and spare provisioning policy is presented. Most maintenance policies assume that the spare inventory is always available, but in practice the maintenance schedule is affected by the availability of spare inventory. We present a maintenance-inventory model which jointly optimizes the group replacement interval and spare ordering quantity. Group replacement policy is used when a group of units are put in operation simultaneously. The operating fleet is replaced altogether at a predetermined number of units are failed. A sufficient level of spare inventory is carried to perform a number of group replacement. A cost rate expression which considers the group maintenance cost and inventory holding cost is derived and a heuristic method for searching the optimum value of decision variables is suggested. Numerical examples demonstrate the analytical results and the performance of the presented model.

  • As the generation of renewable energy increases rapidly, the stability of the grid due to its intermittency becomes a problem. The most appropriate way to solve this problem is to combine and operate the renewable generators with the ESS(Energy Storage System). However, since the revenues of operating the ESS are less than the investment cost, many countries are implementing various incentive policies for encouraging investment of the ESS. In this paper we estimated optimal capacity of the ESS to maximize profits of renewable energy generation businesses under the incentive policy of Korea and analyzed the impact of the incentive policy on the future electric power system of Jeju island. The simulation results show that the incentive policy has significantly improved the profitability of the renewable energy businesses generation business. But the volatility of the net demand has increased as the energy stored in the ESS is discharged intensively at the time of the incentive application.

  • We consider a generalized N-policy for an M/M/1 queueing system. The idle server starts to work with ordinary service rate when a customer arrives. If the number of customers in the system reaches N, the service rate gets faster and continues until the system becomes empty. Otherwise, the server finishes the busy period with ordinary service rate. We obtain the limiting distribution of the number of customers in the system. After assigning various operating costs to the system, we show that there exists a unique fast service rate minimizing the long-run average cost per unit time.

  • A system consisting of two continuously and independently operating equipment subject to breakdown and repair, is considered. It is assumed that both equipment age only when in operation, and a group replacement policy is in effect, that is, both equipment are replaced simultaneously by new identical ones as soon as either of them reaches a specified replacement age. First, a system of partial differential equations based on enumerating the various probabilistic events, is derived. Then, solutions of such system of equations for a model considered in the steady-state are obtained. Finally, an economic analysis is performed to determine the optimal replacement ages of both equipment.

  • Operating rules, the basic principle of reservoir operation, are mostly developed from maximum or minimum, mean inflow series so that those rules cannot be used in practical operating situations to estimate the expected benefits or provide the operating policies for uncertainty conditions. Many operating rules based on the deterministic method that considers all operation variables including inflows as known variables can not reflect to uncertainties of inflow variations. Explicit operating rules can be developed for improving the weakness. In this method, stochastic trend of inflow series, one of the reservoir operation variables, can be directly method, the stochastic technique was applied to develop reservoir operating rule. In this study, stochastic dynamic programming using the concepts was applied to develop optimal operating rule for the Chungju reservoir system. The developed operating rules are regarded as a practical usage because the operating policy is following up the basic concept of Lag-1 Markov except for flood season. This method can provide reservoir operating rule using the previous stage's inflow and the current stage's beginning storage when the current stage's inflow cannot be predicted properly.

  • The multi-reservoir operation problem for efficient utilization of water resources involves conflicting objectives, and the problem can be solved by varying weight coefficient on objective functions. Accordingly, decision makers need to choose appropriate weight coefficients balancing the trade-offs among multiple objectives. Although the appropriateness of the weight coefficients may depend on the total amount of water inflow, reservoir operating policy may not be changed to a certain degree for different hydrological conditions on inflow. Therefore, we propose to use fuzzy Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to rank the weight coefficients in consideration of the inflow variation. In this approach, we generate a set of Paretooptimal solutions by applying different weight coefficients on Coordinated Multi-reservoir Operating Model. Then, we rank the Pareto-optimal solutions or the corresponding weight coefficients by using Fuzzy DEA model. With the proposed approach, we can suggest the best weight coefficients that can produce the appropriate Pareto-optimal solution considering the uncertainty of inflow, whereas the general DEA model cannot pinpoint the best weight coefficients.

  • A rapid development and a wide use of the Internet have expanded a network environment. Further, the network environment has become more complex due to a simple and convenient network connection and various services of the Internet. However, the Internet has been constantly exposed to the danger of various network attacks such as a virus, a hacking, a system intrusion, a system manager authority acquisition, an intrusion cover-up and the like. As a result, a network security technology such as a virus vaccine, a firewall, an integrated security management, an intrusion detection system, and the like are required in order to handle the security problems of Internet. Accordingly, a router, which is a key component of the Internet, controls a data packet flow in a network and determines an optimal path thereof so as to reach an appropriate destination. An error of the router or an attack against the router can damage an entire network. This paper relates to a method for RSMS (router security management system) for secure networking based on a security policy. Security router provides functions of a packet filtering, an authentication, an access control, an intrusion analysis and an audit trail in a kernel region. Security policy has the definition of security function against a network intrusion.

  • Recently, RF energy harvesting technology is a promising technology for small-size IoT(Internet of Things) devices such as sensor to resolve battery scarcity problem. When applied to existing cognitive radio networks, this technology can be expected to increase network throughput through the increase of cognitive user's operating time. This paper proposes a optimal channel-selection policy for RF energy harvesting CR networks model where cognitive users in harvesting zone harvest ambient RF energy from transmission by nearby active primary users and the others in non-harvesting zone choose the channel and communicate with their receiver. We consider that primary users and secondary users are distributed as Poisson point processes and contact with their intended receivers at fixed distances. Finally we can derive the optimal frame duration, transmission power and density of secondary user from the proposed model that can maximize the secondary users's throughput under the given several conditions and suggest future directions of research.

  • For many capacity expansion problems, distinct capacity types must be specified to identify capacity at different locations or capacities with different costs and operating characteristics. In this study, a project-sequencing model is developed that allows operating costs to influence the timing decisions for project establishment. Under certain conditions, the power expansion formulation is derived that may be solved through the dynamic programming approach, and its first application to planning in electric power systems is selected to investigate an optimal policy and to show the impact of requiring system to service more than one type of demand. Several sample testing results indicate that in some systems the efficiency of the large nuclear plants is higher than that of smell ones that it may overcome the effects of the drop in reliability.
