  • The main goal of this study was to find an optimal surfactant mixture composition for the development of the best performing cleansing products. Three different surfactants including sodium cocoyl alaninate (SCoA), cocamidopropyl betaine (CPB), and decyl glucoside (DG) were selected, which showed excellent properties in detergency, foaming height, and contamination rate through preliminary experiments. The experiments by simplex centroid design matrix for surfactant mixtures were performed, and the regression analysis was conducted with the experimental data. Surface response model equations, which is statistically significant (p < 0.05), were obtained. The optimal composition of the surfactant mixture was also determined as SCoA (0.22), CPB (0.78), and DG(0.00) from simultaneous optimization of three response variables.

  • This study aimed to investigate the alterations in plasma antioxidant activity after the consumption of a single oral dose of curcumin, vitamin C, and E administered individually or in combination to (i) assess possible synergies or antagonism between the antioxidants and (ii) determine the optimal composition of the antioxidant mixture such that the duration of action is prolonged to beyond that of individual antioxidants. Each antioxidant was administered to male Sprague-Dawley rats, and blood samples were drawn at different time points up to 180 min to measure the plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Five antioxidant compositions (M1-M5) were evaluated to assess the possible synergies or antagonisms among them and to determine the optimal composition of the antioxidant mixture. Blood samples were collected up to 360 min post-consumption. A single oral dose of individual antioxidants significantly increased the TAC values; however, the time to reach the peak TAC value varied. Among the 5 antioxidant compositions, M2 exhibited the highest and most prolonged antioxidant effect in plasma; this was greater than the proportional sum of the effects of the individual antioxidants in the composition. This result indicates a synergistic interaction among antioxidants in the optimal composition M2.

  • Purpose: This paper addresses a case study of developing a flame retardant wood-plastic composites (WPC) by adding tannic acid to the existing synthetic wood. The optimal mixing ratios of six components are explored to minimize the burning time using two mixture designs. Methods: In the preliminary experiment, six components are considered to find important components and their ranges. Seven D-optimal mixture design points are generated. Two points are removed for the balance of plastic components to be maintained, and the remaining five points are augmented with two basic compositions. Four components are selected to be considered in the main experiment. In the main experiment, pellets are extruded at the eight mixture design points. In-house testing of burning time is executed three times. Specimens made of pellets from two promising flame retardant compositions are sent to the accredited laboratories and tested. Results: The test results are as follows: 1) The best composition (Wood flour, Tannic acid, PE, Lubricant) = (25, 41, 10, 2) (wt%) shows the burning time of 1 second, which is 9-fold improvement compared to the the burning time of 9 seconds from the existing composition (58, 0, 10, 2) (wt%). 2) The second best composition (41, 25, 10, 2) (wt%) results in the burning time of 2 seconds. This composition is inferior to the best composition in terms of the flame retardancy, but more economical since it needs less tannic acid which is 100-fold expensive than the wood flour. Conclusion: Flame retardant compositions are found by adding tannic acid to the existing WPC employing optimal mixture designs. This case study will be helpful to practitioners who try to develop new products with additional physical properties with as small number of experimental trials as possible. Future research direction includes exploring conditions which satisfy both performance level and cost limitation simultaneously.

  • The electrochemical performance of Li-S cells was investigated in various ternary electrolyte solutions composed of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), tetra(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (TGM), and 1,3-dioxolane (DOX). The discharge capacity values and cycle data obtained at each composition were statistically treated with the Minitab program to obtain mixture contour plots, from which the optimal composition of the ternary solvent systems was predicted. The discharge capacities and capacity retention were quite dependent on the electrolyte composition. It was estimated from the contour plots of the capacity at 1.0 C that the discharge capacity sharply increased with a decrease in the TGM content. High capacities greater than 900 mAh/g at 1.0 C were expected for the electrolyte composition with a volume ratio of DME/TGM/DOX = 1/0/1. In contrast, it was predicted from the mixture contour plot of the capacity retention that the cycle performance would significantly increase with an increase in the DME content.

  • The ionic conductivity of $Li_2O-ZrO_2-SiO_2$ glasses has been designed and analyzed on the basis of a mixture design experiment with constraints. Fitted models for the activation energy and the ionic conductivity are as follows: $Q(kJ/moi)=54.8565x_1+144.825x_2+133.846x_3-170.908x_1x_3-334.338x_2x_3$ $log{\sigma}(300K)=-5.00245x_1-1.17876x_2-15.5173x_3+17.4522x_1x_3$. The electrical properties are very sensitive to the ratio of $Li_2O/SiO_2$. The effect of $ZrO_2$ is less than that of this ratio but $ZrO_2$ component attributes to the reduction of the activation energy. The optimal composition for best ionic conduction based on these fitted models is $55Li_2O{\cdot}10ZrO_2{\cdot}35SiO_2$. Its activation energy and ionic conductivity at 300 K are 46.98 kJ/mol and $1.08{\times}10^{-5}{\Omega}^{-1}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$, respectively.

  • Various commercial collagen mixtures aimed at improving the quality of meat products are available, but the optimal composition is unclear. This study aimed to compare the functional properties, including physicochemical characteristics and lipid oxidative stability, of loin ham marinated with three commercial collagen mixtures sold as food additives. The addition of collagen mixtures led to significant increases in the moisture content, water holding capacity (WHC), cooking yield, and instrumental tenderness, regardless of the type of collagen mixture. In particular, meat samples containing collagen mixture C showed the highest (p<0.05) WHC and tenderness among all groups. Furthermore, collagen mixture B induced increases (p<0.05) in pH values in both raw and cooked samples. The $a^*$ values of samples with collagen mixtures were lower (p<0.05) than those of samples without collagen mixtures. All collagen mixtures effectively improved oxidative stability during 7 days of storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The samples containing collagen mixture B had the lowest lipid oxidation (p<0.05) among groups. These results indicated that collagen mixture C could be used in injection brine to enhance the quality characteristics of meat products, particularly the WHC and tenderness. Collagen mixture A could be used for meat products with high fat contents based on its ability to improve lipid oxidative stability during long-term storage.

  • The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of feeding pelletized broccoli byproducts (PBB) on milk yield and milk composition in dairy cows. In Trial 1, an in vitro gas test determined the optimal replacement level of PBB in a concentrate mixture in a mixed substrate with Chinese wild ryegrass hay (50:50, w/w) at levels of 0, 10%, 20%, 30%, or 40% (dry matter basis). When the concentrate was replaced by PBB at a level of 20%, no adverse effects were found on the gas volume or its rate constant during ruminal fermentation. In trial 2, 24 lactating cows (days in milk = $170.4{\pm}35$; milk yield = $30{\pm}3kg/d$; body weight = $580{\pm}13kg$) were divided into 12 blocks based on day in milk and milk yield and randomly allocated to two dietary treatments: a basic diet with or without PBB replacing 20% of the concentrate mixture. The feeding trial lasted for 56 days; the first week allowed for adaptation to the diet. The milk composition was analyzed once a week. No significant difference in milk yield was observed between the two groups (23.5 vs 24.2 kg). A significant increase was found in milk fat content in the PBB group (p<0.05). Inclusion of PBB did not affect milk protein, lactose, total solids or solids-not-fat (p>0.05). These results indicated that PBB could be included in dairy cattle diets at a suitable level to replace concentrate mixture without any adverse effects on dairy performance.

  • In this research, the composition of the feed stream is optimized in pressure swing distillation for separating of methanol-acetone. It is well known that the composition of feed stream in pressure swing distillation system has a great influence on the feasibility to separate mixture. The workscope of this study is to show better separation efficiency at specified pressure by controlling the composition of feed stream with recycle of two products. Based on the base case without recycle flow, two processes are designed that methanol and acetone are recycled to feed stream, respectively. Each processes are compared with total annual cost and as a result, the base case without recycle flow are most favorable.

  • Using the design of experiment (DOE), factors affecting the particle size of hydrated liquid crystalline vesicles containing a high content of ceramide were analyzed and the mixture composition was optimized. Manufacturing temperature, amount of ethanol, and ultrasonic time were selected as the main variables affecting the droplet size of the vesicles, and the effect of these variables on the droplet size was examined through the signal to noise (S/N) ratios of Taguchi method and ANOVA analysis. In addition, mixture composition experiments of three lipid components constituting the vesicle membrane, hydrogenated phosphatidyl choline (HPC), cholesterol (Chol), and ceramide (Cer), were performed according to the simplex central design matrix of the mixture. Regression analysis was conducted with the experimental data to obtain a model equation, and the optimal mixing composition of the three lipid components to minimize the vesicle droplet size was determined as HPC (0.6), Chol (0.1), and Cer (0.3).
