  • In this paper, we propose and observe the Adaptive Modulation system with optimal Turbo Coded V-BLAST (Vertical-Bell-lab Layered Space-Time) technique that is applied the extrinsic information from MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) Decoder with Iterative Decoding to use as a priori probability in two decoding procedures of V-BLAST: ordering and slicing. Also, comparing with the Adaptive Modulation system using conventional Turbo Coded V-BLAST technique that is simply combined V-BLAST with Turbo Coding scheme, we observe how much throughput performance has been improved. As a result of simulation, in the Adaptive Modulation systems with several Turbo Coded V-BLAST techniques, the optimal Turbo Coded V-BLAST technique has higher throughput gain than the conventional Turbo Coded V-BLAST technique. Especially, the results show that the proposed scheme achieves the gain of 1.5 dB SNR compared to the conventional system at 2.5 Mbps throughput.

  • In this paper, we explore the utility of recently discovered multiple-antenna techniques (namely MIMO techniques) for medium access control (MAC) design and routing in mobile ad hoc networks. Specifically, we focus on ad hoc networks where the spatial diversity technique is used to combat fading and achieve robustness in the presence of user mobility. We first examine the impact of spatial diversity on the MAC design, and devise a MIMO MAC protocol accordingly. We then develop analytical methods to characterize the corresponding saturation throughput for MIMO multi-hop networks. Building on the throughout analysis, we study the impact of MIMO MAC on routing. We characterize the optimal hop distance that minimizes the end-to-end delay in a large network. For completeness, we also study MAC design using directional antennas for the case where the channel has a strong line of sight (LOS) component. Our results show that the spatial diversity technique and the directional antenna technique can enhance the performance of mobile ad hoc networks significantly.

  • With the increasing demands for mobile wireless sensor networks in recent years, designing an energy-efficient clustering and routing protocol has become very important. This paper provides an analytical model to evaluate the power consumption of a mobile sensor node. Based on this, a clustering algorithm is designed to optimize the energy efficiency during cluster head formation. A genetic algorithm technique is employed to find the near-optimal threshold for residual energy below which a node has to give up its role of being the cluster head. This clustering algorithm along with a hybrid routing concept is applied as the near-optimal energy-efficient routing technique to increase the overall efficiency of the network. Compared to the mobile low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy protocol, the simulation studies reveal that the energy-efficient routing technique produces a longer network lifetime and achieves better energy efficiency.

  • Purpose: Biswas and Sarkar [11] found the availability of a system maintained through several imperfect repairs before a replacement is allowed. However they missed a part of coefficients in the integration. This paper corrects the erratum of Biswas and Sarkar [11] and performs the reliability analysis incorporating the optimal number of imperfect repairs. Methods: To find the singularities and residues of the suitable complex-valued function for the availability, the computer package Matlab is used. Also the performance measures are calculated by defining and assigning costs. Results: The accurate availability functions with respect to the numbers of imperfect repairs and the optimal number of imperfect repairs before a replacement are obtained. Conclusion: The reliability for a system under imperfect repair before a replacement is analyzed using Fourier transform technique.

  • In this paper, we develop an optimal intelligent digital redesign method for a class of fuzzy-model-based controllers, effective for stabilization of continuous-time complex nonlinear systems. Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model is used to extend the results of the classical digital redesign technique to complex nonlinear systems. Unlike the conventional intelligent digital redesign technique reported in the literature, the proposed method utilized the recently developed LMI optimization technique to obtain a digitally redesigned fuzzy-model-based controller. Precisely speaking, the intelligent digital redesign problem is converted to an equivalent optimization problem, and the LMI optimization method is used to find the digitally redesigned fuzzy-model-based controller. A numerical example is provided to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

  • Sorting time is one of the most important issues for auto IC test handling systems. In actual system, because of too much path, reducing the computing time for finding a sorting path is the key way to enhancing the system performance. The exhaustive path search technique can not be used for real systems. This paper proposes heuristic sorting algorithm to find the minimal sorting time. The suggested algorithm is basically based on the best-first search technique and multi-level search technique. The results are close to the optimal solutions and computing time is greately reduced also. Therefore the proposed algorthm can be effectively used for real-time sorting process in auto IC test handling systems.

  • A computer-aided robust design (CARD) technique is developed to search for the design variables, optimal as well as robust in the sense of Taguchi method. The CARD technique can effectively handle inequality problems by employing the variable penalty method, and dynamic problems with many design variables and/or with mixed discrete and continuous variables. It is also capable of providing contributions of each design variables to the object funtion and information for future designs. As the illustrative examples, two dynamic systems, engine mounting system and in-line feeder, are treated.

  • In this paper, the return link of interactive GEO satellite network providing multimedia services is considered. First, we classify data by delay characteristics, and analyze the numbers of expected lost packets and expected delay packets for each data class of each terminal. Next we mathematically formulate optimal rate scheduling model to minimize the weighted sum of the numbers of expected lost packets and expected delay packets considering priority of each data class. We also suggest a dynamic rate scheduling scheme based on Lagrangean relaxation technique and subgradient technique to solve the proposed model in a fast time. Extensive experiments show that the proposed scheme provides encouraging results.

  • An optimal design technique is used as a systematic approach to analyze the worst case of a circulating type ropeway for a given geometry and operating conditions. Worst case is meant here the case when the positions and weights of the cars are so conditioned that the minimum of all the reaction forces between the main rope and the towers is minimum. In the course of this study, a general theory for the deflections and tensions of the main rope were also derived taking into account of the variation of the weights and positions of the individual cars. And through an analysis of example ropeways, some general conditions for the worst case are deduced.

  • A Hierarchical vector Quantization scheme is implemented and an optimal thresholding technique of quadtree segmentation for performing high quality low bit rate image compression is proposes. A mathematical model is constructed under the assumption that the standard deviations of sub-blocks are larger than or equal to the standard deviation of the upper level block which is generated by merging of sub-blocks. This thresholding technique based on the mathematical modeling allows producing about 1 dB improved performance in terms of PSNR at most ranges of bit rates over the quadtree coder, which is based on MSE for quadtree segmentation.
