  • Railway operators have given a lot of efforts to determine the railway route of the minimum cost. In order to determine the optimal alignment, the alignment should be allocated satisfying the design criteria on various geographical condition with the minimum earth works. The determination of the optimal railway alignment is a kind of combination optimization because that must consider various design elements. This study developed a numerical model to determine the optimal railway alignment with the minimum construction cost. The problem was analyzed by the genetic algorithm, and the concept of the optimal alignment was established with the results from the analyses. The methodology was applied to a fictitious rail construction section and the result was evaluated. This methodology is meaningful considering the fact that the cost for energy is greater than that of the construction.

  • The analysis of optimal infiltration path is one of the representative fields in which the GIS technology can be useful for the military purpose. Usually the analysis of the optimal path is done with network data. However, for military purpose, it often needs to be done with raster data. Because raster data needs far more computation than network data, it is difficult to apply the methods usually used in network data, such as Dijkstra algorithm. The genetic algorithm, which has shown great outcomes in optimization problems, was applied. It was used to minimize the detection probability of infiltration route. 2D binary array genes and its crossover and mutation were suggested to solve this problem with raster data. 30 tests were performed for each population size, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000. With each generation, more adoptable routes survived and made their children routes. Results indicate that as the generations increased, average detection probability decreased and the routes converged to the optimal path. Also, as the population size increases, more optimal routes were found. The suggested genetic algorithm successfully finds the optimal infiltration route, and it shows better performance with larger population.

  • This paper suggests a multipath establishing scheme for ad hoc networks. Data paths are established by on-demand manner. Multipath are made as a sequence of route control message exchange at route setup process. Multipath can be used as a backup path or load balancing for data exchange. Proposed scheme uses a one-hop pre-search scheme for establishing multipath between source and destination. When a node selects a next node for route reply, the node finds optimal route by exchanging route information with neighbor nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed multipath scheme has better split characteristics among multipath and higher route survivability at the environment where nodes are moving.

  • Unlike previous studies on the optimum route of the ship operating on th ocean, this study proposed an optimization method for the route planning of the ship operating on the coast. In general, passenger ships on the coast navigate along the waypoints indicated in the authorized route. Therefore this study propose objective function considering the braking power and time to determine the speed between waypoints, and the optimum speed was determined by applying the proposed method to the actual route of the passenger ship between Mokpo and Jeju.

  • This research attempts to develop 4D CAD function to support optimal road design by expanding the existing 4D CAD utilization system, which focused on construction phase, to the design phase. The functions such as earthwork simulation for selecting of road alignment, alternative route simulation and structure type simulation were suggested as functions to support road design. Through those virtual reality (VR) functions, visual confirmation of the condition of route and earthwork Is possible by the developed system, and an optimal alternative route can be selected by carrying out layout simulation of the alternative route. The functions presented in this research provide the decision making tools based virtual model for efficient support to road design.

  • In this study, a GIS-application model to determine the optimal route of eco-friendly forest roads and to evaluate the environmental and engineering features of the route was developed. The model consists of five modules for managing spatial and attribute data, determining the optimal route for forest road projection, evaluating environmental and engineering efficiency of forest roads, analyzing characteristics of mountain terrains and report-writing. Using the pull-down menu system, these modules were integrated to be user-friendly for forest field practitioners. Visual Basic 6.0 and Avenue were used as the programming tool and the commercial GIS softwares, ArcView 3.1, Spatial Analyst and 3-D Analyst were used as the basic engine of the model for GIS analysis. In this paper, discussed are the principles for forest road projection and evaluation and structures and application features of the model.

  • Intelligent maritime traffic information service for maritime traffic safety operates a service that provides safe and efficient optimal safety routes considering information such as water depth, maritime safety law, weather information, and fuel consumption. However, from a service user's point of view, they prefer a route that suits their personal navigation experience and style, such as unnecessary detours and conservative safety distances for maritime objects. In this study, the optimal safety route can be extracted based on the experience of service users without reflecting the separate maritime environment by adjusting the weight of the trunk line for the area where the ship frequently navigates with the ship's track data collected through LTE-M model was studied.

  • This study developed a bus route sketch (BRS) methodology for utilizing bus route design and operation steps in practice and evaluated the feasibility of the method. The BRS methodology consists of three steps: transportation zoning suitable for the provider and users of bus transit service; determining the bus operation route based on established transportation zones and path combination; optimizing the operation route based on the estimation of route alternatives in terms of the multi-performance measures from the standpoints of bus-transit service provider and user. The results of a case study showed that the estimation scores from the perspectives of provider and user were improved significantly from 8.83 and 7.13 to 9.50 and 9.89, respectively. Because the BRS method was designated and developed to be suitable for field application for route planning and operation, the method can be used instantly and directly to estimate and adjust the on-operation bus transit line and route design.

  • We develop an intelligent information system in a multilayer electronic supply chain network. Using the internet for supply chain management (SCM) is a key interest for contemporary managers and researchers. It has been realized that the internet can facilitate SCM by making real time information available and enabling collaboration between trading partners. Here, we propose a multi-agent system to analyze the performance of the elements of a supply network based on the attributes of the information flow. Each layer consists of elements which are differentiated by their performance throughout the supply network. The proposed agents measure and record the performance flow of elements considering their web interactions for a dynamic route selection. A dynamic programming approach is applied to determine the optimal route for a customer in the end-user layer.
