  • Optimal engineering design is challenging because nonlinear objective functions need to be evaluated in a high-dimensional space. This paper presents a data-mining aided optimal design method. The method is employed in designing an optimal multi-station fixture layout. Its benefit is demonstrated by a comparison with currently available optimization methods.

  • In this paper, optimal block designs for complete diallel crosses are proposed. These optimal block designs for estimating general combining abilities are constructed by using balanced incomplete block designs and nested balanced incomplete block designs. Also, the efficiency of the optimal block design obtained through this method is reported in table.

  • This study was motivated how it might be possible to validate structured sampling with orthogonal array for optimal design of a pin. The Taguchi method by orthogonal array, one of the structured sampling methods, has much advantage that is row cost and time saving for experiments. But this method has been applied in limited areas especially for mechanical problems. In this study, we experimented whether the structured sampling is useful for applying optimal design of mechanical elements. For the experiment, we first set up a mechanical problem which was related to determining optimal parameters associated a pin's crack occurred inside a hole. We, then, calculated combination of...

  • In this paper, optimal block designs for complete diallel crosses are proposed. These optimal block designs are constructed by using triangular partially balanced incomplete designs derived from symmetric balanced incomplete block designs. Also, it is shown that block designs for complete dialle crosses derived from complementary designs of triangular designs are optimal block designs.

  • In this paper, we derive the Γ-limit of functionals pertaining to some optimal material distribution problems that involve a variable exponent, as the exponent goes to infinity. In addition, we prove a relaxation result for supremal optimal design functionals with respect to the weak-∗ L(Ω; [0, 1])× W1,p0 (Ω;ℝm) weak topology.

  • In this paper, the numerical methods of finding the optimal position of optical phase conjugator(OPC) and the optimal fiber dispersions are proposed, which are able to effectively compensate overall channels in $8{\times}40$ Gbps WDM system with non zero-dispersion shifted fiber(NZ-DSF) as an optical fiber. And the compensation characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the optimal parameter values induced in this approach are very useful to effectively compensate overall channels in WDM system with OPC. And, it is confirmed that two optimal parameters depend on each other, but less related with the searching procedure. The methods proposed in this research will be expected to alternate with the method of making a symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in real optical link which is a serious problem of applying the OPC into multi-channels WDM system.

  • The numerical methods of finding out the optimal position of optical phase conjugator (OPC) and the optimal fiber dispersions are prosed, which are able to effectively compensate overall channels in $8{\times}40Gbps$Gbps WDM system with non zero - dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) as an optical fiber. And BER characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with the currently used mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the applying two induced optimal parameters into WDM system contribute to reduce power penalty to 4 times than that of WDM system with the conventional MSSI. Thus, the methods proposed in this research will be expected to alternate with the method of making a symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in real optical link which generates a serious problem if it was not made but it is the condition in the case of applying the OPC into multi-channels WDM system.

  • To find optimal path is killer application in the telematics system. The shortest path of conventional system, however, isn't always optimal path. That is, the path with minimum travelling time could be defined as optimal path in the road networks. There are techniques and algorithms for finding optimal path. Hierarchical path algorithm categorizes road networks into major layer and minor layer so that the performance of operational time increases. The path searched is accurate as much as optimal path. At above 2 system, a method to allocate minor roads to major road region influences the performance extremely. This paper proposes methods to determine search space for selecting major roads in the hierarchical path algorithm. In addition, methods which apply the proposed methods to hierarchical route algorithm is presented.

  • Ship optimal design is a multi-objective decision-making process and its optimal solution does not exit in general. It is a problem in which the decision-maker is very interested that an effective solution is how to be found which has good characteristic and is substituted for optimal solution in a sense. In the previous methods of multi-objective decision-making, the weighting coefficients are decided from the point of view of individuals which have a bit sub-jective an unilateral behavior. in order to fairly and objectively decide the weighting coeffi-cients, which are considered to be optimal in all system of multi-objective decision-making and satisfactory solution to the decision-maker, the pater presents a method of applying the Technology of the Biggest Entropy. It is proved that the method described in the paper is very feasible and effective be means of a practical example of ship optimal design.

  • In this paper, we present a new technique for the optimal local decomposition of convex structuring elements on a hexagonal grid, which are used as templates for morphological image processing. Each basis structuring element in a local decomposition is a local convex structuring element, which can be contained in hexagonal window centered at the origin. Generally, local decomposition of a structuring element results in great savings in the processing time for computing morphological operations. First, we define a convex structuring element on a hexagonal grid and formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions to decompose a convex structuring element into the set of basis convex structuring elements. Further, a cost function was defined to represent the amount of computation or execution time required for performing dilations on different computing environments and by different implementation methods. Then the decomposition condition and the cost function are applied to find the optimal local decomposition of convex structuring elements, which guarantees the minimal amount of computation for morphological operation. Simulation shows that optimal local decomposition results in great reduction in the amount of computation for morphological operations. Our technique is general and flexible since different cost functions could be used to achieve optimal local decomposition for different computing environments and implementation methods.
