Servo performance of a disk drive is greatly affected by the mechanical resonance frequencies of the head gimbal assembly (HSA). It is important factor to allow broader bandwidths for servo system in improving overall drive performance. In this paper, an optimal design for ODD suspension is attempted to increase resonance frequencies in tracking direction. Initial model was designed and the design parameter was defined to the model. The mode frequency variation for the change of design parameter was observed by modal analysis using the finite element method(FEM). The sensitivity matrix was calculated from the observed data and so through sensitivity analysis, an optimized ODD suspension was designed to have the higher resonant frequency than the initial model.

Laboratory tests were performed to investigate the dielectric property of saturated sands contaminated by heavy metals solution at low frequency. Differences of contamination and the real part of dielectric constant depend on heavy metal concentration was measured at low frequency, 100KHz below. The optimal frequency to develop the detection potentials of monitoring was 1KHz, 10KHz, 100KHz. At this frequency, Heavy metal contamination of saturated sands contamination can be recommended by analysis of complex dielectric constant.
Operational modal analysis is being widely used in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Common research fields include optimal design and rehabilitation under dynamic loads, structural health monitoring, modification and control of dynamic response and analytical model updating. In many practical cases, influence of noise contamination in the recorded data makes it difficult to identify the modal parameters accurately. In this paper, an improved frequency domain method called Enhanced Least Square Complex Frequency (eLSCF) is developed to extract modal parameters from noisy recorded data. The proposed method makes the use of pre-defined approximate mode shape vectors to refine the cross-power spectral density matrix and extract fundamental frequency for the mode of interest. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated using an example five story shear frame loaded by random excitation and different noise signals.
In this study, with the FEM we analyzed the variation of the resonance frequency, bandwidth, and sound pressure of the Tonpilz transducer in relation to its design variables. Through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, we derived functional forms of the resonance frequency, bandwidth, and sound pressure in terms of the design variables. By applying the constrained optimization technique, SQP-PD, to the derived function, we determined the optimal structure of the transducer that could provide the highest sound pressure level at the resonance frequency of 30,000 Hz and having the -3 dB bandwidth more than 10%, The validity of the optimized results was confirmed through comparison of the optimal performance with that of the FEA. The optimal design method proposed could reflect all the cross-coupled effects of multiple structural variables, and could determine the detailed geometry of the transducer with great efficiency and rapidity.
Flood frequency analysis commonly used to design the hydraulic structures to minimize flood damage includes uncertainty. Therefore, the most appropriate design flood within a uncertainty should be selected in the final stage of a hydraulic structure, but related studies were rarely carried out. The total expected cost function introduced into the flood frequency analysis is a new approach for determining the optimal design flood. This procedure has been used as UNCODE (UNcertainty COmpliant DEsign), but the application has not yet been introduced in South Korea. This study introduced the mathematical procedure of UNCODE and calculated the optimal design flood using the annual maximum inflow of hydroelectric dams located in the Bukhan River system and results were compared with that of the existing flood frequency. The parameter uncertainty was considered in the total expected cost function using the Gumbel and the GEV distribution, and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm was used to sample the parameters. In this study, cost function and damage function were assumed to be a first-order linear function. It was found that the medians of the optimal design flood for 4 Hydroelectric dams, 2 probability distributions, and 2 return periods were calculated to be somewhat larger than the design flood by the existing flood frequency analysis. In the future, it is needed to develop the practical approximated procedure to UNCODE.

Estimation of crop consumptive use is a key term of agricultural water resource systems design and operation. The 10-year return period drought has special aspects as a reference period in design process of irrigation systems in terms of agricultural water demand analysis so that crop evapotranspiration (ETc) about the return period also has to be analyzed to assist understanding of crop water requirement of paddy rice. In this study, The ETc of 10-year return period drought was computed using frequency analysis by 54 meteorological stations. To find an optimal probability distribution, 8 types of probability distribution function were tested by three the goodness of fit tests including ${\chi}^2$(Chi-Square), K-S (Kolmogorov-Smirnov) and PPCC (Probability Plot Correlation Coefficient). Optimal probability distribution function was selected the 2-parameter Log-Normal (LN2) distribution function among 8 distribution functions. Using the two selected distribution functions, the ETc of 10-year return period drought was estimated for 54 meteorological stations and compared with prior study results suggested by other researchers.
In this study, the optimal location of the MR fluid segments in a partially treated laminated composite sandwich plate has been identified to maximize the natural frequencies and the loss factors. The finite element formulation is used to derive the governing differential equations of motion for a partially treated laminated composite sandwich plate embedded with MR fluid and rubber material as the core layer and laminated composite plate as the face layers. An optimization problem is formulated and solved by combining finite element analysis (FEA) and genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain the optimal locations to yield maximum natural frequency and loss factor corresponding to first five modes of flexural vibration of the sandwich plate with various combinations of weighting factors under various boundary conditions. The proposed methodology is validated by comparing the natural frequencies evaluated at optimal locations of MR fluid pockets identified through GA coupled with FEA and the experimental measurements. The converged results suggest that the optimal location of MR fluid pockets is strongly influenced not only by the boundary conditions and modes of vibrations but also by the objectives of maximization of natural frequency and loss factors either individually or combined. The optimal layout could be useful to apply the MR fluid pockets at critical components of large structure to realize more efficient and compact vibration control mechanism with variable damping.

In AGPS method, user position can be obtained even in the shadow region by improving signal sensitivity. A hybrid long integration scheme employing both coherent and non-coherent integration method is commonly used in AGPS receivers. Because coherent loss increases as residual frequency become large, residual frequency should be minimized to maximize coherent integration gain. This paper presents performance analysis of residual frequency estimator using FFT in fine-time assistance AGPS method. Considering the hardware complexity and the estimation accuracy, optimal length of FFT is proposed for GPS L1 C/A signal. Signal sensitivity for estimating the residual frequency is also analysed. By field experimental results, it is found that the residual frequency can be successfully estimated using 1 second snap-shot data when GPS signal strength is larger than -150 dBm and its RMS error is 3Hz.

This paper presents the results of the structural analysis and optimal design of the ROV to be operated at 6000m depth in the ocean. This will be the first domestic deep-sea ROV operating with an AUV and a launcher equipped with robot arms and the current weight is about 3 ton. initial optimal dimension of the frame is determined based on the stress analysis using FEA code ANSYS and design sensitivity and optimization results. The current design is the initial design and there is a possibility to change the design according to the modification of material, equipments and array of structure.

Conical horn is used in many high frequency ultrasonic horns, to achieve a longitudinal vibration mode across a wide ultrasonic tool horn output surface. Modal analysis is method for designing tuned ultrasonic tool horn and for the prediction natural frequency of ultrasonic tool horn vibration mode. The design of ultrasonic horn is based on prototype estimate obtained by FEM analysis. The FEM simulated ultrasonic tool horn is built and characterized experimentally through laser vibrometer and electrical impedance analysis. In this paper, FEM analysis is developed to predict the natural frequency of ultrasonic tool horn and use of in the optimal design of ultrasonic horn shape.
