In this paper the new intensity measures (IMs) for probabilistic seismic analysis of RC high-rise buildings with core wall structural system are proposed. The existing IMs are analysed and the new optimal ones are presented. The newly proposed IMs are based on the existing ones which: 1) comprise a wider range of frequency velocity spectrum content and 2) are defined as the integral along the velocity spectrum. In analysis characteristics of optimal IMs such as: efficiency, practicality, proficiency and sufficiency are considered. As prototype buildings, RC high-rise buildings with core wall structural system and with characteristic heights: 20-storey, 30-storey and 40-storey, are selected. The non-linear 3D models of the prototype buildings are constructed. 720 non-linear time-history analyses are conducted for 60 ground motion records with a wide range of magnitudes, distances to source and various soil types. Statistical processing of results and detailed regression analysis are performed and appropriate demand models which relate IMs to demand measures (DMs), are obtained. The conducted analysis has shown that the newly proposed IMs can efficiently predict the DMs with minimum dispersion and satisfactory practicality as compared to the other commonly used IMs (e.g., PGA and $S_a(T_1)$). The newly proposed IMs overcome difficulties in calculating of integral along the velocity spectrum and present adequate replacement for IMs which comprise a wider range of frequency velocity spectrum content.

This study was conducted to draw design rainfall for the regional design rainfall derived by the optimal distribution and method of frequency analysis. The design rainfalls were calculated by the regional and at-site analysis for Log-Pearson type III and GEV distributions and were compared with Relative efficiency(RE) which is ratio of Relative root-mean-square error(RRMSE) by the regional and at-site analysis for Log-Pearson type III and GEV distributions. Consequently, optimal design rainfalls following the regions and consecutive durations were derived by the regional frequency analysis for GEV distribution and design rainfall maps were drawn by GIS techniques.

In this study, the optimal driving frequency was derived through finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize the developed piezoelectric ultrasonic medical devices(PUMD) for bone surgery. The core of the PUMD is the piezoelectric ceramic (PZT), which is a vibrator that generates vibration energy. The piezoelectric ceramic shows the maximum current value with respect to the input voltage at the resonance frequency, which generates the maximum mechanical vibration. In the past, various studies have been conducted related to the analysis of PUMD, but most of the research so far has been limited to free vibration analysis. However, in order to derive the accurate resonant frequency, the initial stress generated by bolt tightening in the bolt-clamped Langevin type transducer (BLT) must be considered. In this study, after designing a PUMD, the driving performance according to the bolt tightening value was analyzed through FEA, and this was experimentally verified. First, the resonance mode and frequency response were confirmed through modal and harmonic analysis at 20-40 kHz, which is known as the optimal driving frequency band of PUMD for bone surgery. In addition, the design of the PUMD was confirmed by checking the mechanical behavior of the tip and the piezoelectric ceramic at the resonant frequency. Consequentially, the characteristic evaluation was performed, and it was confirmed that the resonant frequency result derived through the FEA was reasonable. Through this study, we presented a more rational FEA method than before for BLT transducers. We expect that this will shorten the time and cost of developing a PUMD, and will enable the development of more stable and high-quality products.

This study presents an H$_{\infty}$ optimal controller synthesis by the frequency domain analysis of weighting function. The main purpose of our study is to visualize weighting function domains and open loop transfer function domains that satisfy robustness and performance. Also we aim to simplify the iterative algorithm for H$\infty$ optimal controller synthesis. We report that the designed regulator by the proposed method in this paper satisfies the desired specifications and performance in spite of the plant uncertainty variation at any operating point.

On this study. we improved the efficiency applying algorithm that is repeatedly using table of orthogonal array in discrete design space and filling a defect of gradient method in continuous design space. we showed optimal ply angle that maximized 1st natural frequency of CFRP laminated composite plate without a hole and with a hole by each aspect ratio. In the case of CFRP laminated composite plate without a hole, we confirmed the reliance and efficiency of algorithm in comparison with the result of optimization achievement repeatedly using statistical table of orthogonal array of experimental design and the BFGS optimal design method.
This paper investigates the optimal locations of internal point supports in a symmetric crossply laminated rectangular plate for maximum fundamental frequency of vibration. The method used for solving this optimization problem involves the Rayleigh-Ritz method for the vibration analysis and the simplex method of Nelder and Mead for the iterative search of the optimum support locations. Being a continuum method, the Rayleigh-Ritz method allows easy handling of the changing point support locations during the optimization search. Rectangular plates of various boundary conditions, aspect ratios, composed of different numbers of layers, and with one, two and three internal point supports are analysed. The interesting results on the optimal locations of the point supports showed that (a) there are multiple solutions; (b) the locations are dependent on both the plate aspect ratios and the number of layers (c) the fundamental frequency may be raised significantly with appropriate positioning of the point supports.

This paper presents the parameter study of multiple tuned liquid damper (MTLCD) applied to the 76-story benchmark building. A parameter study involves the effects of number of TLCD, frequency range, and central tuning frequency ratio, which are important parameters of MTLCD. The performance of MTLCD is carried out numerical analysis which reflects the nonlinear property of liquid motion. The parameters of TLCD exist different each optimal values according to mass ratio. The performance of single-TLCD (STLCD) is sensitive for tuning frequency ratio. Therefore, MTLCD is proposed to protect such the shortcoming of STLCD. The result of numerical analysis presents improved performance for robustness of MTLCD

This paper deals with the development of a realistic shape optimization of damaged columns that are subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces, using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The analysis is based on the design of the most optimized shape of the column under the constraint of constant weight, considering the Static, Vibrational, and Flutter characteristics. Under the action of conservative and non-conservative longitudinal forces, an elastic column loses its stability. A numerical analysis based on FEM has been performed on a uniform damaged column, to compute the fundamental buckling load, vibration frequency, and flutter load, under various end restraints. An optimization search based on the Genetic Algorithm is then executed, to find the optimal shape design of the column. The optimized column references the one having the highest buckling load, highest vibration frequency, and highest flutter load, among all the possible shapes of the column, for a given volume. A comparison is then made between the values obtained for the optimized damaged column, and those obtained for the optimized undamaged column. The comparison reveals that the incorporation of damage in the column alters its optimal shape to only a certain extent. Also, the critical load and frequency values for the optimized damaged column are comparatively low, compared with those obtained for the optimized undamaged column. However, these results hold true only for moderate-intensity damage cases. For high intensity damage, the optimal shape may not remain the same, and may vary, according to the severity of damage.

The performance of an acoustic transducer is determined by the effects of many design variables. and mostly the influences of these design variables are not linearly independent of each other To achieve the optimal performance of an acoustic transducer, we must consider the cross-coupled effects of the design variables. In this study with the FEM. we analyzed the variation of the resonance frequency and sound pressure of a flextensional transducer in relation to Its design variables. Through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, we derived functional forms of the resonance frequency and sound pressure in terms of the design variables, and with which we determined the optimal structure of the transducer by means of a constrained optimization technique, SQP-PD. The proposed method can reflect all the cross-coupled effects of multiple design variables, and can be utilized to the design of general acoustic transducers.
This paper provides a simple numerical method to determine the optimal parameters of tuned mass damper (TMD) and viscoelastic dampers (VEDs) in frame structure for wind vibration control considering the soil-structure interation (SSI) effect in frequency domain. Firstly, the numerical model of frame structure equipped with TMD and VEDs considering SSI effect is established in frequency domain. Then, the genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to obtain the optimal parameters of VEDs and TMD. The optimization process is demonstrated by a 20-storey frame structure supported by pile group for different soil conditions. Two wind resistant systems are considered in the analysis, the Structure-TMD system and the Structure-TMD-VEDs system. The example proves that this method can quickly determine the optimal parameters of energy dissipation devices compared with the traditional finite element method, thus is practically valuable.
