  • Compared to the bar code which is being widely used for commercial products management, color code is advantageous in both the outlook and the number of combinations. And the color code has application areas complement to the RFID's. However, due to the severe distortion of the color component values, which is easily over $50{\%}$ of the scale, color codes have difficulty in finding applications in the industry. To improve the accuracy of recognition of color codes, it'd better to statistically process an entire color region and then determine its color than to process some samples selected from the region. For this purpose, we suggest a technique to detect edges between color regions in this paper, which is indispensable for an accurate segmentation of color regions. We first transformed RGB color image to HSI and YIQ color models, and then extracted I- and Y-components from them, respectively. Then we performed Canny edge detection on each component image. Each edge image usually had some edges missing. However, since the resulting edge images were complementary, we could obtain an optimal edge image by combining them.

  • Recently, for secure software development, static analysis tools have been used mostly to analyze the source code of the software and identify software weaknesses caused of vulnerabilities. In order to select the optimal static analysis tool, both weaknesses rules and analysis capabilities of the tool are important factors. Therefore, in this paper we propose the test codes developed for evaluating the rules and analysis capabilities of the tools. The test codes to involve 43 weaknesses such as SQL injection etc. can be used to evaluate the adequacy of the rules and analysis capabilities of the tools.

  • CDMA/TOD with asymmetric capacity allocation between uplink and downlink is a highly attractive solution to support the next generation mobile systems. This is because flexible asymmetric allocation of capacity to uplink and downlink usually improves the utilization of the limited bandwidth. In this paper, we mathematically formulate an optimal timeslot and code allocation problem, which is to maximize the total utility considering the numbers of codes(channels) allocated to each data class and the forced terminations of previously allocated codes. We also suggest a real-time integrated timeslot and code allocation scheme using Lagrangean relaxation and subgradient optimization techniques. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides high-quality solutions in a fast time.

  • This work presents a simplified efficient blind detection algorithm for orthogonal space-time codes(OSTBC). First, the proposed decoder exploits a proper decomposition approach of the upper triangular matrix R, which resulted from Cholesky-factorization of the composition channel matrix, to form an easy-to-solve blind detection equation. Secondly, in order to avoid suffering from the high computational load, the proposed decoder applies a sub-optimal QR-based decoder. Computer simulation results verify that the proposed decoder allows to significantly reduce computational complexity while still satisfying the bit-error-rate(BER) performance.

  • In this paper, a cooperative relaying protocol called soft-decision-and-forward (SDF) with multiple antennas in each node is introduced. SDF protocol exploits the soft decision source symbol values from the received signal at the relay node. For orthogonal transmission (OT), orthogonal codes including Alamouti code are used and for non-orthogonal transmission (NT), distributed space-time codes are designed by using a quasi-orthogonal space-time block code. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) decoders for the proposed protocol with low decoding complexity are proposed. For OT, the ML decoders are derived as symbolwise decoders while for NT, the ML decoders are derived as pairwise decoders. It can be seen through simulations that SDF protocol outperforms AF protocol for both OT and NT.

  • The number of quantization bits of the input signals $X_k$,$Y_k$ need to be optimally determined through the trade-off between the H/W complexity and the BER performance in Turbo codes applications. Also, an effective means to incorporate a channel reliability $L_c$ in the Log-MAP-based Turbo decoding is highly required. because it has a major effect on both the complexity and the performance. In this paper, a novel bit-shifting approach that substitutes for the multiplying is proposed so as to effectively incorporate. $L_c$ in Turbo decoding. The optimal number of quantization bits of $X_k$,$Y_k$ is investigated through Monte-Carlo simulations assuming that bit-shifting approach is adopted. In addition. The effects of an incorrect estimation of noise variance on the performance of Turbo codes is investigated. There is a confined range in which the effects of an incorrect estimation can be ignored.

  • Storage system often applies erasure codes to protect against disk failure and ensure system reliability and availability. Liberation code that is a type of coding scheme has been widely used in many storage systems because its encoding and modifying operations are efficient. However, it cannot effectively achieve fast recovery from single disk failure in storage systems, and has great influence on recovery performance as well as response time of client requests. To solve this problem, in this paper, we present HRSF, a Hybrid Recovery method for solving Single disk Failure. We present the optimal algorithm to accelerate failure recovery process. Theoretical analysis proves that our scheme consumes approximately 25% less amount of data read than the conventional method. In the evaluation, we perform extensive experiments by setting different number of disks and chunk sizes. The results show that HRSF outperforms conventional method in terms of the amount of data read and failure recovery time.

  • In reinforced concrete constructions, reinforcing bar generates more CO2 per unit weight than other construction materials. In particular, cutting and bending rebar is the main source of rebar waste in the construction industry. Rebar-cutting waste is inevitable during the construction of a reinforced concrete structure since the rebar is not manufactured as designed. Large amounts of waste can be avoided by utilizing optimal cutting patterns and schedules. This research provides a fundamental analysis of the automatic calculation of column rebar length using BIM-based shape codes to minimize cutting waste to near zero. By employing this approach in practice, it is possible to minimize the rate of rebar-cutting waste, reduce costs, shorten construction duration, and reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the development of this research will serve as a clue for the development of BIM-based rebar layout automation algorithms.

  • This paper explores the alternating conditional expectation (ACE) algorithm-based surrogate model to advance the state-of-practice in uncertainty and sensitivity analysis methodologies for severe accident codes. For engineering purposes, the ACE algorithm has been used as an alternative means to find the optimal functional forms of the multiple input variables and response variables of interest. Analysis results here demonstrate that compared with the reference cases the proposed surrogate model provides much higher performance in terms of the coefficient of determination (R2) and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE), thus giving more robust insights into the relationship and correlation between the input parameters and figures of merit (FOMs) of interest. Relevant results and insights are summarized in terms of points of interest.

  • The objective of optimization is to present a design process that minimizes the total material consumption while satisfying current codes and specifications. In the research an optimization formulation for RC shear wall structures is proposed. And based on conceptual design methodology, an optimization process is investigated. Then optimal design techniques and specific explanations are introduced for residential buildings with shear wall structure, especially for that with a rectangular layout. An example of 30-story building is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimal design process. Furthermore, the influence of aspect ratio on the concrete consumption and the steel consumption of the superstructure are analyzed for this typical RC shear wall structure; and their relations are obtained by regressive analysis. Finally, the optimal material consumption is suggested for the residential building with RC shear wall structure and with rectangular layout. The relation and the data suggested can be used for guiding the design of similar RC shear wall structures.
