  • This paper presents a study of laser output characteristics. We fabricated a MOPA (master oscillator power amplifier)-type high-power, narrowbandwidth fiber laser with a bidirectional pumping configuration in its main amplifier. As signal beams, light sources with bandwidths of 3 GHz and 10 GHz-phase-modulated through a PRBS (pseudo-random binary sequence)-were used interchangeably. Furthermore, the characteristics of the SBS (stimulated Brillouin scattering) were analyzed using a signal beam with 3 GHz bandwidth, by adjusting the forward to backward pumppower ratio. Moreover, the characteristics of the transverse mode instability were analyzed by adjusting the forward to backward pump-power ratio, using a signal beam with 10-GHz bandwidth. Finally, the output power from 10 GHz bandwidth was amplified to more than 1 kW using a forward to backward pump-power ratio of 1.6. The beam quality M2 was measured to be approximately 1.36, and the optical-to-optical efficiency was 80% at maximum output power.

  • A $Nd:YVO_4$ laser dual-end-pumped by a wavelength-locked 878.6 nm laser diode is presented. At the repetition rate of 500 KHz, the absorbed pump power of 58 W, an output power of 26.1 W at 1064 nm is obtained, corresponding to an optical-optical efficiency of 45%. The pulse width is 44.2 ns. Meanwhile, the effects of traditional 808 nm pumping and 878.6 nm dual-end-pumping on the output laser beam quality and pulse width are compared and analyzed in an experiment.

  • Quenched dye laser (QDL), which operates with relaxation oscillation mode, is one of the most powerful source for ultra-short pulse light. In this paper, the output characteristics of QDL is theoretically analyzed by a computer simulation. The QDL is assumed that the laser dye is Rhodamine 6G which has the oscillation wavelength of 590 nrn and that the active length is 5 mm and that the pumping source is XeCllaser which has oscillation wavelength of 308 nm. It is revealed ilim the pulse width of short cavity dye laser reduced less than 1/100 than pumping pulse duration and has the linear relationship with spatial width of pumping beam approximately. In addition, it is revealed that the short cavity dye laser is a powerful candidate of pulse width variable light source, which is adjusted by spatial size of pumping beam_ beam_

  • To realize uniform side pumping of solar lasers and improve their output power, a solar concentrating system based on off-axis parabolic mirrors is proposed. Four identical off-axis parabolic mirrors with focal length of 1,000 mm are toroidally arranged as the primary concentrator. Four two-dimensional compound parabolic concentrators (2D-CPCs) are designed as a secondary concentrator to further compress the focused spot induced by the parabolic mirrors, and the focused light is then homogenized by four rectangular diffusers and provides uniform pumping for a laser-crystal rod to achieve solar laser emission. Simulation results show that the solar power received by the laser rod, uniformity of the light spot, and output power of the solar laser are 7,872.7 W, 98%, and 351.8 W respectively. This uniform pumping configuration and concentrator design thus provide a new means for developing high-power side-pumped solid-state solar lasers.

  • The output power and the energy of Rh-6G dye laser were enhanced by the mixture of Rh-560 dye whose fluorescence spectrum was coincident with the absorption spectrum of Rh-6G. The argon filled coaxial flashlamp used for pulsed pumping and argon laser for CW pumping. The concentration of Rh-6G dye was optimized in each pumping method before Rh-560 dye was mixed in Rh-6G dye solution. In the coaxial flash lamp pumped Rh-6G laser the output energy was increased about 30% when Rh-560 was mixed at 1% of Rh-6G concentration. In the case of argon laser pumping with multiline, the output power was increased 18% at the concentration of 2.5%. In the single line laser pumping, the output power was enhanced more efficiently. The power enhancements were 72% and 88% when the pumping wavelengths were 488 nm and 514.5 nm respectively. ively.

  • A novel broadband wavelength-swept Raman laser was used to implement Fourier-domain mode locked (FDML) swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Instead of a conventional semiconductor optical amplifier, this study used broadband optical fiber Raman amplification, over 50 nm centered around 1545 nm, using a multi-wavelength optical pumping scheme, which was implemented with the four laser diodes at the center wavelengths of 1425, 1435, 1455 and 1465 nm, respectively, and the maximum operating power of 150 mW each. The operating swept frequency of the laser was determined to 16.7 kHz from the FDML condition of 12 km optical fiber in the ring cavity. The OCT images were obtained using the novel broadband wavelengthswept Raman laser source.

  • The photoisomerization of the crosslinked and uncrosslinked polymer-pair with azo linkages was studied by the photoinduced birefringence. The amount of photoinduced birefringence of crosslinked polymer system was much smaller than that of uncrosslinked polymer system, even when varying pumping laser power, so the photoisomerization of an azo chromophores could be controlled by crosslinking process. • -Part I- As market needs become more various, the production of smaller quantities of a wider variety of products becomes increasingly important. In addition, in order to meet demands for more efficient production, long-term unmanned factory operation is prevailing at a remarkable pace. Within this context, laser machines are gaining increasing popularity for use in applications such as cutting and welding metallic and ceramic materials. FANUC supplies four models of $CO_2$ laser oscillators with laser power ranging from 1.5㎾ to 6㎾ on an OEM basis to machine tool builders. However, FANUC has been requested to produce laser oscillators that allow more compact and lower-cost laser machines to be built. To meet such demands, FANUC has developed six models of Slab type YAG laser oscillators with output power ranging from 150W to 2㎾. These oscillators are designed mainly fur cutting and welding sheet metals. The oscillator has an exceptionally superior laser beam quality compared to conventional YAG laser oscillators, thus providing significantly improved machining capability. In addition, the laser beam of the oscillator can be efficiently transmitted through quartz optical fibers, enabling laser machines to be simplified and made more compact. This paper introduces the features of FANUC’s developed Slab type YAG laser oscillators and their applications. - Part II - All-solid-state lasers employing laser diodes (LD) as a source of pumping solid-state laser feature high efficiency, compactness, and high reliability. Thus, they are expected to provide a new generation of processing tools in various fields, especially in automobile and aircraft industries where great hopes are being placed on laser welding technology for steel plates and aluminum materials for which a significant growth in demand is expected. Also, in power plants, it is hoped that reliability and safety will be improved by using the laser welding technology. As in the above, the advent of high-power all-solid-state lasers may not only bring a great technological innovation to existing industry, but also create new industry. This is the background for this project, which has set its sights on the development of high-power, all-solid-state lasers with an average output of over 10㎾, an oscillation efficiency of over 20%, and a laser head volume of below 0.05㎥. FANUC Ltd. is responsible for the research and development of slab type lasers, and TOSHIBA Corp. far rod type lasers. By pumping slab type Nd: YAG crystal and by using quasi-continuous wave (QCW) type LD stacks, FANUC has already obtained an average output power of 1.7㎾, an optical conversion efficiency of 42%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 16%. These conversion efficiencies are the best results the world has ever seen in the field of high-power all-solid-state lasers. TOSHIBA Corp. has also obtained an output power of 1.2㎾, an optical conversion efficiency of 30%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 12%, by pumping the rod type Nd: YAG crystal by continuous wave (CW) type LD stacks. The laser power achieved by TOSHIBA Corp. is also a new world record in the field of rod type all-solid-state lasers. This report provides details of the above results and some information on future development plans.
